Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.
Dixon loved the banter interplay of presenter duos Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito and Emily Blunt/Ryan Gosling. Montgomery found it a “pretty solid” show that peaked for him in Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning international film for “The Zone of Interest.” Davidson applauded director Mstyslav Chernov’s powerful speech after winning in Best Documentary Feature for “20 Days in Mariupol.

With an “Oppenheimer” steamroller forecast on nearly everyone’s radar, there was plenty of consensus among the guys, including the fact “Oppenheimer” is a lock for Best Picture and its director Christopher Nolan for Best Director. Also, they’re unanimous in picking Robert Downey Jr. in supporting actor for (ho-hum) “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) in supporting actress, both of whom have treated awards season as their personal plaything while sweeping up everything in sight. “It’s kind of Christopher Nolan’s fault that he made awards season so boring,...

It’s been presumed for months now that the lead actress race in film categories at the various ceremonies was destined to be a two-way race between Emma Stone for “Poor Things” and Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Lately, it’s been more of a one-way race, with Stone topping BAFTA, the Golden Globes and Choice Choice honors. But in a Screen Actors Guild Film Awards predictions slugfest this week in advance of Saturday’s ceremony, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were asked to consider a third contender: Margot Robbie for “Barbie.” This is because they were joined by encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire and regular Gold Derby contributor Tariq Khan, who made a convincing case that Robbie was poised for a massive upset based on his personal survey of some 500 SAG Awards voters.

The season three trailer for Girls5eva declares “it’s neva 2 L8 4 a comeback.” It’s also never too late for a canceled series to be revived, as season three marks the first under Netflix after being canceled two seasons in by Peacock.

Looked at one way, the 75th Emmy Awards on Monday night yielded the most predictable (read: boring) of ceremonies. Everything went according to form. “Succession” was expected to dominated the drama series categories. “The Bear” was supposed to preside over comedy series. “Beef” was thought to be a shoo-in among the limited series lineups. And that’s exactly what happened. However, looked at another way, Gold Derby voters accurately forecast the winners in 26 of the 27 categories, which is quite the feat. Still, meeting for a slugfest the morning after the Emmys, senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Denton Davidson and news and features editor Ray Richmond were officially underwhelmed, hoping for an upset or two but finding just one category that didn’t go according to form: Best Variety/Talk Series, where the outgoing “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” defied the Gold Derby odds. Still recovering from watching and/or covering the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Denton Davidson and Daniel Montgomery, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan sat down Monday morning (Pacific Time) to sort out what they had just seen hours before. Davidson was interviewing those arriving on the red carpet (assessment: freezing), while Richmond hung out in the general press room recording Q&As with winners backstage (assessment: uninspired) and Dixon, Montgomery and Khan watched it all unfold on TV as the awards gods intended. Their overall evaluation was that the comedy from presenters was hit-and-miss and first-time host Jo Koy fell flat, but that in general the results – mostly predictable though they may have been – supply a valuable gauge for the SAG, Critics Choice and Oscar races coming up. In fact, Khan believes there is literally a zero percent chance that it will lose. “The Globes rarely go against it when there is such a clear Oscar frontrunner,” he says. “It’s a worldwide sensation and one of the biggest movies of the year.” Watch their compelling discussion in full above.

In the wake of a Donald Trump presidency in 2016, in addition to the rise of anti-Gay legislation which posed a threat to the marriage equality decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, filmmaker Melinda Maerker and producer David Clayton Miller took the time to check in on the Lgbtqia+ community in the Midwest.
Here was a place of American family values, rattled by rising discrimination; yet several Lgbtqia+ spouses and families opted to stay strong in their communities and live true to themselves. The new Hulu movie, We Live Here is a window into their struggle in schools, churches, and their neighborhoods.

The unmistakable 30 Rock theme song is getting new life for charity.
Creator and star Tina Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond, a key member of the creative team who composed the music and directed multiple episodes, are teaming with nonprofit art studio Soundwaves Art Foundation as a fundraiser for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. The duo autographed a limited edition set of canvases created from the actual sound waves of Richmond’s theme song.
Artist and Soundwaves founder Tim Wakefield created the pieces by running the song through a multimedia art process using layered snippets from the resulting sound wave images. He then collaborated with Fey and Richmond to color and distort the design into the final images.
The artwork is made by artist Tim Wakefield, founder of Soundwaves Art Foundation
The couple put their autographs on a limited edition of 100 prints and four one-of-a-kind original artworks from their home in Manhattan.

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.

