Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Last month, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. Now producer Ryan Turek has confirmed to ComicBook.com that The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson is coming back to direct The Black Phone 2.

Horror fans have been blessed with a bold new generation of Scream Queens, from “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega to Mia Goth of “X” and “Pearl,” to “Yellowjackets” stars Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher, not to mention the women of “Fear Street,” Stranger Things” and Mike Flanagan’s deliciously spooky “Haunting of…” Netflix series.
Here’s some of our favorite final girls — and vicious villains — from recent horror films and TV series.

Soon after director Scott Derrickson’s Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (check out our review Here) was released last year, it was revealed that Derrickson and Hill were discussing the possibility of a sequel… Now Variety reports that Universal and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The release date is the only information that has been shared about The Black Phone 2, but a social media post from Derrickson indicates that he is still involved with the project in some capacity. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s going to be directing the sequel, scripting it for another director, or producing it alongside Blumhouse. Speaking of sinister franchises, when a sequel to Derrickson’s film Sinister was made, he wrote the script for Sinister 2...

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

Gothic castles and faraway cabins are classic genre fare, but there’s something to be said for scary movies that tell stories about claustrophobic urban environments and the horrors of being isolated despite being surrounded by densely packed neighbors. Not only are these stories more relatable for big-city folks like myself, but they’re also uniquely positioned to deliver down-to-earth scares with a social twist.
And in honor of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly relocating the action to an LA apartment building, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Apartment Horror movies. After all, there’s nothing scarier than finding yourself trapped in a high rise with nowhere to go but down!
In the interest of keeping the list varied, we’ll be leaving out a few obvious entries like Candyman and Rosemary’s Baby, as I think we can assume that most of our readers have already seen these.

Scientifically, "Sinister" is the scariest movie of all time. The 2012 horror movie sees a has-been crime writer (played by Ethan Hawke) moving his family into a murder house while he investigates the case for a new book. He doesn't tell his wife or kids about the home's grisly history, and he finds a box of Super 8 home movies in his attic that indicate the house's much darker past. Each home movie has unsettling imagery -- with one in particular spiking heart rates higher than normal -- and each is key to the film's overall eerie atmosphere. It's the sort of modern-day chiller that makes the rounds at sleepovers, where kids dare each other to make it all the way to the end credits.

When he was working on The Haunting of Hill House, genre filmmaker extraordinaire Mike Flanagan ambitiously took on helming all 10 episodes himself. It proved to be an extremely taxing venture for Flanagan, so when it came time to begin production on The Haunting of Bly Manor, he set out to not only bring in some other talented directors to collaborate with, but was looking at it as an opportunity to be able to support more voices in the genre space as well.
The director’s pool on Bly Manor is pretty damn impressive, and features the likes of Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin, Axelle Carolyn, Yolanda Ramke, Ben Howling, and E.L. Katz, with Flanagan taking the reins on the first episode.
“When we first started talking about a second season, coming off of Hill House, I was not in great shape,” Flanagan explained. “I lost like 40 pounds in production and I...

But there are some stories which are just as powerful because they unravel another emotion that can be as strong a motivator as love, if not more – guilt. And Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, which released on October 9, is a brilliant exploration of a drama that is driven by several of its characters being haunted by the guilt of their past. The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second instalment after the riveting Haunting of Hill House, though the two series explore different settings and different stories. More than other genres, horror fans have to deal with an inordinate amount of terrible films. The staggering amount of horror that is released, only to fall into the bottomless pit of Netflix is truly astonishing. So, it’s with some trepidation that one might approach their newest original release, “Eli.” Falling squarely into two the well-worn sub-categories of haunted hospitals and children with premonitions, director Ciarán Foy’s film is slightly scary, featuring a number of effective jump scares, but ultimately derivative rehash of other better films, until it gets to its truly go-for-broke ending, which either saves or completely destroys the film (more on that later).

Devil May Care: Foy Falters with Campy Horror Flick
Director Ciarán Foy continues with genre in third narrative feature, Eli, a B-grade horror film which takes pains to mask its parameters for some hysterical third act surprises. Children and religion feature heavily once again in Foy’s latest, which hearkens back to his first (and best) offering to date, 2012’s Ireland/UK co-production, Citadel, in which Aneurin Barnard portrayed an agoraphobic father who teams up with a priest to stave off an invasion of feral children in a high-rise.
Landing him enough attention to serve as director-for-hire on 2015’s studio franchise opportunity Sinister 2 (in which James Ransone returned to fend off the evil spirits terrorizing Shannyn Sossamon with her twin boys), it’s a pleasure to see Foy returning to something a bit less contrived this time around.…...

Arriving exclusively on Netflix this Friday is Ciarán Foy’s Eli, a story centered around a sick little boy (Charlie Shotwell) who suffers from an auto-immune system that makes it impossible for him to exist in the outside world. His parents take him to stay in a remote facility run by Dr. Horn (Lili Taylor), who promises to cure Eli of what ails him. But Eli begins to suspect there’s more going on than the good Doctor Horn is telling him, and it’s up to him to find a way out before it’s too late.
Of course, there’s quite a bit more to Eli than just some medical shenanigans, but that would ruin the surprises that await viewers this Friday. Suffice to say, if you think you’ve seen a movie like Eli before, just think again.

Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling.
Yolanda Ramke was browsing social media when she spotted a tweet from Mike Flanagan, creator/showrunner of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, complimenting her and her co-director Ben Howling on Cargo.
Thrilled, Ramke sent off a grateful response to Flanagan. That prompted her Us agent, CAA’s Matt Martin, who knew a second series was in the works, to get in touch with the co-executive producer, Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy.
In turn that led to a Skype interview for Ramke and Howling with Flanagan and Macy. After a brief wait, the offer came for the duo to co-direct episodes of The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is now shooting in Vancouver.
Flanagan announced the hiring of the Aussies on Twitter along with Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin (A Dark Song) and Axelle Carolyn.

We’ve got an incredibly creepy trailer for you to check out for the Netflix indie-horror Eli. The film is directed by Ciarán Foy and follows a mother and father who take their ailing son with an autoimmune disorder to a home/facility to receive treatment, but things begin to go wrong when supernatural events occur, and evil seems to be lurking throughout the house and its staff.
As a last resort to cure their son’s auto-immune disorder, the Millers move into a sterile manor during his treatments. Eli is tormented by terrifying visions — deemed hallucinations — but something sinister may lurk within these walls.
The film stars Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone), Max Martini (13 Hours), Charlie Shotwell (All the Money in the World), Lili Taylor (Mystic Pizza), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Deneen Tyler (Black and Blue), and Katia Gomez (Get Hard).

It’s October, and that means it’s horror movie season. Netflix is ready to scare your pants off with the streaming platform’s latest original horror movie, “Eli.” Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Ciarán Foy (“Sinister 2”), the film follows Eli (Charlie Shotwell from 2016’s “Captain Fantastic”), an 11-year-old boy with an auto-immune disorder who, sheltered from the dangerous environmental stimuli of the world, is checked into a “clean house” for treatment. But he soon discovers that the house is not just “clean” — it’s haunted. Think “Bubble Boy” meets “The Conjuring.” Similarities to the latter are reinforced by the presence of Lili Taylor (star of “The Conjuring” and the recently canceled Netflix series “Chambers”) in the film’s cast. Kelly Reilly (recently seen in TV’s “Yellowstone”) also stars.

The streaming service told TheWrap it’s keeping character details for Siegel’s role on “Bly Manor” — which is set to launch in 2020 — under wraps for now.
While “The Haunting of Hill House” was an adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic novel of the same name, when Netflix renewed the Mike Flanagan-created series for Season 2 — and turned it into “The Haunting” anthology — back in February, the streaming service revealed that next chapter would be “a new story with all new characters” titled “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” based on Henry James’ 1898 horror novella, “The Turn of the Screw.

Just a thought: Maybe let’s not try to commune with the dead.
In Liam Gavin’s “A Dark Song” — which world premiered at beloved genre fest Fantastic Fest last year — absolutely no one takes that advice, and the results are shocking. The film stars Catherine Walker as Sophia, a grieving mother who will do anything to reconnect with her dead son, who is aided by Joseph (Steve Oram), who promises he can summon the child back to Sophie.

What is it about towering apartment buildings that fascinates filmmakers, especially those working in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy? It’s easy to imagine these eyesores of urban development — especially those with secured entrances and exclusive tenants — harboring sinister secrets inside their walls.
High-Rise, director Ben Wheatley adaptation’s of J.G. Ballard‘s eponymous sci-fi novel, more than fits into this strange subset of films, as it focuses on dystopian class warfare inside a monolithic beast of Brualist architecture. With the film now in theaters (and on VOD), we look at other other films that imagine the incredible, horrifying, or supernatural happenings in and around these deceptively unassuming structures.
Apartment Trilogy (Roman Polanski)
Has any set of films turned the usual drudgeries of apartment living — climbing up your stairs for the umpteenth time, dealing with troubled amenities, and trying your best to acknowledge neighbors’ existence without getting the least bit involved...

Caged and waiting to be eaten. Visited by the dead at nightfall. Asked to climb into the oven to clean it. The characters in The Green Inferno, Sinister 2, and The Visit are faced with horror of many forms, and while their scary situations are vastly different from one another, all of their stories can now be experienced on Blu-ray.
The Green Inferno: Hopeful for change, the student activists travel to the Amazon rainforest to save a tribe threatened by deforestation, only to be captured by the natives and placed on the menu. In The Green Inferno, Eli Roth exposes viewers to a palpable sense of primal fear, realistically placing his young cast of well-meaning characters in a horrifying “what if?” situation made all the more real by the filming location: a village deep in the jungles of Peru.
Although Roth’s unique brand of humor takes precedence over...

Be advised: there are some plot spoilers in the following article and accompanying video. Proceed with caution. It was a scary year at the movies, wasn't it? And gross, too. Very, very gross. The scalping scene in "Bone Tomahawk," to cite just one example, ranks as one of the most horrendous displays of human cruelty and degradation I have ever seen on film. I'm conflicted about that disturbing moment in S. Craig Zahler's very good Western, which also sees the character in question being split in two as he screams in agony. While it doesn't particularly lend itself to satisfied squeals of glee from gorehounds in the way that, say, one of the "Saw" movies would, something feels unnecessary about the way Zahler lingers over the savage act. Conversely, by presenting the moment without frills -- no eerie soundtrack cues, no gratuitous closeups of torn flesh (so as to...
