In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

The Bachelor producers were faced with a tough question about the franchise’s history of issues surrounding race during an ABC panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
“Why does it seem like The Bachelor has such a hard time dealing with racial issues? And have you learned anything from these past scandals that have led to the departure of Chris Harrison?” Eric Deggans, a TV critics and media analyst from NPR, asked executive producers Bennett Graebner, Jason Erlich and Claire Freeland.
Freeland, who joined the franchise from The Bachelor Canada last year, took on the task of answering.
“I mean, I can speak to where we are now. Our goal is to represent the fabric of the country, not just with respect to diversity and ethnicity, but also ability, body types… I think so far we are putting our money where our mouth is,” Freeland said.

After years of controversies as ratings steadily declined, is 2023 the year The Bachelor franchise found redemption?
The prospect feels greater than ever following the outsized success of The Golden Bachelor, ABC’s ingenious senior-focused spin-off that, in its first season, saw 72-year-old Gerry Turner seize a second chance at love.
Audiences have clearly responded to this breath of fresh air, with over 9M tuning in for The Golden Bachelor finale after seven days of multi-platform viewing, in the franchise’s best audience in almost four years. This comes following an entire season of success for the show, which has repeatedly set audience records since it debuted, with the premiere episode recently becoming ABC‘s most-watched episode of an unscripted series ever on Hulu.
The network has already announced plans to further cash in on the success of Golden by televising Turner’s wedding, a move ABC hasn’t opted for in years.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In 1974, director Tobe Hooper brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An independent production, shot in the heat of a Texas summer, that introduced us to a chainsaw-wielding cannibal called Leatherface. And his twisted family. It was a box office hit. And quickly became one of the most popular and respected horror films of all time. So, of course, there was eventually a remake. Produced by one of the biggest, flashiest filmmakers in the industry. Directed by a music video director in his feature debut. Starring an actress from a family friendly TV show. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. But when the remake was released in 2003, it was another success story.

It’s 6:34 a.m., and the sun is rising as Gerry Turner hands out his final rose of the night. His bedtime came and went long ago. Giddy producers are watching him from a control room, 11 hours into an overnight shoot that’s not done yet.
Turner isn’t exactly a night owl. Typically at this time, the 72-year-old would just be waking up to fry some bacon and eggs. His day might then include a jog around the lake, or perhaps a game of pickleball.
But on a summer night at a mansion in the hills above Malibu, Calif., Turner has been speed-dating 22 women who’d arrived in limousines to meet him. His teenage granddaughters had helped him choose the perfect tuxedo, so he would look his best. After all, their grandpa was about to make his debut on “The Golden Bachelor,” the first-ever senior citizen dating show,...

“The Bachelorette” launched its 20th season Monday night, marking the first season to air without franchise creator Mike Fleiss on board — except Fleiss’ name still appeared when the credits rolled.
During the ending credits at the conclusion of the episode, the very last name to appear on-screen was Fleiss’ accompanied by the words “created by.”
Unlike past seasons, Fleiss was not credited as an “executive producer” and his production company, Next Entertainment, was not listed. In former seasons, Fleiss’ name appeared first on the credits, instead of last.
A source tells Variety that the “created by” credit is contractual because Fleiss is still the creator of “The Bachelor” franchise, regardless of his departure.
Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.

When “The Bachelorette” returns on Monday night with its milestone 20th season, the franchise will continue to make history with leading lady Charity Lawson.
Lawson is the fourth Black woman on the long-running dating series, following Rachel Lindsay (who starred in Season 13 in 2017), Tayshia Adams and Michelle Young. Over the years, “The Bachelor” has faced criticism for its lack of diversity but has pledged to increase its efforts, which have been seen on-screen in recent seasons.
As the star of a primetime network show whose love story will be broadcast to millions, Lawson doesn’t take her role lightly.
“I found myself really advocating a lot for my needs or my concerns as a Bachelorette,” Lawson tells Variety. “Being [a] woman of color, but the second monoracial Black woman, to be in this role was huge. They are making strides slowly but surely.”

ABC announced Tuesday that both series will be returning to the network for another installment. This marks Season 28 for The Bachelor and Season 9 for Bachelor in Paradise.

