Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Films may currently be in production on the first of the studio’s rebooted and reimagined superhero franchise pictures, but that doesn’t mean executives can’t make announcements about the second one.
“Supergirl: World of Tomorrow” will hit theaters (and IMAX) on June 26, 2026, as per reports. Milly Alcock, the 24-year-old Australian actress, will play Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Danvers, the cousin of Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton, also known as Kal-El, also known as Clark Kent, also known as Superman. Kara Zor-El, by the way, should not be confused with Kara Zor-l, also known as Karen Starr, also known as Power Girl, who is also Superman’s cousin, but, like, from a different universe. It’s complicated. Alcock is best known for the part of Young Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon.”

Supergirl’s Danvers siblings have moved on to new TV gigs, but that’s not stopping fans — and Chyler Leigh — from wishing for a sisterly reunion.
Leigh and Melissa Benoist, of course, played Alex Danvers and Kara Danvers (aka Supergirl) on the aforementioned CW drama, which concluded its run in 2021. The actresses also formed a strong friendship while filming the show, with Leigh once describing Benoist as “my inspiration, my friend, my #soulsister” on Instagram.

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in March 2018. It has since been updated with new entries.]
It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

She may not be wearing Kara Danvers’ glasses, but Melissa Benoist definitely has her serious journalist face on in Max’s new series The Girls on the Bus (premiering this Thursday, March 14, with two episodes).

As The Flash hit the midpoint of its final season, a visit from Nia Nal aka Dreamer brought much drama, but also some updates on Supergirl and a few of her superfriends.
For starters — and as set up during Ryan Wilder aka Batwoman’s recent visit to Central City — Nia (played by Supergirl‘s Nicole Maines) showing up unannounced at Central City Citizen Media to ask Iris for help wasn’t entirely random. Because apparently, Iris took Ryan up on her offer and recently — albeit off-screen, grrr — joined Ryan, Nia, Kara Danvers/Supergirl and her sister Alex/Sentinel for mimosa brunch.

As much as we try to pretend it's not, television recasting is almost always a big deal. When stage performers get recast in a play, or characters get written out between movie sequels, it's bearable because these types of stories have a natural end point that helps audiences feel some closure about the character who's gone. Yet for TV shows, which encourage binge-watching that blurs the lines between seasons, the change can be jarring and distracting.
The spectrum of effective recasts isn't so much from terrible to great as it is from wildly noticeable to slightly unobtrusive. Whether it's the sudden appearance of scruffy, brown-eyed Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones," the revolving door of Bobby Drapers on "Mad Men," or the depressing Aunt Viv switch-up on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," recasts usually leave something to be desired.

Coming off six seasons as the lead of Supergirl, Melissa Benoist is poised to reunite with Berlanti Productions on another series. Benoist is in negotiations to headline The Girls on the Bus, which just received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max, I have learned. Benoist also is expected to serve as a producer on the drama series, an adaptation of Amy Chozick’s bestselling book Chasing Hillary, from Julie Plec, Chozick, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV. Reps for HBO Max and Wbtv declined comment.

When Supergirl first debuted on October 26th, 2015, it was part of the CBS fall lineup. In between seasons one and two, an important change was made: transferring this show over to a network full of comic book content. Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Supergirl two-parter series finale.
It’s all or nothing for Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers and her Super Friends in the final hours of the CW’s Supergirl.
Kicking off with “The Last Gauntlet,” Supergirl picks up right were the previous installment left off – with Esme (Mila Jones) in Lex (Jon Cryer) and Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) possession. A hostage in hand, the criminals-turned-lovers propose that Kara, Alex (Chyler Leigh) and the rest of the gang trade in their totems for the kid. Of course, this is before Lex and Nyxly realize that the Love totem, absorbed by Esme in the previous episode, is already looking for a new host.

Supergirl Season 6 Episode 9
A number of much-loved shows are coming to an end, or have recently, that in some ways could have pushed their luck, but in other ways were a product of a moment – a moment that they looked up to find had passed. Veep stands out as a clear example, as does Brooklyn 99, which is doing its best to be a fun cop show that knows cops aren’t good guys without – losing all its levity or becoming a documentary. While many of us will miss Supergirl, and we might even struggle with the calculus of losing the show just as Superman and Lois came on the scene, this episode serves as a reminder that the titular character’s overwhelmingly positive worldview – one that the show at large and many of the Super Friends all adopt – can...

