Classic rock songs often feature women’s names as titles. Notably, The Beatles pulled this trick with several of their classic rock songs. In addition, Kiss released a song with a feminine name as its title that originally had a more traditionally masculine name.
The Beatles | Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer 5. The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’
The Beatles gave us “Michelle,” “Julia,” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” However, “Eleanor Rigby” is their best song with this sort of title. Those cold violins had an immense impact on 1960s popular music, as it paved the way for artists like The Rolling Stones, Linda Ronstadt, and the Bee Gees to start incorporating neoclassical elements into their music.
The lyrics are also great. Over the course of three minutes, fans get a full picture of Eleanor Rigby and her immense loneliness. “Eleanor Rigby” is more like a short story than the average pop song,...

We should probably all embrace the fact that the Justice League will be dominating pop culture conversation for the foreseeable future, given that its first live-action, big screen foray is about to debut in theatres around the world. That being the case, and with superhero movie audiences being legendarily impatient, the cast is already being questioned as to what we might see in Justice League 2 – if and when the sequel is announced.
While being interviewed by the Toronto Sun about the villains they would like to see in the next outing, Ezra Miller opted for the almost predictable answer of the Injustice League. Gal Gadot, on the other hand, gave a more Wonder Woman-centric response, and reaffirmed her desire to fight the Amazon Warrior’s arch-nemesis, Cheetah (who has also featured in Injustice League), on the big screen.

This article contains spoilers for Wonder Woman and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Wonder Woman is raking in cash at the global box office, and its Rotten Tomatoes page is aglow with positive write-ups. Understandably, talk has already turned to a sequel.
Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins are both likely to return for more (Gadot is signed up, Jenkins - as things stand - isn't), and Wonder Woman 2 seems to have joined Warner Bros and DC’s ever-growing list of upcoming flicks.
It’s worth remembering here that Justice League is the next film on the DC timetable; it has a UK release date of November 17th 2017. The Flash and Aquaman are both slated for next year, although it seems that only the latter is actually on-track to...

Last night’s penultimate episode of The Flash‘s third season featured some major shocks and an ending which could change the show forever, but before we reached that point, a massive easter egg was spotted which could be teasing the arrival of a pretty important DC Comics villain to the Arrowverse.
While The Flash and Captain Cold searched A.R.G.U.S. for the power source necessary for the weapon which would trap Savitar in the Speed Force, they passed Grodd’s cell and then another which contained Wonder Woman villain Cheetah, a character yet to make her live-action debut.
There’ve been a number of takes on Cheetah in the comic books. However, the most popular is British archaeologist Barbara Ann Minerva. Introduced in the pages of 1987’s Wonder Woman #7 following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, she plagued Diana Prince for years and still does in her current series.

Call me crazy, but no in continuity Wonder Woman story has really resonated with me since Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang concluded what I would call a definitive run. Believe it or not, I did think Meredith and David Finch’s material had some bright spots and, when it comes to Greg Rucka’s current take, I think it’s good but it doesn’t “wow” me.
Maybe that had to do in part with how this title was structured when it came to publishing. You see, all odd numbered issues – in this case, the ones that comprised The Lies – take place in the present, whereas even numbered ones are set in the past and make up the Year One arc. It was a clever way of balancing the respective workloads of artists Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott,...

57 years ago today, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles. It was the last film based on a fairy tale that the House of Mouse made for over 30 years, until 1989’s The Little Mermaid, since Sleeping Beauty underperformed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs at Disney. The successful release of 101 Dalmatians in 1961 ended up saving Disney Animation. Though Sleeping Beauty wasn’t a hit at its debut, the film’s become a beloved Disney classic, with Aurora in her pink dress (you win, Flora) prominent among the lineup of Disney princesses, and with Maleficent now an iconic animated villain. Maleficent got her own movie starring Angelina Jolie in 2014. Other notable January 29 happenings in pop culture history: • 1845: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven was first published in the New York Evening Mirror. • 1942: BBC Radio first aired “Desert Island Discs.” Still on the air today,...

Taking a trick from Beyonce’s playbook, U2 dropped its 13th studio album, “Songs of Innocence,” today without warning. The Irish band made the announcement at Apple’s event in Cupertino, Calif. The aptly named “Songs of Innocence,” produced by Danger Mouse, with additional production by Ryan Tedder, Paul Epworth, Flood, and Declan Gaffney, is a song cycle that draws on the band members’ past— a time when they first met and everything was possible. It pays tribute to their influences (The Ramones, The Clash, The Beach Boys), first loves, growing up in the shadow of Ira violence, and the fallout of tough economic times. Bono’s vocals sound fresh and invigorated and the production sparkles. It’s a lovely album that is sentimental without ever losing its edge. Below is a first-listen review: my take on each song by only listening to it once as I play the album straight through.

Considering that the teaser trailer for Despicable Me 2 just featured a group of minions singing "Barbara Ann", I kind of expected the first full theatrical trailer to showcase some actual footage from the movie. And while it's entirely possible that these scenes are in the movie, this new trailer just plays like a Halloween-themed short film featuring those lovable minions. It doesn't even have an appearance from Gru (Steve Carell), but I guess we all know by now that the minions are the star of the show. I still have not seen the entirety of the first film, but the movie made $540 million worldwide and a sequel is guaranteed money in the bank.
