In an intriguing move, yet retro, move for Disney on the 2024 theatrical release calendar which is starving for product, three Pixar movies –2020’s Soul, 2021’s Luca and 2022’s Turning Red –which were sidelined on Disney+ during the pandemic, are getting special engagement theatrical runs. We hear all three will receive moderate to wide theatrical runs. The titles will remain in play on Disney+ during their new theatrical window.
The Oscar winning animated movie Soul will open on Jan. 12, while Turning Red will play on Feb. 9, followed by Luca on March 22. Tickets go on sale Jan. 2. All three will precede Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 which opens on June 14.
The press release reads that the studio invites “moviegoers to experience three Pixar films the way they were meant to be seen”. Disney’s re-release of older animated titles was a huge cash cow business that they practiced for decades even into the DVD era.

Pixar’s Soul, Luca and Turning Red — which bypassed the big screen and went straight to Disney+ because of the pandemic — will play in theaters for the first time, Disney announced Wednesday.
Soul, Pete Docter’s Oscar-winning 2020 animated film about a middle-school band teacher who is transported to the “Great Before,” will be released in cinemas on Jan. 12. Turning Red, Domee Shi’s 2022 Oscar-nominated movie about a teen who turns into a red panda, debuts Feb. 9, followed by Enrico Casarosa’s Oscar-nominated sea monster story Luca on March 22.
Luca will be paired with Pixar’s classic short For the Birds (2000), which won an Oscar for best animated short. Soul will be preceded by Pixar’s Oscar-nominated 2020 SparkShort Burrow; and Turning Red, with Academy-Award-nominated 2019 SparkShort Kitbull.
Pixar’s first post-pandemic theatrical release was Lightyear in 2022, followed by last spring’s Elemental.

Pete Docter is no stranger to awards ceremonies.
He’s the only filmmaker to have won the Best Animated Feature Oscar three times (most recently for the 2020 film “Soul”) and Docter’s “Up” was only the second animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Add to that a half-dozen Annie Awards and a BAFTA trophy.
This year, Docter will be honored with the Winsor McKay Award at this year’s Annies, presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, Asifa-Hollywood. Previous Winsor McKay honorees, named for the legendary animator behind Gertie the Dinosaur, include Eyvind Earle, Hayao Miyazaki, Ray Harryahusen, Tim Burton and Don Bluth. Docter will be honored alongside Canadian animator Evelyn Lambart (posthumously) and Craig McCracken, creator (most recently) of Netflix’s “Kid Cosmic.”

There's something weirdly nostalgic about the titular character of "Wednesday." Overly independent, confident, and unapologetically dark, Jenna Ortega's version of the character is more than just an older take on Christina Ricci's surly, '90s-era Wednesday Addams. She's the embodiment of who an awful lot of moody teenage girls want to be.
Watching Ortega sleuth around Nevermore is almost freeing — it's fun to live vicariously through fantastical characters, especially when they're such uncanny representations of who you wanted to be — but it's also easy to feel bad for Ortega. After all, she had massive shoes to fill. It's enough to make anyone feel nervous.
Fortunately, the actor had an incredibly positive experience while playing "Wednesday." In fact, in an interview with Netflix's Tudum, Ortega even revealed that the role was much more liberating than her previous work.

On the cusp of releasing “Lightyear” in theaters this summer, Pixar Animation Studios is pulling back the curtain on another new film coming from the studio in 2023: “Elemental.”
This new original film hails from “The Good Dinosaur” filmmaker Peter Sohn, who directs the story of an unlikely pair – Ember and Wade – living in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. A mismatched buddy story, the film follows a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy who “are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.”
The film was inspired by Sohn’s own childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director in a statement. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures,...

