Screenwest has announced the 27 recipients of the Bright Ideas Crew Capacity Initiative, who will share in more than $126,000 in funding to deliver 25 projects.
Targeted at below-the-line crew members and directors from the Wa Screen industry, the initiative invited applicants to propose a ‘bright idea’ to keep them working, developing and creating long term screen industry outcomes during the Covid-19 social isolation period.
Some of the selected ‘bright ideas’ include an online exhibition to showcase the Wa industry by photographer David Dare Parker; development of an online platform to house resources for production designers by Emma Fletcher; development of a guide to assist productions to go paperless by assistant director Mark Boskell; and a series of recorded conversations with a variety of West Australian freelance crew doyens, musing on past experiences and revealing industry insights by Ad John Fairhead.

Screenwest has announced 11 projects will share in $156,000 of script development funding via its latest Small Screen Scripted Development round.
The fund is aimed at getting scripted television or web projects ready for market, and is split into two stages – the first being concept development, followed by series development
Two projects – yet to be announced – that were previously funded through stage one will move through to stage two this round.
Screenwest head of screen investment and strategic projects Matthew Horrocks said: The popularity of this initiative is growing. The progression of two projects funded in the inaugural round to stage two demonstrates the opportunity provided to really ensure scripts can undergo a rigorous development process and ultimately deliver high‐quality screen projects ready for market.”

Barbara Connell starts at Screenwest today as drama development manager, responsible for the delivery and management of the agency’s drama development programs including the assessment and selection processes of these funding initiatives for all platforms.
In effect she takes over from Ross Grayson Bell who departed as Screenwest scripted executive in June after one year in the post.
Connell joins from Demand Film where she was chief operating officer and director, development, in charge of early acquisition of narrative features and feature documentaries and working with filmmakers to develop and deliver finished products for theatrical distribution in multiple territories.

Swedish actress Sofia Helin, who starred in all four seasons of The Bridge, is co-starring with Aaron Pedersen in the second series of Bunya Productions’ ABC crime drama Mystery Road.
Helin, who played Saga Norén, a homicide detective from Malmö, in the Swedish/Danish film noir crime series which screened here on Sbs, is cast as archaeologist Professor Sondra Elmquist.
The professor is conducting a dig near a remote coastal town when she encounters Pedersen’s Detective Jay Swan, who has moved to the town to be closer to his family and is investigating a grisly case.
Warwick Thornton and Wayne Blair are sharing the directing duties on the six episodes produced by David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin, with Thornton as the Dop.

Production, post and distribution company Curious has announced a ramped up production slate across both Australian and Nz projects, including Pat Nalin.s highly anticipated Beyond the Known World due for completion in mid-2015.
Set in The Himalayas, the Nz-India co-production follows an estranged couple who journey to India in order to search for their missing daughter. The cast includes David Wenham (Lord of the Rings, 300, Top of the Lake), Sia Trokenheim (Step Dave, Everything We Loved), and Emmanuelle Beart (8 Femmes) and is currently in post-production at Curious Auckland.
Matthew Horrocks and Kristian Eek will produce while Matt Noonan and Sarah Noonan are the EPs. Arclight Films is handling international sales. Curious will distribute in Australia and Nz.
Director Taika Watiti of Boy and What We Do in The Shadows has a new comic adventure up his sleeve, with Hunt for the Wilderpeople commencing production on May 18, 2015 in New Zealand.
