Marina Cappi read all the signs: film and series production in Massachusetts was increasing, lawmakers extended the state’s very attractive production credit and there was a desperate need for soundstage space. To commercial real estate veteran Cappi, building a soundstage and studio campus made good business sense.
Marina Studios — the only dedicated soundstage near Boston — opened in 2021 in Quincy, Mass.’ Marina Bay, offering over 26,000 square-feet of space just a 12-minute drive from Logan Intl. Airport. The Marina Studios campus also includes 15,000 square-feet of multi-use production office and a 3-acre backlot. There’s also new housing nearby that offers short-term leases, restaurants, markets and other amenities.
Marina Studios is already booked through 2026, and the fact that Massachusetts made the generous tax credits permanent — a tax credit equal to 25 of spend in Massachusetts, as long as 75 of production costs are spent in the state — has also leveled up Marina’s ambitions:...

Alessandro Nivola on finding Géza Röhrig for To Dust: "Dylan Leiner who is one of the guys who runs Sony Pictures Classics. He knew Géza because they released Son of Saul." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

Demon Hole is set to be completed soon. This film, from director Josh Crook (Salvage), is a horror comedy, set in the woods. Here, a group of characters, under the influence of marijuana, see strange creatures, on sacred Native American land. The film stars Samantha Scaffidi, Austin Ramsey and Paris Campbell. As well, the film's first poster is hosted here. There is a little more to the story. A fracking crew has started drilling on an indigenous burial ground. A demon is released. And, six delinquent teens will face a true horror. This horror requires blood sacrifice and the teens are on this demon's blood list. The Demon Hole poster is a good one. A drill is shown in the background as two characters run from toothy fangs. A bloody skull will be at least one character's final state. Also, the film will be at this year's American Film Market,...

During the last Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (Laliff) director, producer and Nalip member Kimberly Bautista (2012 HBO/Nalip Documentary Filmmaker Award Winner, Lpa 2010) won Best Documentary with Justice For My Sister. The feature documentary deals with domestic violence, murder, and one Guatemalan woman's determination to hold her sister's killer accountable.
The film was presented to a packed house, it received a standing ovation, and was followed by a lively Q&A, where Kimberly was joined on stage by her editor Michael X. Flores and the film's advocacy team, the Justice for my Sister Collective. Attendees included funders Latino Public Broadcasting (Lpb), sponsors National Association of Latino Independent Producers (Nalip), community partners Peace Over Violence, and East Los Angeles Women's Center promotoras (health promoters) - who were sponsored by Supervisor Gloria Molina's Office to attend. Special guests included representatives from the Mexican Consulate, Un Women, and Chime for Change.
Justice for my Sister was unanimously chosen as the winner by the jury, as it shows the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and touched each of the jury members personally.
Affected herself by the issue of gender-based violence and inspired by the fearlessness of her main character Rebeca, Kimberly decided to launch a nationwide violence prevention campaign in Guatemala with the support of an advocacy team. The campaign consists of community screenings, violence prevention and healthy relationships workshops, and a text messaging campaign - launched with Freedom Connect - to connect audiences to services. These initiatives and more are being replicated in Los Angeles, and soon throughout Latin America and target cities in the U.S., with the support of Embassies, Movies That Matter Foundation, Un Women, and others.
This is the third jury prize that Justice For My Sister has won at a festival, the others being: - Movies That Matter Festival, Holland, “Camera Justitia” Jury Prize, March 2013 - Festival Internacional de Cine de los Derechos Humanos de Sucre, Bolivia- "Pukañawi 2013/Ojo Latinoamericano”Jury Prize, July 2013
Other awards for the film: - Inaugural Young Alumni Achievement Award for Commitment to Promoting International Domestic Violence Prevention Through Use of Media, Pitzer College, 2013 - Winner of the 2012 HBO/Nalip Documentary Filmmaker Award - 2012 Cornelian Award “Alumna of the Year” from Mayfield Senior School - First Place Winner, Cuban Hat Transmedia Pitch, Sunny Side of the Doc, France, 2012

Yet another lawsuit has been filed against a production company in Hollywood as interns continue to rise up and demand compensation for unpaid work. In a federal wage-and-hour suit filed against Crook Brothers Productions, Jeff and Josh Crook, Larry Schwarz Media Group, as well Larry Schwarz and His Band, plaintiff Kevin Hicks says he worked 10-to-16 hours a day, in excess of 40 hours a week, as an intern on Crook's "Alien Dawn," a series that premiered on Nickelodeon's Nicktoons earlier this year, but has not aired since April. There aren’t a whole lot of films being made in the Dominican Republic and most of them are usually shown at international or Latino film festivals. But here’s a Dominican feature film that is getting a limited theatrical release – La Soga (The Rope), directed by Josh Crook. The film, which stars, and was written and produced by Manny Perez, is about a hit man with a conscience who’s after the man who killed his father.
If Perez’s name isn’t familiar, the face should be, since he’s done a ton of movie and TV work since the early 90’s, and this isn’t his first time behind the camera either. He also wrote, produced, as well as starred in the 2002 indie film, Washington Heights.
La Soga looks like a violent, tense thriller, and it’s gotten some good reviews, such as in the N.Y.

A film loaded with interest that somehow fails to be interesting, La Soga is inspired by true events and not much else. A crime drama set in a satellite village orbiting Santiago, Dominican Republic, and occasionally New York City, it tells the story of Luisito (Manny Perez, who also wrote the film), an assassin-for-hire working for the local police and the American government to cleanse drug-dealing U.S. deportees from the streets. Social, moral, and personal themes abound, but are mostly left wandering shoeless among the extras, as Perez and American director Josh Crook get caught up in playing gangster film, Dominican-style.

"La Soga" is on track to be the best movie about a vegetarian butcher out this year. The title figure, played by screenwriter Manny Perez, may have learned the trade of butchery from his dad, but seems so disgusted by the stench and blood on the killing room that he refuses to eat meat. Who knew he could be a poster-boy for PETA? The Dominican Republic, where Josh Crook filmed the movie, appears to have no Humane Society rules on killing animals. A 150 pound porky is "euthanized" with a knife to its heart (rather than via cutting its throat since that would release too much blood, which is of value for some reason), and this looks done in real time. A couple of cock fights ensue, and if they're not real, more power to the special effects guys.

While looking through IMDb, I found that director Josh Crook actually wrote Rise of the Dead but the script is penned by Manny Perez and I'm eager to see this as it's set in both the Dominican Republic and Washington Heights (upper tip of Manhattan) where I lived for a few months.
Here's the synopsis off the facebook page:
"La Soga" is an edgy, action-drama, combining the gritty reality of movies like "City of God" and "Amores Perros." It is the personal journey of a brave man who risks everything to find justice, a visceral and gripping story of redemption that lays bare brutality and corruption.

Curioser and Curioser.. First off, the world premier of road trip comedy Bunny & The Bull which we reported on a Long time ago. Next is Gaspar Noé's Cannes premierer Enter the Void which didn't fare too well.. I'm betting this is a new edit. The winner of the grand jury prize at Cannes, Un Prophete will have a special screening. Hugo Weaving's gritty Aussie thriller Last Ride (we'll have a review up soon, got a screener!) is also playing along with another flick from down under we've been clocking, Beautiful Kate. Let's not forget the world premier of Yoichi Sai's ninja flick Kamui.. plus so many more!