Despite minor strides towards LGBTQ representation in big budget studio movies (a recent study from GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index noted that there was an increase in the percentage of films with Lbgtq characters in 2020), recent events prove just how empty those gestures are on a day-to-day basis. Over the last few weeks, one of Hollywood’s biggest money-makers — The Walt Disney Company and its many related entities — has had to face backlash from angry shareholders, employees, and fans over its inaction in regards to Florida’s planned “Don’t Say Gay” bill; walkouts by LGBTQ employees and allies in protest of said draconian bill; and the publication of a letter from Pixar employees that revealed that the studio already has its own “Don’t Say Gay” policy behind closed doors.

The significance of Pixar’s Oscar-nominated “Luca” has become more apparent with this month’s release of “Turning Red,” another film featuring personal stories of tween friendship, fantastical transformations, and bold 2D-inspired aesthetics. Additionally, recent revelations show that Disney’s suppression of gay content at the studio might’ve had a chilling impact on “Luca.” This came about as a result of the backlash to Disney’s support of Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which helped facilitate the restoration of a previously cut same-sex kiss in the upcoming “Lightyear.”
To be sure, director Enrico Casarosa’s coming-of-age story — about two male sea monsters and their secret friendship as humans in a coastal Italian town — ushered in a more pronounced sea change at Pixar under the leadership of Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter (“Soul”). “Luca” not only offered a quirky brand of storytelling, drawn from autobiographical experience, but...

Disney has been at the center of a PR firestorm ever since the Florida state legislature passed a bill that banned the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms in public schools. The legislation’s detractors, who dubbed it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, quickly called on Disney to stop funding politicians who support the bill. While it is a fairly standard practice for corporations to fund politicians in both parties in states where they do business, Disney eventually backed down and pledged to stop supporting state legislators who voted for the bill.
However, the process has placed scrutiny on Disney’s relationship with the larger LGBTQ community. While Disney has recently incorporated extremely subtle references to homosexuality in some of its films, many critics feel the company has not done nearly enough to make their movies inclusive.

On March 9, LGBTQ employees and allies at Pixar Animation Studios sent a joint statement to Walt Disney Company leadership claiming that Disney executives had actively censored “overtly gay affection” in its feature films. The stunning allegation — made as part of a larger protest over the company’s lack of public response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill — did not include which Pixar films had weathered the censorship, nor which specific creative decisions were cut or altered.
But in at least one case, the statement appears to have made a significant difference.
According to a source close to the production, Pixar’s next feature film, “Lightyear” — starring Chris Evans as the putative real-life inspiration for the “Toy Story” character Buzz Lightyear — does feature a significant female character, Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba), who is in a meaningful relationship with another woman. While the fact of that relationship was never in question at the studio,...

Several of this year’s biggest animated films wanted to take bold stylistic risks that would set them apart from what audiences had come to expect from modern CG animation. On their quest to take the next leap forward, they turned to a style known for its warmth and imperfection — 2D animation.
“The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Luca,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Flee” — all nommed for the animated feature Oscar — found something they needed for their stories in 2D. Whether the style matched the imperfection of the characters themselves, added warmth or established a different look for a specific sequence, it became a crucial inspiration.
In “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” the filmmakers fell in love with concept art created by Lindsey Olivares, production/character designer, and decided they wanted a hand drawn, slightly off-kilter look for the movie. They needed to establish a new style that brought...

Gold Derby’s experts currently list the Pixar film “Luca” in fourth place in their Best Animated Feature odds. Twenty experts predict Disney’s “Encanto” will win, while one forecasts Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and one chooses Neon’s “Flee.” The only film listed behind “Luca” at the moment is Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
But I would suggest “Luca” should get more attention and consideration in the category because it’s a marvelously inventive tale of friendship, love, the need for change, and finding your own path. Telling the story of a half-human, half-sea monster who experiences an unforgettable seaside summer on the Italian Riviera, “Luca” marks the feature directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa, director of the Oscar-nominated 2011 Pixar short, “La Luna.” The original story was penned by Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones.

