Walt Disney’s visit to the 1958 Berlinale hardly went unnoticed. The very fact that the co-founder of the Walt Disney Co. was flying to Germany made the front page of The Hollywood Reporter.
As the Cold War was heating up, the staunchly conservative Disney, then 56, made the rounds in Berlin, appearing at the Brandenburg Gate and visiting new mayor Willy Brandt, who welcomed him, saying, “Our children remind us of your characters every day.”
The still young film festival, then in its eighth year, had invited Disney because his studio’s live-action Perri was screening in its documentary lineup. Part of the True Life Adventures nature series, the film follows a female squirrel over the course of a year as she seeks a mate.
Although the series has been criticized for anthropomorphizing its animals, it was popular at the time, winning eight Academy Awards over 12 years. The 75-minute Perri was...

As Disney Animation moves toward its 100th anniversary, the studio is collaborating with the producers of Immersive Van Gogh to create Disney Animation Immersive Experience, set to open this December in Toronto.
“A combination of an art exhibit and movie theater” is how Oscar-winning producer J. Miles Dale (The Shape of Water), who is leading the creative team, describes the walk-thru experience. He says it will incorporate “three-quarters” of the century of Disney titles from early work like Snow White to The Little Mermaid, Frozen and Encanto — along with their classic music — while taking advantage of projection mapping to create a 360-degree experience.
Working with Toronto-based Lighthouse Immersive, Disney Animation plans to open the experience at Lighthouse ArtSpace Toronto and then visit additional cities including Cleveland, Nashville, Detroit, Denver, Boston, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Columbus in early 2023. Anaheim’s Disneyland is in the plans.

Do you want to build a better Disney trope?
Eleven years before “Frozen” took over as the Disney movie of the decade, 2002’s “Lilo & Stitch” similarly focused on the bond between two sisters amid tragedy — and now, co-writer/director Chris Sanders is feeling a little iced out.
“To be clear, I think ‘Frozen”s great,” Sanders told The New York Times as part of a 20th-anniversary celebration of “Lilo.” “But it was a little bit frustrating for me because people were like, ‘Finally, a nonromantic relationship with these two girls,’ and I thought, ‘We did that! That has absolutely been done before.'”

Produced by the team behind “Chef’s Table” and Walt Disney Animation Studios (via executive producer Amy Astley), the series provides an intimate look at six Disney artists and their distinctive talents and passions as they draw favorite iconic characters. Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

Women at the 94th Academy Awards won 10 of the 43 individual Oscar statuettes handed out on Sunday night, the worst showing for female winners since the 2018 Academy Awards.
That’s 23% of the overall individual winners across the Oscars’ 23 competitive categories, bolstered by wins for Best Director Jane Campion, as well as others for Sian Heder for Best Adapted Screenplay and Billie Eilish for Best Original Song. This tally, however, does not include the International Feature category, which is awarded to the film’s country of origin — in this case, Japan for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car.”
That total was a drop from last year when we saw Chloé Zhao win Best Director for “Nomadland,” just the second woman to ever do so, as well as Emerald Fennell picking up Best Original Screenplay for “Promising Young Woman.” Their wins in 2021 helped women secure 17 wins out of 47 individual winners from the 23 competitive categories,...

With a trunk of tunes from 3x Tony winner Lin Manuel Miranda, and a double platinum hit song in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” Encanto is clearly Broadway bound, right?
Clark Spencer, President of Disney Animation Studio, and one of the Oscar winning producers on Encanto tonight said it’s “still early” but “it feels like a natural for someday.”

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

A weekend trio of big wins for Netflix at the DGA, BAFTA and Critics Choice awards has given Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” the gas required to make it over the finish line. That’s if it can keep its closest competitors — “Belfast” from Kenneth Branagh and “Coda” from Siân Heder — at bay.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is the top prize from the PGA Awards, has been one of the most vital and telling precursors from all major guilds. Updated with winners list: Netflix’s The Power of the Dog was named the Best Film on Sunday at the Ee British Academy Film Awards. The victory in BAFTA’s marquee category, along with a win by Jane Campion as Best Director, helped cement the Western as a front-runner in the race for the Oscar.
The in-person ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London and hosted by Rebel Wilson saw Warner Bros’ Dune dominated in the crafts categories, finishing with a leading five trophies: for Production Design, Special Visual Effects, Cinematography, Sound and Original Score. No other film had more that two wins.
Dune, thought, lost out to Dog in the Best Film race that also included Focus Features’ Belfast, which won the Outstanding British Film award tonight; Licorice Pizza, which took the Original Screenplay prize for Paul Thomas Anderson; and Netflix’s satire Don’t Look Up.

