Robert Zemeckis has always loved his toys, but the "Back to the Future" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" director's fondness for tinkering with the latest filmmaking technology has eclipsed his passion for storytelling for a long time. However, between his love-it-or-hate-it Best Picture winner "Forrest Gump" and his motion-capture phase in the aughts, there was a period where Zemeckis found a string of projects that eloquently married his love of tech with his maturing sensibilities as a storyteller. This began with 1997's "Contact," a film adaptation of the late Carl Sagan's 1985 novel of the same name and possibly the unofficial start of the "Matthew McConaughey Takes Off His Shirt in All His Movies" era (but feel free to fact-check me on that).

Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase has brought an array of genres to the Moody Theater in Austin over four nights, from hip-hop to música mexicana, urbano to Afrobeats, and beyond. The final night was all about guitars, bringing together acts from indie rock, country, and more who love the instrument. And for Faye Webster, that instrument is pedal steel guitar in particular.

One of the more notable features of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was its rockin' soundtrack of familiar 1970s hits. The film's main character, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), was abducted from Earth as a boy and raised among space aliens. One of the only things he kept as a vestige of his life on Earth was a Walkman and a mixtape that was gifted to him by his dying mother. The tape contained "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede, David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream," The Runaway's "Cherry Bomb," and Rupert Holmes' oft-reviled "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)." Peter Quill's mother had interesting taste. Norman Greenbaum's popular pick "Spirit in the Sky" played in the film's preview and is on its soundtrack record, but isn't actually played in the final cut of the movie.

In November 2006 Microsoft introduced the Zune, a digital music player designed to compete with Apple's iPod, which already had a five-year head start in the marketplace. But I don't have to tell you that. If there's one thing history has taught us, it's that you should never underestimate the appeal of a good old-fashioned Zune. The Zune's dominance of the digital marketplace continues today, and it's a very safe bet that every single person reading this article has a Zune in their pocket right now, probably playing all the latest hit songs from Puddle of Mudd and Sugar Ray.
Yes, yes, I kid, I kid. The Zune was discontinued in 2011 after lackluster sales, and seemed destined to fade into near-total obscurity until filmmaker James Gunn resurrected it as a cheap joke in 2017 at the end of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." After two whole feature films scored...

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” had Florence Welch overcome with emotion.
On Monday, the Florence + the Machine frontwoman shared a TikTok video of her reaction to a scene from the latest Marvel movie featuring a “Dog Days Are Over” needle drop.

The song comes during the film’s climactic scene, and evidently it worked its magic on the artist.
“So I cried all the way through this movie but when the Guardians of the Galaxy started dancing to ‘Dog Days; I really lost it,” she wrote in the caption.
In the video, Welch bursts out crying soon after her song starts playing.

The Oscars In Memoriam segment gave viewers a chance to remember the memorable names in film who died over the past year. But every year, viewers are surprised to see that a few recognizable names were omitted.
Beloved comedian Bob Saget, who had a small handful of film appearances in movies including Richard Pryor’s “Critical Condition,” drew the most outrage on social media. However, Saget did win a student Oscar for his 1977 documentary “Through Adam’s Eyes.”
Norm Macdonald was also left out of the segment. Like Saget, Macdonald is best known for his TV roles, but also appeared in a handful of movies, including “Dr. Dolittle,” “Grown Ups,” “Billy Madison” and “Back to Norm.”
Most of the others mentioned as omissions were principally known for their appearances on television, not film.

Right from the start, Norman Greenbaum had a good feeling about “Spirit in the Sky.”
“At first the record company said, ‘Gee, they don’t play anything like this on Top 20,'” the singer-songwriter tells Rolling Stone of his immortal boogie-rock anthem. “But obviously they were wrong. We always knew it was going to be a hit. It just sounded too good.”

Despite a tepid halftime performance and a 10-year low in ratings, Sunday night’s Super Bowl telecast was still a healthy one for top music publishers and record labels, many of whom saw overall volume and revenue on par with 2018’s record year of activity.
Among publishers, Sony/Atv secured seven synch licenses in national brand commercials, followed by Universal Music Publishing Group with seven, Kobalt with six, BMG with five and one for indie publisher Spirit Music Group. Warner/Chappell secured at least two, but had yet to provide a final tally at press time. The use of music grew even higher when extended to TV network promos andmovie trailers, though synch negotiations for those spots are typically shorter term and less high-price than those on behalf of brands.