Funnywoman Tina Fey seemingly has it all: an amazing career as a writer, actor, and producer; an over-two-decades-long marriage; and two kids. The "30 Rock" star and creator met her now-husband, Jeff Richmond - a composer, actor, director, and producer who composed the music for and directed multiple episodes of her NBC series - while working at The Second City, the famous improvisational comedy troupe. They married in 2001 and have two daughters.

“It’s like asking a woman when she’s crowning, ‘Do you want to give birth, again?’ ” explains Patricia Arquette of being asked about future directing ambitions while still waiting to screen her debut. “You’re like, ‘Not now!’ ”
Arquette’s feature, Gonzo Girl, is an adaptation of the book by Cheryl Della Pietra, who drew on her time as Hunter S. Thompson’s assistant in the 1990s for a fictionalized story about an aspiring writer who is tasked with extracting the latest novel from a drug-addled iconoclast. The script first came to the Oscar-winning actress, who had begun talking to her agents about nascent directorial aspirations, as an offer to star. In reading it, she saw the chance to explore themes, according to Arquette, that included — but were not limited to — “celebrity distortion, co-dependence, addiction, unhealed wounds, art, joy, life, sexuality.”

CNN’s anchors pressed prominent Democrats about President Joe Biden’s perceived weaknesses going into the 2024 reelection campaign, following the release of a new CNN poll showing that a significant majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters want someone other than Biden to be their presidential candidate next year.
CNN host Erin Burnett asked Rep. Katie Porter, a Democrat who’s also running for a California Senate seat, about the poll’s grim numbers.
“Does the Democratic Party need to start seriously looking at someone else?” Burnett said.
Porter didn’t directly respond right away, saying, “President Biden has done a terrific job on the economy, and I think this is a matter of just people wanting to sort of dream up what they could imagine for different kinds of candidates, at this point.”

The Season 3 (and presumed series) finale of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso brought closure for most of the characters, including Phil Dunster’s reformed bad boy Jamie Tartt. After one more squabble with foe-turned-friend and mentor Roy Kent over who can date Keeley — a dilemma she easily solved by throwing both of them out of her house — Jamie and Roy are seen in the final seconds having a beer together, sitting alongside Keeley and their AFC Richmond teammates. In the flashforward, Jamie also has a friendly conversation with his father, a sign of a possible reconciliation.
Earlier in the finale, Jaime clinched the win for the team in their final match of the season with a “decoy” trick play Nate came up with back in Season 1.

[This story contains spoilers from “So Long, Farewell,” the third season — and possible series — finale of Ted Lasso.]
All season long, the people who make Ted Lasso have been somewhat coy about whether the end of their planned three-season arc would mark the end of the series. Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence and others have said multiple times that this season would mark the end of what they set out to do, while never quite stating that it would definitively close out the series.
The last installment of season three, “So Long, Farewell,” played no such games. The episode felt every bit like a series finale, with callbacks to the past and flash-forwards to the futures of several key characters (imagined or not; more on that in a few paragraphs). The fact that Ted Lasso is Apple TV+’s biggest series by far to date might mean that the streamer and Warner Bros. Every great sports story needs a rival.
From iconic films like “Rocky” or even “Dodgeball” to the real-life drama of trades, drafts, and geographic enmity, the opponent is essential to the underdog athlete odyssey. “Ted Lasso”s AFC Richmond is as underdog as it gets as an English football team with a sweet but minimally-experienced American coach — but that was poised to shift in Season 3. After two seasons of “rom-communism” and soft men, Richmond’s own “wonder kid” Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed) quit in a fit of rage and went to work for West Ham — a juggernaut team run by Richmond owner Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) evil ex Rupert (Anthony Head).
Yet even with the sky-high stakes of league drama and personal history, “Ted Lasso” missed the mark in cultivating a genuinely compelling rivalry. Season 3 flounders for multiple reasons — IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote that Season 3 put the cast “into...

[This story contains spoilers for “The Strings That Bind Us,” episode seven of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
Ted Lasso is a comedy, obviously, and occasionally a tearjerker, but it’s also something of a fantasy — a world where not only an American football coach initially hired as a revenge play can stick on for three seasons at the top levels of English football, but also one whose characters are almost always trying to become better people.
That’s part of what makes the show so appealing, and also what makes for such a jolt in the times when the real world shoulders its way into the story. “The Strings That Bind Us” had a big dose of that, but the episode (which clocked in at nearly an hour after last week’s 62-minute outing) still left room to bring home its core belief that people working together is the best way forward, on or off a field of play.