His last season of the flagship show concluded a week prior with the engagement of Zach Shallcross and Kaity Biggar.
Another Season 27 contestant, Charity Lawson, will be making her debut as the new Bachelorette on June 26.

The Bachelor has been on the air for years, garnering a massive fan base. However, not everyone is a fan of the ABC reality series, including talk show host Kelly Ripa. The Live with Kelly and Ryan co-star has been a vocal critic of the two-decade-old franchise, even though it airs on the same network as her show.
In a recent interview, Ripa shared her thoughts on The Bachelor, which she believes can hurt young women early on in their careers. According to the talk show host, contestants on the reality series may be “unhirable” following their appearance on the show.

Chris Harrison didn’t hold back about how he views The Bachelor creator and former executive producer Mike Fleiss in the latest episode of his podcast.
The April 9 episode of The Most Dramatic Podcast Ever featured a conversation with former The Real Housewives of Orange County star Meghan King. Toward the end of the episode, she asked Harrison if he believed there to be any narcissists within the Bachelor franchise.
“The creator of the show was — severely,” he replied. “One of the toughest things about narcissism is you will never, I don’t want to say never, but very rarely, will that person ever recognize that about themselves.”
He continued, “I was talking to one therapist about narcissism and she said, ‘I’m just warning you that next to a homicidal maniac, narcissism is the toughest thing to treat.’ That to have someone self-realize and actually fix that is next to impossible.

Earlier this week, Bachelor Nation was rocked to the core when it was revealed that Mike Fleiss, the creator, was bowing out after 21 years.
At the time, Fleiss released a statement in which he thanked Warner Bros. Television and ABC.
"They've found the perfect creative team for me to entrust The Bachelor franchise and keep this lightening in a bottle bold and moving forward," he said.
"Let the journey continue."
Days later, new details have emerged about what reportedly went on behind the scenes of the popular franchise.
Variety reports that Fleiss' sudden exit came after an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination.
According to the report, the investigation included accounts of producers on the show about Fleiss pushing back on bringing diversity to the franchise.
Unnamed staffers also opened up about "bullying" tactics he would use.

Mike Fleiss, the creator/executive producer of The Bachelor, announced he was departing the ABC reality franchise after over 20 years earlier this week, but it appears there is more to the story. According to Deadline, Fleiss’ exit from the series came after a workplace misconduct investigation, which looked into claims of alleged racist behavior as well as verbal and emotional abuse against the long-time producer. It is said that Fleiss was not formally fired, but after a conversation with Warner Bros. TV about the investigation results, he chose to leave. Variety adds that the investigation was conducted by an outside party over the past few months, and those spoken to included other current and past staffers, many of whom were prominent producers within the franchise. The complaints against Fleiss included “bullying” behavior, as well as a refusal to increase diversity on the show. A source familiar with the investigation who spoke to Variety stated,...

Two days after news broke that The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss was exiting the franchise that premiered more than two decades ago, he has responded to a report that his departure followed an investigation into racial discrimination, with Fleiss acknowledging that he could have done more to engender diversity.

The drama unfolding in the Mike Fleiss universe has enveloped Disney, which was in discussions with the creator of The Bachelor over a producing deal before the investigation over workplace misconduct allegations surfaced.
Deadline understands that Walt Disney Television Alternative was in talks with Fleiss over a deal, described by sources as a first-look or development arrangement.
However, sometime after Warner Bros. TV began the investigation, Deadline understands, the talks ended and Fleiss opted to leave Warner Bros. TV and the franchise. This has been taking place over the last few months.
Fleiss, whose deal with Warner Bros. TV ended in 2022, was expected to launch a new company to house his new projects.
Fleiss, who is repped by CAA, had been in talks with an exec that he had previously worked with in The Bachelor capacity to run his production company. That exec had separately been in negotiations with Disney over his own deal.

Perhaps its time for Executive Producer Mike Fleiss to employ a full-time forensic anthropologist. Ethan Kang breaks stereotypes. Pic credit: @ethankang1/Instagram
Over the years, there have been numerous stereotypes about the Bachelor franchise as a whole, including the lack of diversity in the shows.
As the only Asian contestant on this past season of The Bachelorette with Rachel Recchia and Gabby Windey, Ethan has spoken out.
Ethan has talked about his Korean-American heritage and how he was the only Asian-American on the show this season.
While Ethan is hopeful that there will be more Asian representation in the future of the show, for now, he has taken it upon himself to break the stereotype.
Ethan was offered Rachel Recchia’s rose when she and Gabby broke into their own groups, and he continued to make the cut as the rose ceremonies happened.

