Buy low, sell high. Mark Cuban just proved himself a master of that tried-and-true investment mantra.
The Shark Tank mainstay is not only swimming away from that show after 14 successful seasons, he has now received approval from the NBA Board of Governors to sell the majority stake in his beloved Dallas Mavericks.
Cuban bought the Mavericks for $285 million in 2000 is now selling the team for about $3.5 billion. That’s a cool $3-plus billion over the purchase price and Cuban will reportedly retain 27% of the team and may well retain control of basketball operations. A pretty sweet deal.
Per Yahoo Sports:
Cuban is selling at a time franchise values are rising (in part based on a new national television broadcast deal starting in 2025 [that is] expected to double that national revenue) and likely expansion will bring a flood of cash to teams’ bottom lines (through expansion fees). Four years ago, 15-year-old Victor Wembanyama celebrated his appearance in the Fiba Europe U16 European Championship tournament by opening an official Instagram account, one that he or his people (or both) maintain to this day. The first post was a small collage of him and his teammates playing for Team France. A push-shot Wemby, as he is colloquially known; a shot block; a pic of him and his fellow Frenchmen cheesing for the camera and getting a group flex in. The first comment, posted all those years ago, from ‘Stratton_05,” is a goat emoji.

Having a premiere at SXSW last year turned out to be a charm for directing duo The Daniels, and although awards lightning most likely won’t strike this year for this somewhat niche horror pastiche, hopefully its creators — Australian double-act the Cairnes brothers — will get their own media moment as a result. That Late Night With the Devil is one for the myriad genre festivals that abound internationally is a no-brainer, but the Cairneses deserve a bit more consideration than that for their film’s wry engagement with U.S. history and pop culture, despite shooting their New York-set film entirely in Melbourne.

This post contains major spoilers for "Babylon" and "Boogie Nights."
Damien Chazelle's newest film, "Babylon," might be one of his biggest swings to date. After his trip to the Moon in "First Man," Chazelle is back in his element, once again telling a story of ambitious dreamers making their way through a beautiful depiction of Hollywood. However, Chazelle crucially takes a big step away from his cleaner image, characterizing 1920s Hollywood through cocaine, chaos, bodily fluids and scandal. The opening scenes of "Babylon" make it definitively clear to the audience that we're not in "La La Land" anymore.
Despite finding himself in edgier, darker territory, Chazelle's reverence for the medium of film and the artists that came before him are as clear as day. Like Chazelle's other films, "Babylon" is a hodgepodge of different influences and inspirations, from a perversion of "Singin' in the Rain," to the ironic amounts...

At this point, Mark Wahlberg‘s Hollywood persona has as much variety as Dwayne Johnson‘s. Wahlberg effectively plays himself in every movie, whether it’s a thriller, an action comedy, or a drama of some kind. Is it boring? More than a little; the days of Wahlberg taking on more challenging roles like Dirk Diggler or Sgt. Dignam looks to be over.

Traditionally, director Paul Thomas Anderson’s movies have been plotted around ensemble casts that provide ample opportunity for its actors to shine. When Mark Wahlberg joined the cast of Anderson’s Boogie Nights, that’s exactly what he thought he’d signed up for. But when the film was released — 25 years ago- Wahlberg’s character, porn star Dirk Diggler, was all that anybody wanted to talk about. When that happened, Wahlberg told us, he was absolutely shocked, especially since it had been such a difficult role for him to play. William H Macy has reflected on his late co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman eight years after his death.
Hoffman died of a drug overdose in 2014.
Speaking to Vulture in a recent interview about Paul Thomas Anderson’s modern classic Boogie Nights, Macy said that, looking back, he now realises that Hoffman was “in pain”.
“He was the best of us; he was never bad,” Macy said of Hoffman. “And I don’t know if it’s just looking back, but I now see that he was in pain. I think the weight of living was heavier on Phil than it is on other people.”
Macy recalled appearing on a panel alongside Hoffman at Sundance Film Festival in 2000 where the two got into a debate about method acting.

When Michael Stein, an actor, stand-up and friend of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, visited the set of Anderson’s pornography opus Boogie Nights in 1997, he noticed a cast member was missing. “I said,” recalls Stein, “‘Hey where’s Burt?’” Burt Reynolds was playing Jack Horner, a classy porno director and mentor to Mark Wahlberg’s up-and-coming porn stud, Dirk Diggler. The former Hollywood alpha would ultimately be Oscar-nominated for the role, but on the set, he was peeved. Anderson, chain-smoking American Spirit cigarettes with irritation, turned to Stein: “He’s in the trailer, man… He doesn’t want to hang out with us.’”
Refusing to come out of his trailer was one thing; elsewhere on the shoot, it almost came to blows – Reynolds took a swing at the 26-year-old Anderson. “I wasn’t there for that,” says Stein. “I heard about it though!”

As we head into the seventh month of 2022, it’s beginning to feel like the most familiar of holidays for those reading this in the U.S. The barbecue pits are grilling, the pools are filled with those swimming, and air conditioners are being turned up to full blast. Yep, the Fourth of July is almost here.
For some—perhaps many—that feels less celebratory this year than in Julys past. But whether you’ve got the patriotic fever or not, there’s plenty to do this July, and well beyond the holiday. Netflix, for one, has assembled a surprisingly robust list of old favorites to hit the streamer today. Below are those movies.