It's almost the end of the line for The CW's Supergirl, which wrapped production on its final season over the weekend.
Melissa Benoist, who plays Kara Danvers, aka the Girl of Steel, took to social media to say goodbye to the series.
“Thank you for an incredible 6 years — the cast who became family, everyone who worked on the show, all of you who watched us week after week ♥️♥️♥️,” she shared in a snap with co-stars Chyler Leigh and David Harewood.
“That’s a wrap on @supergirlcw.”
Harewood, who plays J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter, also said goodbye to the series:
Oh boy that was tough. Held it together right up until the end but there’s no superpower that can stop raw emotion. A big thank you to all the fans, for all the tweets and letters, all mightily appreciated.

"6 incredible years with these two incredible people.

When John Wesley Shipp of The CW’s The Flash guest-stars on DC’s Stargirl this season, it will officially connect the latter superhero series to the Arrowverse at large, and thus pave the way for future interactions between shows.
Stargirl, within the greater scheme of things, is set on Earth-2 — meaning a different Earth than where the likes of Barry Allen, Kara Danvers and Ryan Wilder fight crime. But when Shipp shows up in Stargirl Season 2, Episode 9 as as the Golden Age version of the scarlet speedster, in a pivotal flashback episode that establishes Garrick as a member of...

“The Flash” director Andy Muschietti has given another sneak peek on his Instagram on Friday, this time giving fans a preview of Sasha Calle’s Supergirl costume.

Six episodes into “Superman & Lois,” we’ve gotten a lot of clarity on how “Crisis on Infinite Earths” changed things for the Man of Steel. And though the massive event gave him two sons instead of one, it didn’t change anything else about his family — so why on Earth has Supergirl not been mentioned at all yet?
Technically, “Superman & Lois” is a “Supergirl” spin-off show. Clark Kent/Superman made his debut in the Arrowverse in “The Adventures of Supergirl,” the first episode of the second season of “Supergirl.” He stuck around for a couple of episodes, then primarily appeared in network crossover events after that. Superman never showed up as a solo act anywhere else in the Arrowverse.
“The Flash” got started in much the same way. Grant Gustin appeared as Barry Allen twice in the second season of “Arrow.” His third episode, which was planned as backdoor pilot,...

Kara Danvers and the Super Friends have been through a lot at this point
Originally published March 31; updated to reflect recent plot developments.
The sixth and final season of “Supergirl” just hit the mid-point and, let’s get honest: Kara Danvers and the Super Friends have been through the wringer many times over at this point. The mid-season finale literally saw most of the super friends experience their deepest fears, thanks to a loose Phantom. It was…rough, to say the least.
Can we finally get them into therapy?
They’ve had a therapist within reach for awhile now: Kelly Olsen (James’ sister), the psychologist specializing in trauma who is currently dating Alex Danvers. And, according to series star Azie Tesfai, who has played Kelly since Season 3, the “Supergirl” cast talks fairly often about this, and like to imagine what an actual Super Friends group therapy session would look like.

After the season premiere of “Supergirl” sent Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) to the Phantom Zone, things have been a bit hectic for the Super Friends back in National City. While they desperately try to bring her back, Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), Sentinel (Chyler Leigh), Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Dreamer (Nicole Maines) have taken over hero duties, with Dreamer pulling double time, also covering for Kara at CatCo as just regular Nia Nal.
It’s a stressful time, and things may not be getting better any time soon — particularly for Nia. In ranking the Super Friends based on how badly they need therapy, Azie Tesfai, who plays Kelly Olsen on “Supergirl,” put Nia in the top three, only behind Kara and Lena (Katie McGrath), citing her reasoning as Nia having a lot going on in the final season of “Supergirl.” At that, Nicole Maines isn’t all that surprised.

