Mack, the sly protagonist of Netflix’s endearing new rom-com Players, always closes. The 33-year-old journalist has a back pocket stuffed with plays that rarely fail. Want to convince the stranger at the bar that you can offer her the world? Or bag your next-door neighbor? Mack and her friends can walk you through the moves, honed over 12 years, to force an interaction.
The plays work well because Mack, Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), Brannagan (Augustus Prew) and Ryan aka “Little” (Joel Courtney) are committed to research. Establishing a play requires a careful assessment of the target, the situation and the context. The plays can always help you land a steamy bar make-out, a one-night stand or maybe even a date. What they can’t do, Mack learns, is get you into a relationship.
Players, directed by Trish Sie, is the kind of romantic comedy that wears the conventions of its genre proudly.

Many romantic comedies utilize deception as a key plot point. However, for every film that incorporates an inciting fib with smarts and heart (from “While You Were Sleeping” to “You’ve Got Mail”), there are others that lack a similar savvy finesse (like “How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days” and “The Wedding Date”). “Players” competes in the latter league. Acting as a dumbed-down, gender-swapped kissing cousin to “Hitch,” it centers on a gal and her pals who know all the right moves to land hookups. Director Trish Sie’s middling and at times mawkish film not only makes us hate the game, but also its players.

"It was never about the plays, it was about being with the people who 'get' you." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a raunchy New York City romantic comedy film called Players, the latest from filmmaker Trish Sie. This is indeed about the "player" culture of super hot hookups and one-night-stands, where a woman helps guys with "plays" until he realizes he wants more than just one-night-stands. Of course, this is the same story they've been telling for decades. New York sportswriter Mack has spent years devising successful hook-up "plays" with her friends, but when she unexpectedly falls for one of her high society targets, she must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to "playing for keeps." What a pitch. Gina Rodriguez stars as Mack, along with Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle, and Tom Ellis. This is the...

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Who’s ready to go back behind bars? In a surprise announcement, Deadline reports that Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner Elgin James is developing a new Prison Break project for Hulu. Written and executive-produced by James through his Sierra Drive studio, the revised version marks a new chapter of the incarceration thriller.
Elgin is keeping details about the new Prison Break project in solitary. However, Deadline says, “it is not expected to involve the characters who were at the center of the original series and its followups on Fox.” The original Prison Break debuted in 2005, following Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) as two brothers hatching a plan to escape Fox River State Penitentiary. With Lincoln heading for Death Row, it’s only a matter of time before push comes to shove, and the brothers must enact their plan or face the consequences of their actions.

Twitter is haunted. At least, it was in 2017, when Buzzfeed artist Adam Ellis’ Twitter thread went viral. The thread chronicled his encounters, in real-time, with the ghost of a little boy named Dear David. Because Hollywood loves IP, the thread was quickly picked up by New Line Cinema (and later Lionsgate), and woven into the feature-length haunt, Dear David. Directed by John McPhail with a screenplay by Mike Van Waes, the film endeavors to transcend its Twitter roots, but struggles to turn bite-sized digital morsels into a compelling feature-length haunting.

I’ve never been especially afraid that Janicza Bravo’s inimitable “Zola” might pave the way for more films based on Twitter threads; in the time since one of history’s biggest losers began to delegitimize the platform just because he’s so bad at using it, not once have I found myself wondering: “But where are we going to get our movies!?”
If anything, I expected BuzzFeed Studios’ “Dear David” — adapted from a viral, months-long thread that a former employee of the internet-famous content mill wrote about the ghost haunting his Queens apartment — to inspire some nostalgia for the days when the website formerly known as Twitter was still a wellspring of new media creativity, and not just a toxic cesspool of hate and misinformation. Alas, this low-rent, no-energy, seen-it-all-before genre wank left me absolutely terrified of returning to an era when micro-blogged cries for help could last for...

Back in 2017, BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis wrote out a ghost story (which he swears is completely true) on Twitter, and that story caught so much attention that there was soon talk of a movie adaptation. The project, titled Dear David, was first set up at New Line Cinema in 2018, then made its way over to Lionsgate. Now Lionsgate is gearing up to give Dear David a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on October 13th – and to promote the release, a clip from the movie has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.
Anna and the Apocalypse‘s John McPhail has directed the film from a screenplay by Mike Van Waes. There are a few things that we wish the lead characters of horror movies knew just as confidently as avid horror watchers: Don’t go down in the basement! Don’t go exploring the source of those strange noises! And, under no circumstances, don’t document the eerie things that might be happening in your apartment while you’re asleep, unless you want to open up a portal for some uncanny pests.
For BuzzFeed comic Adam Ellis (Augustus Prew), the cynical center of John McPhail’s soulless and haphazard genre entry “Dear David,” that last rule seems to mean nothing. In that, when strange, potentially supernatural stuff starts happening around his apartment, he elects to monitor the activity. Even worse, when he isn’t asleep he decides to engage with some very real creeps—that is, the growing number of online trolls who seem to attack him from all Twitter directions.

BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis began a Twitter thread in 2017 that went viral as it chronicled the eerie happenings within his apartment, with sleep paralysis giving glimpses of the specter responsible, a young ghost boy with a misshapen head named David. The movie adaptation of that thread, Dead David, aims to expand the paranormal mystery that haunted Ellis by turning inward, using Ellis and his online habits to craft a supernaturally charged cautionary tale of online bullying.
Comic artist Adam (Augustus Prew) is no stranger to internet trolls working for Buzzfeed, but one day, he hits his limit and fires back. His angry replies draw attention, and Adam soon after finds himself experiencing sleep paralysis and bizarre phenomena in his apartment. As the paranormal encounters increase with malevolence, Adam takes to Twitter to detail the happenings. Adam’s boss (Justin Long) encourages him to play up the haunting online, but...