Here's something we've learned about Nathan Shelley: He simply cannot be someone he isn't, not no way, not no how. Something always stops the first proper villain in "Ted Lasso" short from quite getting to be the idealized version of himself that he seemingly always strives to be — but he hasn't yet realized that that isn't a bad thing, because the person he wants to be isn't exactly the best kind of person. And the person he actually is just so, so innately good.
Nate, played by Nick Mohammed, has been trying to lean full-force into his angry impulses, impulses that he misidentifies as his only strength, and we've watched that take the lead over the course of two seasons. Moving to West Ham to work under Rupert's tutelage was the final attempt, knowing he would be surrounded by the kind of energy that would allow him to fully harness his perceived strengths.

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
Hunt’s answer: “I mean, you’ve seen the show before. You know how it goes.”
In “Signs,” the show’s fifth episode of season three, it went. Or rather, he went: After firing up the team before a match with powerhouse Manchester City — by basically repeating the same idea Jamie (Phil Dunster) offered up moments before — Zava no-shows for the match. (“Maybe he’s dead,” Ted muses on the sideline. “He fucking better be,” Roy growls.) During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
“He fucking better be,” Roy growls.) He later explains to his social media followers — ahem, “believers” — that he’s retiring to focus solely on his family and his avocado farm.

[This story contains spoilers for “Big Week,” episode four of Ted Lasso season three.]
The “Big Week” of the title in this episode of Ted Lasso is AFC Richmond’s first meeting with West Ham, now led by former Greyhounds assistant Nate (Nick Mohammed). It’s a grudge match that gets extra grudge-y, even as Nate is still stewing in some very complicated feelings toward his former boss, Ted (Jason Sudeikis).
Nate’s heel turn at the end of season two shocked a lot of Ted Lasso viewers, to the point that even Mohammed was a bit surprised by the reaction. “People were angry. They took it really personally,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I can only think it’s because season one Nate, that arc was [he was the] underdog hired by Ted, does good and gets promoted. It’s something we can all cling on to because we love those stories. They’re sort of sports movie tropes. Because we were rooting for Nate, it...

Our first introduction to season 3 of "Ted Lasso" was, above all else, very telling. In the series' main trailer for the current season, the on-screen events are underscored by a classic and well-loved Rolling Stones track titled "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Even simply in the title, one can tell that the choice is there to tell us something — but in case you needed a little extra convincing, the lyrics of the chorus hammer it home:
"You can't always get what you want / But if you try sometimes, well, you might find / You get what you need."
In season 3, our main cast of characters is coming to terms with this very real phenomenon that happens in both on and off-screen contexts. You can't always get what you want, but most of the time, you find you actually get what you need in a situation where you initially felt you were losing out.

Ted Lasso was a a successful American football coach who unusually is hired by the AFC Richmond Greyhounds soccer team in London, and turns them around with his corn-pone Americanisms. He is aided by his right hand man nicknamed Beard and ex-star-player Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). The first episode of Season Three all the cliff hangers from Season Two are addressed, especially the abdication of assistant coach Nate (Nick Mohammed) to rival team West Ham, which is owned by Rupert (Anthony Head), the ex-husband of Richmond owner Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham). And lest we forget Keeley (the...

This article contains spoilers for "Ted Lasso" season 3.
Say what you will about season 2 of "Ted Lasso," but it was nice to have the whole cast and crew together in one place. For the most part, the characters were all a part of AFC Richmond; even if they didn't get along all the time, they still had to be in the same general area together. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) was forced to regularly interact with new team therapist Sharon (Sarah Niles), which led to him slowly but surely overcoming his prejudice against therapists and learning to open up to her. Jamie (Phil Dunster) was forced into the same locker room as the team he'd gotten regulated in the previous season's finale, leading to him learning to let go of his ego and become a real team player.

There's a reason that Nathan Shelley (Nick Mohammed) is the very first person that jolly football coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) meets when he arrives at Nelson Road in season 1 of the Apple TV+ series. At the time, Nate was the perfect encapsulation of the so-called Lasso Effect. A timid kit man who expects to cower before the newest AFC Richmond coach, Nate is caught off guard when Ted embraces him: bolstering his confidence, indirectly calling off his bullies, and praising all of his great ideas.
In a matter of episodes, Ted changes Nate's life by making him an assistant coach. But more important is the way he's made Nate feel: valued and vital to the team. Like so many of the players — and basically, everyone else who spends time with the folksy charmer — Nate is forever changed by the profound Lasso Effect. Just not quite in the way we hoped.