It’s been a long road but it’s official: Every one of the Super Friends now knows that Kara Danvers is Supergirl. Last week’s season premiere saw Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) make the decision to tell her girlfriend Kelly (Azie Tesfai) about her sister’s secret, and this week’s episode saw the aftermath of the reveal — but not the reveal itself.
Where just about every other character has had some form of conversation with Kara (Melissa Benoist) about her secret — some long and drawn out, others with a simple whip of her glasses or a jump off a building — the conversation between Alex and Kelly apparently happened off-screen, leaving some fans scratching their heads.
But, according to “Supergirl” showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner, there is a reason why it wasn’t a big to-do when it came to Kelly. Most of it came down to simply...

(Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the season six premiere of “Supergirl”)
The final season of “Supergirl” is starting off on a rough note for Supergirl herself. The final moments of the premiere saw Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) returned once again to the Phantom Zone, this time at the hands of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer). And so the question for the beginning of this final season is simple: can the Super Friends get her back?
The odds may not be as dire as they seem. After all, they finally have a full team in their corner. Lena (Katie McGrath) is in on Kara’s secret now and making peace with it, simultaneously making Lena an invaluable, full-time asset to the team. And, based on the final moments of the premiere, Kelly Olsen will soon be in the know as well. Because now it’s official: Kelly is the last to know that Kara Danvers is Supergirl.

“Supergirl” is ready to lay it all on the line one more time. In the trailer for the final season of the superhero series, The CW is showing fans exactly what the titular Kryptonian is dealing with.
When we last saw Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and the Super Friends, they had managed to stop Leviathan, with Braniac 5 (Jesse Rath) seemingly sacrificing himself in the process. As it turns out, that was all part of Lex Luthor’s (Jon Cryer) master plan: take over Obsidian North, get Leviathan out of the way with the help of Brainy — thereby driving a wedge into the Super Friends — and as always, take over the world.
The good news is, Brainy seems to have survived. The bad news is, Lex Luthor is now somehow immortal, thanks to some help from his mother. And this time, his plan isn’t just to wipe out Supergirl. “Once I fix this planet,...

Here she comes to save the day: The final season of “Supergirl” is soaring to The CW sooner than expected.

Tyler Hoechlin is the latest in a long line of Superman actors to wear the blue and red rights (and cape) of the Man of Steel, as well as the iconic spectacles of his alter ego, Clark Kent.
But according to the “Superman & Lois” star, the role of Clark Kent/Superman is actually five people in one. For those who want a breakdown, it’s Superman and three different versions of Clark Kent.
“So I’ve always kind of looked at it and really like there’s five, at least five different versions of him,” Hoechlin said Monday during the show’s virtual TCA panel.
We’ll let him explain what he means: “Superman has the symbol and no one knows who he is, or when he’s closer to people and they know who he is,” he said. Those two are pretty easy to define. Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) obviously knows who he is,...

Cast your minds back to last May. In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and the sheer unbeatable scale of “Crisis on Infinite Earths”, it was announced that 2021’s Arrowverse crossover would be a smaller event between two shows – namely, Batwoman and Superman & Lois. Since then, however, the virus hasn’t cleared up as expected and the former series has got itself a new lead. As such, the planned crossover will no longer be going ahead.

With Arrow ending earlier this year and Supergirl and Black Lightning following suit with their upcoming seasons, the Arrowverse is changing faster than Barry can run up the side of a building.
There are talks of multiple new series and spin-offs joining the fold, and Superman & Lois already even has a premiere date!
Before The CW gets the chance to add a million more series to the successful comic book universe created for the small screen and cancel ones we already love, we wanted to pay homage to the shows that started it all.
And as a note, Stargirl technically isn't a part of the Arrowverse -- yet -- so we did not include it on our list.
6. Black Lightning
This last place ranking does not mean that Black Lightning is a bad show, but it has felt so far removed from the Arrowverse for the majority of its run.

And as a note, Stargirl technically isn't a part of the Arrowverse -- yet -- so we did not include it on our list.

Earlier this year, we learned that Supergirl would be concluding with its upcoming sixth season. Arrowverse fans were devastated by the news that the Girl of Steel’s solo show would be no more, though the cast and crew promised that the final run will be better than ever and send off the series in style. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. But, first, some 2020 Tumblr statistics:
