Cannes is not lacking for glamor this year, even in the documentary lineup.
Among the films premiering at the festival is Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes, an HBO feature documentary directed by Nanette Burstein and produced by J.J. Abrams, Glen Zipper, Sean M. Stuart, and Bill Gerber. The documentary draws on conversations with the star recorded decades ago for an autobiography.
“Entirely through the efforts of the [Taylor] estate, they were able to track those tapes down and reclaim them,” Zipper explained in an interview just before he flew to Cannes. “I remember getting an email from one of the trustees of the estate of a picture of the tapes in a box on a private jet on their way back to Los Angeles, strapped in with a seatbelt.”

Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

The late comedian John Candy is getting the documentary treatment from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds.
Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire an untitled film that Hanks has been quietly directing. Reynolds — who, like Candy, hails from Canada — is producing alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The film will explore the life and legacy of the iconic funnyman Candy, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. But insiders say the film will go beyond the persona and delve into the inner life that Candy kept private off-screen. With the full support of Candy’s widow, Rose, and their two children, Jen and Chris, Hanks will utilize never-before-seen home videos, archives and interviews with the family to explore the man behind the movie star. Candy became one of the most in-demand comic stars of the 1980s and early ’90s, appearing in...

Colin Hanks is putting his friendships first.
The 39-year-old actor-turned-filmmaker is back in the director's chair for a new HBO documentary about the 2015 Bataclan terror attack. But Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) not only recounts the horrifying tale, it also follows the band on their journey back to perform in the City of Light in February 2016. For Hanks, the project was incredibly personal.
"I've known these guys in the band for a long time. They're my close friends," he told Et at the film's Thursday night premiere at the Avalon in Hollywood, California.
"When they were going back to Paris to finish their concert and resume their tour, I thought it would be an interesting opportunity to show something positive and to show people collectively coming together and moving on with their lives," he continued. "From that initial idea sprung this movie that really sort of transcends the subject matter and is really...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the North American rights to "All Things Must Pass." Produced by Sean Stuart and directed by Colin Hanks, the film premiered this past March at South by Southwest. Charting the rise and fall of once-great, now-gone music chain Tower Records, the doc took seven years to complete and included a successful Kickstarter campaign with over 1,600 backers. Is it ironic that the Internet saved this film after killing its subject? Everyone thinks the web destroyed Tower Records, but this film explores whether or not that's the whole story. In 1999, the company made a (very cool) billion dollars. Seven years later, it filed for bankruptcy. What really happened? We'll soon find out. "It's already been an incredible journey, making this film with such a talented team – from our amazing group of producers to our writer and editor, and our phenomenal film subjects," said Hanks. "We could not be more thrilled.

The Hanks family really loves music.
ETonline sat down with Colin Hanks at South By Southwest in Austin, TX, where he unveiled a new documentary on the rise and fall of Tower Records called All Things Must Pass.
"This documentary is about a guy by the name of Russ Solomon who started selling used 78s out of his father's drug store in 1938 and went on to create Tower Records," Hanks tells ETonline. "[He] had a motley crew of characters who he worked with, who helped him build this company up and became a family. We chronicled the rise of the company and we sort of popped the…misconception why people think the Internet killed Tower. That's not really 100 percent accurate. That's part of it, but not entirely."