A quick review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon as I stop eating the islanders... Even stripped down to two stories instead of the show's usual three, "Captain Peralta" bit off more than it could reasonably chew in terms of its title plot. Jake's abandonment by his father Roger is one of the defining events of his life, so the idea of Roger trying to patch things up is a big deal — even though it turned out, as Charles assumed, that he was just going to let Jake down yet again. The whole thing needed more build-up than it got, whether as part of a multi-episode arc (assuming Bradley Whitford was up for doing more than one), or simply pacing this story differently. it felt like we got dropped in on the idea that the Peralta men were communicating again, and then we got caught up in...

How did we get to the stage where trailer launches seem like bigger events than the movies they're promoting? Hype and buzz rule all, but that said we'll admit we still get a giddy thrill out of seeing a good trailer. The 2-minute promo has become an art form in itself, and in 2014 Hollywood went to town when it came to selling the biggest and best films.
Digital Spy looks at 10 of the best trailers of the year below...
10. Gone Girl
David Fincher knows how to put a trailer together, and the tease for his adaptation of Gone Girl used Richard Butler's rendition of 'She' to gloriously unsettling effect. On first glance this looks like a fairly routine disappearance thriller, but in keeping Rosamund Pike's Amy Dunne in the background there's a sense that maybe Fincher and author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn are holding something back.

James Gunn has quickly jumped up to the top of my favorite directors list. Not just because of the awesome film's he has directed, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither, but because he is a freaking cool guy. Gunn is also heavily connected with social media, and today, as promised, he revealed the original Awesome Mix Vol. 1 for Guardians of the Galaxy on Facebook. Here's his reveal and breakdown of the the music:

We’ve posted quite a few Guardians of the Galaxy mashups on our site. My favorite so far is the Star Wars mashup that cut footage from the Star Wars trilogy into a more modern style trailer that used Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky” and Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” — the two songs used most heavily in the promotion of GotG. That thing was perfection. This new mashup by Robert Jones parodies the Friends intro, using the classic sitcom’s theme to introduce characters from Marvel’s runaway hit. I love/hate this mashup. I love it because it’s a funny concept executed well. I hate it because it immediately forced my brain to consider which Guardians of the Galaxy character would be which Friends character. Now I’m gonna force you to read what I came up with:

(Cbr) When Mondo announced early this month that it will release the hit soundtrack "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" on deluxe vinyl, a common response was, “That’s great, but shouldn’t it be on cassette?” Well, now it will be, undoubtedly leading to refrains of, “What’s a cassette?” According to Billboard, the limited-edition release from Marvel Music/Hollywood Records will arrive Nov. 17, exclusively to independent retailers associated with Record Store Day. The first cassette released by Disney Music Group since 2003, it will remain available through Dec. 31. Each cassette will come with a digital-download version of the soundtrack. Debuting July 29, the soundtrack to Marvel’s blockbuster space adventure spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200; it’s the first soundtrack consisting entirely of previously released songs to reach the top of the chart. According to Billboard, "Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1" has sold more than 543,000 copies.

Mondo has announced that they will be releasing the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack on vinyl, and they've revealed the art and specs for it. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year, and one of the things I loved about it most was the soundtrack and how that music played an important part of telling the story. That walkman and those songs were like characters themselves.
The art you see above was created by Tyler Stout, and one of the other cool things about the vinyl release is that each one will come randomly packed with one of the following 9 mini prints. They are currently taking pre-orders right here.

If you're like me, you've spent the last month-and-a-half continually jamming out to the sounds of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. The music selection featured in the movie is easily one of the most entertaining and enjoyable aspects of the film, and movie-goers will spend years remembering the time they first watched Peter Quill slide across Morag listening to "Come and Get Your Love" or sing "Ooh Child" in the third act. But did you know that there was originally going to be an additional music sequence that wound up getting cut from the film? While I imagine some of you are still wondering what happened to the inclusion of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" in Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn has reveled on his Instagram account that the film was originally going to include a scene featuring "Magic," the 1974 track by the Scottish...

Music plays a big part in "Guardians of the Galaxy" in an interesting way, as the Star-Lord cruises the galaxy listening to sweet '70s tunes his late mom left him on a mix tape. As writer/director James Gunn explained, "that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that."
Naturally, these nostalgic but rockin' tunes also resonated with fans of "GoTG." (Cbr) - Until now, we've only gotten hints of the musical tastes of the icons of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- AC/DC on Tony Stark's in-armor playlist, the Falcon turning Captain America on to Marvin Gaye -- but in "Guardians of the Galaxy," audiences get a complete sense of Star-Lord's '60s and '70s-era power-pop leanings -- and, as James Gunn, Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel attest, it's as appropriately awesome a mix tape as the cassette label suggests. The lineup of songs is epic, in terms of pop touchstones from their era: Swedish rockers Blue Swede's 1974 smash hit cover of "Hooked On a Feeling;" "Go All the Way," the 1972 breakthrough hit for songwriter/lead singer Eric Carmen's early band The Raspberries; "Moonage Daydream," David Bowie's 1971 glam rock ode to an alien messiah; blues rocker Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," from...