Updated for March 15: The race has tightened with “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” winning best feature at the 49th annual Annie Awards on March 12. In fact, “The Mitchells” dominated with eight prizes, while “Encanto” earned three for character animation, music, and storyboarding. However, despite the impressive outpouring of support for “The Mitchells” by the animation community, “Encanto” has garnered too much adulation and buzz to be denied the Oscar this late in the season.
Updated for February 8: The Oscar nominations are out and Disney dominated with “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and Pixar’s “Luca.” This marks the first time that Disney has had two in contention since 2016 and the first time it’s had three since 2012. The other two slots were taken by “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Netflix/Sony), and the acclaimed documentary “Flee” (Neon/Participant), which also scored historic noms in the doc and international categories.

Imagine standing by yourself in a room and having a conversation that needs to sound like it’s taking place on a bumpy bicycle ride. Or in the midst of a heavy lift, or during an epic battle. Imagine this all because unlike performing in a live-action film with other actors, props and thoroughly designed and decorated sets or locations, voicing an animated character means not just visualizing it, but convincingly vocalizing it.
Animated films take a notoriously long amount of time so actors return to the recording booth, sometimes over a period of years, as scripts evolve. In between sessions, great chunks of the movie may have been rewritten, but the actors need to jump back into character as though they never left.
“Encanto” director Byron Howard remembers working with Stephanie Beatriz (who plays Mirabel) over a period of years and at least 15 recording sessions for the film’s dialogue alone.

This morning, nominees in the Best Animated Feature Oscar got some very good news. And they responded, well, animatedly. TheWrap got on the phone to congratulate the filmmaking teams from “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and to hear about what this magical morning was like for them. As “Luca” director Enrico Casarosa said, “It’s so hard to make these movies, especially through the pandemic, so I think everyone in the 2021 batch of movies should be so proud.” Yes they should.

Luca was nominated today for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category. The film is one of three Disney features nominated this year, but Luca is the only Pixar movie.
Speaking with Deadline after their nomination was announced, director Enrico Casarosa and producer Andrea Warren shared why they believe Luca was nominated.
While the story of Luca is deeply rooted in Casarosa’s childhood, the theme of friendship was universal for the everyone working on the film. “I think that we all related to those friends that make that difference in your life,” Warren said. “For me, it was a friend where you just connect over things and you laugh at each other’s jokes and it’s that beginning of growing up and building confidence and how meaningful that is to all of us.”

With its unparalleled mixture of dazzling visuals and literate screenplays, Pixar Animation Studio remains the gold standard in feature film animation. Critics have raved and audiences have flocked to most of the 24 feature films produced by the studio since 1995. With such adulation, awards attention has understandably followed, and Pixar’s success in garnering industry honors is unrivaled by most contemporary animation studios. From the studio’s 24 features, Pixar films have been nominated for 53 Academy Awards, winning 18 Oscars along the way. What may be most impressive, however, is Pixar’s success in the category of Best Animated Feature. In the 20 years since the category was first introduced, 11 Pixar films have won that coveted award. Hoping to make it number 12 this year is Pixar’s latest entry, “Luca.”

Every year the same question is asked about the Best Animated Feature category: can anyone beat Disney? Walt Disney Studios, along with subsidiary Pixar, has won 14 Oscars in the Best Animated Feature category since the category began two decades ago, followed in a distant second by DreamWorks Animation’s two wins. 26 animated features are eligible to be nominated this year, and with only five slots, who will make the final cut?
Walt Disney Studios is coming on strong again with their competitors this year, including Pixar’s Luca. There were few movies released last year that were easier to fall in love with than Pixar’s “Luca,” the gentle coming-of-age story that was released on Disney+. It’s the story of young Luca (Jacob Tremblay), a sea monster who discovers that when he goes on land he undergoes “the change,” and turns into a human. He befriends fellow sea monster Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer) and together they spend an unforgettable summer in a nearby seaside town eating gelato, endearing themselves to a human family, and learning to love who they are – every monster-y bit.
It’s a story that was based in part on director Enrico Casarosa’s experience growing up on the Italian coast and his relationship with his more freewheeling best friend (also named Alberto). Upon its release, however, that specific basis for the story had far-reaching implications. “Luca” resonated with many marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community,...

Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” the studio’s first Southeast Asian action-adventure, led Asifa-Hollywood’s 49th Annie Awards with 10 nominations, including best animated feature. Disney’s Colombian-set musical “Encanto,” followed with nine nods, while Pixar’s Italian-set “Luca” tied for eight with Sony Animation/Netflix’s innovative, 2D-inspired “The Mitchells vs. The Machines.” This year’s ceremony is scheduled to return live on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Netflix’s investment in animation has paid off in a big way, as the streamer picked up a whopping 52 nominations at the 49th Annie Awards. Following behind is Disney, which received 29 bids between its film and TV projects.

Netflix picked up nine nominations for “Arcane,” its series based on Riot Games’ online multiplayer game “League of Legends.” The hit film from Sony Pictures Animation “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” earned eight nods, and Netflix’s own limited series “Maya and the Three,” directed by Jorge Gutierrez, has seven.
While Disney lagged behind Netflix for total nominations, the studio’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” led all content with 10 nominations, followed by its studio sibling “Encanto,” which picked up nine.

Composer Dan Romer studied Italian music extensively to prepare for “Luca,” the new Italy-set film from Pixar. Enrico Casarosa, the film’s director, gave him playlists of Italian film scores and songs, which the composer then listened to over and over again to get the style ingrained in his head. While Casarosa wanted the film to reflect his own childhood growing up in Italy, he also wanted Romer to bring his own experience to the score. “He said, ‘I want a Dan Romer score to this film, but I want it to feel like an Italian version of it,'” recalls the composer in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. For Luca, director Enrico Casarosa wanted to show how friendships impact children in most positive ways. Based on his own memories of meeting his childhood best friend, Luca is about how a real connection can change a lonely child’s life.
Luca tells the story of a young sea monster, named Luca, who has been living a sheltered life under the water. A chance encounter with Alberto, another young sea monster who lives by himself on the land, leads Luca to discover his ability to take human form while outside of the water. The boys become fast friends and experience a life-changing summer in the town of Portorosso. Growing up in Genoa, Italy, Casarosa used the Italian Riviera as an inspiration for the setting, as an Italian fishing community with folklore of sea monsters.

Pixar’s latest film “Luca” stemmed from director Enrico Casarosa‘s own experiences growing up in Italy. Like Luca in his friendship with fellow sea monster-turned-human Alberto, Casarosa formed a close friendship with a boy — also named Alberto — who helped expand his world. The director took those childhood memories and formed a story about feeling different, to which many viewers have been able to relate. “There was something about the shame we feel when we’re growing up,” says Casarosa in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “Every day we change, every day we feel like monsters, there’s transformations in us.” Watch the full video chat above.

Disney’s “Luca” is the first Hollywood picture to get a release in China in weeks, but its opening figures didn’t make that big of a splash — at least, not close to enough to douse the continued reign of Donnie Yen action film “Raging Fire.”
The animation directed and co-written by Enrico Casarosa swam to a $5.1 million China opening weekend, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway. That was enough to net it second at the sluggish box office this which in which only four films grossed more than $1 million, but less than other comparable Hollywood animations in the past.
Earlier this year in March, for instance, Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” opened third with $8.4 million. Disney/Pixar’s sea monster story Luca has been granted an August 20 release date in China, signaling that the end of the giant market’s latest unofficial blackout period may be afoot. While Luca will take a prime slot amid a series of local holdovers and is the first Hollywood studio title to release since June, its date also comes at a time when about 30% of cinemas are closed in the market due to a Covid surge, and as box office overall has been muted there. Last week, movie theaters reset capacity limits to 75% in low-risk areas, and those in medium- and high-risk areas were closed. Presumed local blockbuster The Battle At Lake Changjin subsequently postponed its August 12 release.