Lionsgate and BuzzFeed are bringing the creepy viral story Dear David to the big screen this Friday the 13th, with Anna and the Apocalypse director John McPhail at the helm.
Dear David adapts the viral 2017 Twitter thread in which then Buzzfeed cartoonist Adam Ellis chronicled the child haunting his apartment. Mike Van Waes wrote the screenplay, and Augustus Prew stars as the fictionalized version of Ellis.
Director John McPhail spoke with Bloody Disgusting ahead of the film’s release in theaters, On Demand, and Digital on October 13, 2023, where he discussed his horror influences, online trolling, and emphasis on character arcs.
For McPhail, good stories always begin and end with great characters.
“Essentially, I make films for people,” he tells Bloody Disgusting. “I make them for an audience. For me, what I’ve always loved is just following the character’s journey. It doesn’t matter what adventure you take me...

After responding to Internet trolls, a man becomes haunted by the ghost of a dead child named David. ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Exclusive: Ashley Romans (Y: The Last Man) has been cast as a series regular opposite Ben McKenzie, Melissa George, Michelle Ortiz and Augustus Prew in ABC’s medical drama pilot The Hurt Unit. She replaces Bull alumna Jaime Lee Kirchner who had been originally cast in the pilot, written by Matt Lopez and John Glenn and to be directed by Marc Webb.
According to sources, Kirchner exited over creative differences during production. Her scenes will be reshot with Romans. While unfortunate, recastings are relatively common and a part of the pilot process.
The Hurt Unit follows a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses led by Danny (McKenzie), a self-made surgeon, who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.

Watching Nolly will divide a generation: you’ll either be surprised you haven’t heard of her (even if she was ‘a bit before your time’), or even more surprised you’d somehow forgotten she ever existed.
She certainly seems instantly unforgettable, thanks in part to Helena Bonham Carter’s assured depiction of her full-throttle, take-life-by-the-horns character (infamous red dye job included), but also thanks to Nolly writer Russell T Davies’ very obvious affection for the real Noele Gordon.
Davies respectfully litters the series with references to her many underappreciated achievements in the television industry. If you do know Noele Gordon, you’ll most likely know her as a daytime TV stalwart who propped up the naff-but-beloved British soap Crossroads (even if she couldn’t prop up the show’s infamous wobbly scenery) as motel owner Meg for the best part of two decades.
But the reality,...

Soap operas are microcosms of life. Streets and squares, farms and motels; all the triumph and despair of human existence compressed into a few houses, a few lives. It’s no surprise then, that Russell T Davies – on a hot streak afterA Very British Scandal and It’s a Sin – has turned his attention to the Golden Age of the British soap opera. His three-part drama, Nolly, streaming now on Itvx, has a similarly telescopic scale: a portrait of a woman, and a portrait of a nation.
Nolly is the story of Noele Gordon (Helena Bonham Carter), the star and matriarch of Crossroads – the Midlands-based soap opera that ran from the 1960s through to the end of the Eighties. Nolly, as everyone calls her, is a legend: loved by co-stars, adored by the public, tolerated by directors. But a new era is approaching, and executives at Atv (one of the broadcasters...

PBS Masterpiece has boarded Nolly, a British period drama series starring Helena Bonham Carter.
The public broadcaster will air the series, which will debut on UK streaming platform Itvx, in the U.S. although no premiere date has been announced.
Nolly will tell the story of Noele Gordon (Bonham Carter), who played Meg Richardson in hit ITV soap Crossroads before being abruptly axed at the height of the show’s success. With the boss’s words “all good things must come to an end” ringing in her ears, Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for almost 20 years.
The biopic comes from It’s A Sin creator Russell T Davies and is produced by ITV Studios-backed Quay Street Productions.
It also stars Augustus Prew and Mark Gatiss.

New Queer’s Eve.
It’s been a pretty wild December, with us covering off-kilter films like the much-maligned Batman & Robin, the not-as-bad-as-you-think Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings and the Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins-penned murder mystery The Last of Sheila. Now we’re wrapping up the year with a discussion of Carter Smith‘s Into the Dark entry “Midnight Kiss“!
In the film, a group of friends gather at a beautiful desert resort on New Year’s Eve, and play a game called Midnight Kiss, as is their tradition. The purpose of the game is for each of them to find someone with whom to start the New Year. As Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse celebrated the opening day of The Inheritance on Sunday, there was a special guest seated in the audience all day long: Matthew López. And what a day-turned-night it was.
The Tony-winning playwright turned up for an epic day at the Geffen, which presented part one and part two back-to-back with a block party in between.
The day’s schedule kicked off as doors opened at noon for a cocktail hour that preceded the first performance, from 1-4:30 p.m. An outdoor picnic followed from 4:30-6 p.m. featuring boxed lunches, an ice cream truck, a coffee cart and other treats sprinkled about on Le Conte Avenue, a spread that also featured a production-approved cherry tree. Then a musical performance and DJ in the Geffen courtyard from 6-7 p.m. followed by Part 2 and a post-show party...