Hollywood Records and Marvel are releasing three albums from Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy on Tuesday, July 29.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe soundtrack features classic 1970s songs from the film, plus score by composer Tyler Bates (“Watchmen,” “Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”). Music plays a major role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy as the great songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way.
Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, “One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape [Awesome Mix #1] that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that’s the only thing he has left of his mother and that’s the only thing he has left of his home on Earth.

Under normal circumstances, I’m a firm believer in the notion that less is more when it comes to promotional campaigns for movies. Many a time, I have been initially excited about a film’s release, only to realize that I’ve basically seen the entire thing already in clips and trailers, and got massively bored with it. Surprisingly, Guardians Of The Galaxy is shaping up to be the exception to that rule. Despite the fact that today’s TV spot is the seventh to be released – not including full-length trailers, teaser trailers, promotional images, character posters and full posters – this promotional campaign continues to whet my appetite, as opposed to smothering it until it’s dead.

Much of the marketing for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has leaned heavily on 1970s hits like Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” or Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” and from the looks of the new track listing for the film’s soundtrack, those are just the tip of the iceberg.

With a collection of tunes that Peter Quill himself would approve of, the cover and tracklist of the soundtrack for "Guardians of the Galaxy" were revealed Tuesday, and both have a nostalgia-inducing vibe.
Harkening back to its use in the film's first trailer, the soundtrack kicks off with Blue Swede's 1974 hit "Hooked on a Feeling," and the compilation's affinity for tunes from the '60s and '70s doesn't stop there. The cover seems to be cribbed from Quill's personal cassette collection, depicting a tape in a Walkman (what old people used to listen to music with, kids) labeled "Awesome Mix Vol. 1."
The retro selections no doubt have personal meaning for "Guardians" director James Gunn, who shared a photo of the soundtrack cover on his Facebook page with the note that he was "So happy [Marvel] had the balls to go with this simple design." He later posted a picture of an old Sony Walkman,...

Tracks like" Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" and "Hooked On A Feeling" by Blue Swede have accented the previously released marketing materials and have done a great job of marrying space opera imagery with a fun and upbeat tone. So what would happen if you applied that exact same music with another film? Maybe one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time? Enter this new video that remixes Star Wars with Marvel Studio's upcoming comic book movie blockbuster. Obviously this trailer has the advantage of being cut in a more modern context and includes footage...

The first wave of teasers and trailers for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy emphasized the comic book movie’s most eccentric qualities, a wild bunch of universe-saving criminals that include a tree, a raccoon, and a green-skinned Zoë Saldana. If you never read Guardians in print, it didn’t really matter, according to the studio; instead, it chose to play up the “these aren’t you older brother’s superheroes” angle. “Hey, we’re playing Blue Swede’s ‘Hooked on a Feeling’ and Norman Greenbaum’s ‘Spirit in the Sky,’” the clips blared. “That’s how you know this movie is cool!

Hello again, dear readers. After a longer-than-anticipated absence, I’m back, and I hope all of you have seen Godzilla by now. We’re truly in the summer movie season as this point, with big movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past and Maleficent coming out week after week, and last Friday saw the release of the Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow. In the meantime, this overdue installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes another look at one of the more promising late summer films – Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Ever since it was announced, the prevailing wisdom was that Marvel was taking a huge gamble on Guardians of the Galaxy. That prevailing wisdom has always been wrong. At least this property — which isn’t all that popular even among comic book readers — isn’t a gamble in the same way that Iron Man was. That was the case of a third rate hero getting the big budget, cinematic treatment. This is the case of a third rate group of heroes getting the big budget, cinematic treatment from one of the most trusted blockbuster companies in the world. People will be going for the Marvel name, regardless of what the heroes call themselves. This new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer is proof. Or at least it’s proof that Marvel doesn’t see this as the same gamble everyone else does. They’ve turned wacky all the way up to 11 here. If...

When the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" trailer debuted, with its singular swagger and gonzo sense of humor, it became very clear that this was a very different type of Marvel movie. With the new, full-length trailer, just how different a movie it is becomes even more apparent. Quite frankly, if you aren't jumping around or clapping along or something by the end of this trailer, you might need to check your pulse. It's that good.
The new trailer introduces us to the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, a group of misfits tasked with defending the cosmos from an ancient evil, in much, much greater detail. There's Peter Quill aka Star Lord (Chris Pratt), a cunning thief and raconteur; Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a powerful, green-skinned warrior; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a monster on a quest for revenge; Groot (Vin Diesel), a sentient tree being; and Rocket (Bradley Cooper...