If you happened to catch the new Adam Sandler film “Hustle” on Netflix over the weekend — as many did, judging by the fact it immediately shot to #1 on the streamer — you might have been intrigued by the actor starring opposite the comedy legend. Sandler plays a Philadelphia 76ers scout named Stanley Sugarman who believes he’s found the next NBA star in Bo Cruz, a temperamental Spanish player who is more than a little rough around the edges. For the role of Cruz, director Jeremiah Zagar needed to find a great actor who could also play basketball. As it turned out, he found Juancho Hernangómez, an NBA player for the Utah Jazz who, in his acting debut, turns out to be a major onscreen presence.
The 26-year-old Hernangómez is in good company — the film features numerous cameos and performances from other players including Anthony Edwards, Dirk Nowitzki and Boben Marjanović,...

Screen Media announced today the acquisition of all rights to the documentary film Vince Carter: Legacy, which will premiere on the Crackle Plus Networks as an original title in October.
“Air Canada,” “Flying Man” and “Half-Man/Half-Amazing” were just a few nicknames attached to NBA star Vince Carter in his time with the Toronto Raptors, where he won Rookie of the Year honors with his high-flying game. Carter went on to become a Slam-Dunk Contest champion, an eight-time All Star, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the handful of players to score 51 points in a single game. He also may be the only player to ever to dunk on a 7’2″ defender by literally jumping over him.
What might be even more impressive, however, is Carter’s durability. High fly acts generally burn fast and bright, but Carter managed to play an NBA-record 22 seasons and, as his career wound down,...

The 2019 NBA Finals are in full swing. Fans cheered for their favorite teams all season long, but it was the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors that made it to end. While there's always a little trash-talking off the court, some fans take these rivalries to a whole new level. Jimmy Kimmel proved this to be true by having a few players and owners read hateful social media posts about themselves for Thursday's segment of "Mean Tweets." The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host recruited some big NBA names, too, including Kevin Durant, Charles Barkley, Ben Simmons, Chris Bosh, Bradley Beal, Dirk Nowitzki and Joel Embiid. Following its international rollout in June, YouTube Premium has launched a raft of new originals in France and Germany.
The ad-free subscription service’s first French originals are “Groom” and “Troublemakers” (“Les emmerdeurs”). “Groom” centers on the son of a wealthy hotelier who must become a bellboy to reclaim his inheritance. “The comedy follows the life of a grand hotel where internal wars, romantic relationships and a total lack of professionalism often put the welfare of hotel guests on the back burner,” according to YouTube’s description.
“Troublemakers” takes place in a French village occupied by the Nazis in 1942 and follows four irresponsible teenagers who suddenly gain superpowers and join the Resistance. During their adventures, the youths learn to accept the consequences of their powers and their actions and learn to work as a team.

“Troublemakers” takes place in a French village occupied by the Nazis in 1942 and follows four irresponsible teenagers who suddenly gain superpowers and join the Resistance. During their adventures, the youths learn to accept the consequences of their powers and their actions and learn to work as a team.

For one day, at least, the world managed to put aside its differences and celebrate a game beloved across the planet, honoring the two teams that made it to the final championship with thanks and gratitude.
The 2018 World Cup final brought moments of drama, political protests, celebration, controversy on at least one call, and ultimately, a celebration of human spirit and national unity that is rarely achieved outside of sports.
Crowds packed the lawns beneath the Eiffel Tower, and on the other side of the Seine River, more fans poured onto streets around the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe. Car horn honking was the way many celebrated in the seconds after France beat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.
Here are some reactions. Deadline will update as more appear:

Years ago, in the pages of Men’s Journal, I confessed to a psychotic obsession with the NFL draft. I dreamed of leaving journalism and being allowed to turn around a wayward team like the Jacksonville Jaguars using ideas like, “Always pick the guy who falls in the draft after a positive weed test.”
But Jaguars owner Shahid Khan never returned my calls. Moreover, I’m beginning to think the NFL won’t exist 20 years from now, because of that minor problem of the sport being physically lethal to its employees.

YouTube's favorite German producer is coming to the big screen. DJ Flula Borg, who is known for his improvisational music, his goofy on-screen personality, and his frequent guest appearances on other channels, has landed a role in Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to critically-and-commercially-acclaimed 2012 movie musical Pitch Perfect. Borg's exact role is unknown, though Deadline's Jen Yamato--who first reported the news--speculates that he will be a member of a rival a capella team that will take on the film's protagonists. As Yamato notes, that role would have star-making potential for Borg; Workaholics star Adam DeVine had a breakout role as the first film's antagonist. Borg is the latest YouTube star to make the jump to Hollywood. On June 13th, Jimmy Tatro will make his film debut when 22 Jump Street arrives in theaters. Later this year, Harley Morenstein will feature in Kevin Smith's Tusk, and Ray William Johnson recently landed...

On Saturday, during the Dirk Nowitzki Celebrity Baseball Game, singer Nick Jonas had a little trouble running the bases on a pop fly, colliding with an infielder and getting knocked to the ground as if his bones had completely disappeared.
The Jonas Brother joked about the incident after the charity game via Twitter.
At least he has a sense of humor about it. Maybe his mind was still on all the Miss USA competitors. Jonas hosted the annual beauty contest on June 16 along with Giuliana Rancic.
Jonas and his brothers also released a new single this month titled "The First Time." It's off their upcoming album, their first in almost four years, which is sure to make their fans forget all about little base-running mishaps like this one.