The best picture Oscar race is in a dead heat, with any number of paths to victory. But there’s another fierce competition, years in the making, to be the first streaming giant to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted honor.
On the television side, Netflix and Amazon each made a play to become the first streamer to win the Emmy Award for either of the top series categories, but Hulu shattered the glass ceiling with “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017. On the film side, could Apple Original Films be the surprise streaming giant to take home the Oscar statuette for best picture with the delightful family drama “Coda”?

Lin-Manuel Miranda is ecstatic about the success of the animated feature “Encanto,” and for his second Oscar nomination for original song — this time, for the emotional number “Dos Oruguitas.” However, the performance of the movie’s soundtrack on the music charts has been getting all the headlines, specifically the hit song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Miranda doesn’t regret submitting “Dos Oruguitas” rather than “Bruno” for consideration for this year’s Academy Awards. The decision had to be done by Nov. 1, which the film had yet opened in theaters despite its performance on the charts.
“I’m still proud of ‘Dos Oruguitas’ as the submission,” Miranda says. “When those are the parameters, you have to pick the thing that best exemplifies the spirit of the movie, and it contains all of it inside this song – as opposed to a journey of a particular character. It’s the foundational story,...

The Producers Guild of America announced its nominations for the motion picture and television categories for the upcoming 33rd PGA Awards, and it was a good day for the streamers (once again).
Netflix ruled the film side with three films landing in the field of 10 nominees: “Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Warner Bros. captured two nods from its slate: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.
At the best possible moment with Oscar voting opening today, Amazon Studios’ “Being the Ricardos” from Aaron Sorkin snagged one of the coveted spots, which helps its best picture chances considerably.
Some of the omissions were pronounced, most notably Apple Original Films’ “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen missing out on a nod, even though the heartwarming “Coda” made it into the lineup.

The busiest single day of film nominations in many years kicked off on Thursday with the Producers Guild of America announcing its nominees for the best-produced films of 2021, a slate of films that ranged from indies like “Belfast” and “Coda” to the bigger budget extravaganzas “Dune” and “West Side Story.”
Also on the list: “Being the Ricardos,” “Don’t Look Up,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
Conspicuously missing from the PGA’s list were the Covid-wracked year’s biggest blockbuster, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” as well as “Nightmare Alley,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “House of Gucci.”

A tsunami of buzz and Oscar-telling indicators drop on Thursday, with the major guilds announcing award nominations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and American Cinema Editors (Ace Eddies) all serve as critical barometers for the Academy Awards, especially in the race for best picture.
DGA has averaged four of their five nominees landing in the Oscars’ best director category, including last year with Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) getting bumped for Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”). The first-time directors’ category, with the exception of Jordan Peele for “Get Out” (2017), has gone on to get a nod at the Academy.
The PGA always provides some big blockbusters and Academy flare, which bodes well for either “No Time to Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The WGA has a lot of ineligibilities that won’t provide a strong enough indicator for the screenplay categories.

‘Encanto’: Read The Screenplay For Disney’s Animated Musical Featuring Some Lin-Manuel Miranda Magic
Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Lin-Manuel Miranda had three movies open in 2021, but only Encanto has brand new music by the Hamilton creator. In the Heights was based on his stage musical, while Tick Tick… Boom! featured Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical songs.
Encanto tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), an outcast in a Colombian family where everyone has a unique gift, except for Mirabel. Mirabel’s sister, Luisa (Jessica Darrow), has super strength, and her other sister, Isabel (Dianne Guerrero), can bring vegetation to life. Her cousin, Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), can talk to animals. Yet, when the magic starts to dwindle, Mirabel still steps up to save the magic, of which she was not a beneficiary.
Producer Clark Spencer said the inspiration for Encanto was her grandparents.

Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” the studio’s first Southeast Asian action-adventure, led Asifa-Hollywood’s 49th Annie Awards with 10 nominations, including best animated feature. Disney Animation is set to release their first animated short in five years with the Zach Parrish-directed Us Again, which will debut in theaters alongside Raya and the Last Dragon on March 5. The short is set to drop on Disney+ in June.
True to the form of Disney’s past shorts, Parrish’s Us Again brings together dance, music, emotional storytelling and inspired animation. The film is Disney Animation’s first new theatrical short since the 2016 release of Inner Workings which accompanied the theatrical release of Moana.
Parrish is an 11-year veteran of Disney Animation who served as head of animation on Big Hero 6 and directed the Short Circuit film Puddles. Award-winning choreographers/dancers Keone and Mari (known for World of Dance and their work with Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish), and acclaimed composer Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel) brought their talents to this experimental and musical fantasy. It turned out the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar had a long history of misogynistic and toxic behavior toward his (mostly female) employees and by the following year, the company ousted him from his role under the guise of a resignation. His alleged behavior included a pattern of “grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes,” and the Oscar-winning toon titan reportedly had minders assigned expressly to rein him in.

Millstein, who’s been with Disney for more than two decades, replaces former Blue Sky co-president Andrea Miloro, who last month departed the studio.