Two new photos and a breakdown of the new trailer for Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" have gone online, the latter courtesy of the great folks over at Latino Review.
Amongst the highlights from the lengthy description:
The choice of music this time in the latter scenes is the classic "Spirit in the Sky," apparently the original Norman Greenbaum version (not the Doctor & the Medics version).
The early scene from the first trailer is extended with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) trying to escape his pursuers.
Our first look at Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser. His fist closes around a glowing red energy source and the trailer cuts to an explosion. His ship also unleashes fighters over a peaceful planet.
Our first look at Glenn Close as Nova Prime Irani Rael who says "Are you telling me, the fate of twelve billion people, is in the hands of these thugs?"
The...

I know we would all rather be watching the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy instead of reading about it, but I'm so excited for the movie that I'll take what I can get! Our friends at Latino-Review had the opportunity to see the upcoming trailer for the film recently, and they have a very detailed description of it. There's no word on when this second trailer for the film will be released, but I'll impatiently sit here in front of my computer for as long as it takes until it's released.
If you want to spoil it for yourself… here ya go!
Shots of Star Lord in his mask, full outfit, probably from the opening we’ve seen since early on. “My name is Peter Quill” says Chris Pratt over a nice hero shot, then we cut back to Dijimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer and two of...

Somedays, someone shows you a new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer and you know not to ask who this person is or where s/he got it. Those are good days to be a comic book geek and - you lucky readers you - a good day for a guy to use his words to describe something he can’t legally show you.
I’ve already gotten in trouble once for people thinking I had actually stolen content, so let me reiterate how much I do Not have this trailer. Ok. Onto the notes I managed to scribble on down, translated into sentences, because no one wants to see my chicken scratch.

When we were in college we had a friend who made it his mission to use Star Trek as the basis for every paper he wrote. Whether it was for a communications, English or Political Science class, he planned on looping it all back to Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. Shockingly he pulled it off.
He was also the guy that turned us on to William Shatner singing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” He would silence a room of crowded college kids, so that everyone would be forced to bask in the glory of that performance. Had the Internet existed back then, he probably would have plugged a computer into a flat screen TV and made the partiers watch Shatner’s “Rocket Man” duet with himself. Sadly that wouldn’t be possible for a few (or more) years.
We lost touch with that...

Captain Kirk is headed back to space.
William Shatner, the Emmy winning TV icon, announced the track listing and details for his new space-inspired cover album, Searching For Major Tom. The album will feature a large number of heavy metal covers, as well as songs by U2, Frank Sinatra, Queen and Pink Floyd.
Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. His first album, The Transformed Man, raised eyebrows with its bizarre covers, which, in what would become his trademark style, boasted dramatic readings of lyrics over music. HIs best known track was a recording of Sonny & Cher's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Check out Urlesque's ranking of his ten best cover songs here.
Shatner announced the album via Twitter back in February.

William Shatner, 80, is not done rocking out. Later this year -- no specific date has been set, but don't worry, we'll keep you updated -- the actor-singer-spoken word artist plans to release a new album, "Searching for Major Tom." It's a cornucopia of corny covers all orbiting around one central theme: space.
But unlike Shatner's live one-man performance classics, the Shat has enlisted some big time help. Bootsy Collins lends a hand on Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science." Brad Paisley sings along on Steve Miller's "Space Cowboy," Peter Frampton sits in on "Spirit in the Sky," and even Toots of Toots and the Maytals is adding his vocals to The Police's "Walking on the Moon."

On Thursday, I posted a Cinematical Seven list featuring seven songs that had gotten a new lease on life after appearing in a movie (even if several of them made me stabby ... and our own Jessica Barnes agrees with me). I then opened up the floor to readers to weigh in with some of their own choices, but one commenter, @nixskits, took things in the opposite direction: he listed songs that are totally overused in movies. That was such a great topic that I wanted to do something with it -- and that something turned into this article.
I don't want to get too crazy here, but I do want to point out a few of the songs that send me grabbing for the remote so I can press the mute button, or groaning when they start to play (usually over a montage ... ) in a movie theater. The film industry...

With all the contortions and mutations that the vampire movie has taken in the past 75 (heck, the past 2) years, it is quite refreshing to see that there remains interesting potential in the genre. Take for instance, Faye Jackson‘s debut feature, Strigoi, which trumps Bram Stoker in going rigorously back to the roots of the mythology in Romanian folklore, pulls things forward through both World Wars and culminates in a failed medical doctor sending a picture (via blackberry) of the townsfolk dealing with the undead at the local catholic church. Bring Backup.
The very indie British filmmakers, obviously in love with the local terrain and history, bring a maturity to the genre (along for the ride: handsome cinematography) that is most definitely lacking in the modern trend of nosferatu sightings (with the obvious exception one one Swedish entry).