Logan Palmer’s exit from The Bachelorette has people talking. Pic credit: ABC
Logan Palmer made some waves a couple of weeks ago when he wanted to switch sides from Rachel Recchia’s group of men to Gabby Windey’s.
As Logan talked to Gabby about making the move, she allowed him to stay with her group on the show because of her initial connection with him.
However, shortly after switching to Team Gabby, Logan suddenly had to leave the show after talking with host Jesse Palmer.
According to what Jesse revealed to Gabby, Logan had to leave immediately due to having Covid-19.
But viewers then watched as he told Gabby’s other guys that Logan had to leave the show due to a situation.
Now Bachelor Nation fans are speculating and throwing out their thoughts and opinions on whether Logan really left due to having Covid-19 or because of something else.

As the Bachelor franchise continues to air, production has their hands full coming up with new date ideas. In this season of The Bachelorette, fans have seen more unique date ideas than ever before.
In this past episode, the production team and creator Mike Fleiss went the extra mile and provided Bachelor Nation with a more risqué group date than has been done in the past.
When Gabby Windey took her remaining men, Jason Alabaster, Johnny DePhillipo, Erich Schwer, Logan Palmer, and Spencer Swies, to the red light district in Amsterdam, things got real.
During the group date, Gabby’s guys had to come up with safe words in case they didn’t want to answer the intimate question that was asked by Gabby or the woman in charge.

Fans love Mike Johnson. Pic credit: @mike_johnson/Instagram
Mike Johnson, with his bright, big smile and crinkling eyes, captured the hearts of all of Bachelor Nation when he was on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette.
His genuine, sincere, and mature personality also won over the heart of Hannah as she had a strong connection with him until he left in Week 7 of the show.
As Mike continued to be a fan favorite of the franchise, he went on Season 6 of Bachelor in Paradise, and although he was there for a while, he left without finding love.
Mike continues to be involved with Bachelor Nation, though, as he co-hosts a podcast with fellow alum and husband to former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay, Bryan Abasolo.
As a social media influencer, Mike continues to gain fame and followers, and his fans can’t seem to get enough of him.

Nate Mitchell is under fire again. Pic credit: @nate_mitchell12/Instagram
Nate Mitchell, a current contestant on The Bachelorette, has been under fire recently for allegations made against him.
Bachelor Nation fell in love with Nate from the very first episode because he seemed so genuine and talked to Gabby about the love he had for his daughter.
However, in the past week, two women have come out with claims against Nate and their relationships with him.
One woman was apparently dating Nate for over a year and a half, and she stated that Nate had never once mentioned to her that he had a daughter. In fact, she claimed she found out when Nate told Gabby on the show.
Another woman said she and Nate were also in a relationship during the time of other relationship which meant that they overlapped and he was dating two women at the same time.

In a new interview, Matt James explains that his memoir isn’t meant to be a tell-all about the messiness of his experience as ABC’s The Bachelor.
“There will be another Bachelor, and there will probably be another Black Bachelor, and there will be another tell-all book,” James, who was the first Black Bachelor of the franchise, told the Los Angeles Times. “I wasn’t interested in that. If that’s what interests fans, and that outweighs the personal things I want to share, then my book isn’t for them.”
His memoir First Impressions: Off-Screen Conversations With a Bachelor on Race, Family, and Forgiveness, according to the Lat, doesn’t delve into the two scandals that landed his season in a firestorm: He doesn’t go into the aftermath of when his top pick on the 2020 season (and current girlfriend), Rachael Kirkconnell,...

The network made the renewals as part of a slew of unscripted news including new specials and game shows.
Courtroom comedy Judge Steve Harvey premiered strongly in January with a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.92 million viewers. The series has remained steady with a 0.4 demo rating with its latest episodes.
In the series, Harvey takes on a variety of conflicts and characters in his courtroom – from small claims to big disputes and everything in between. Harvey plays by his own rules, basing his courtroom on his own life experiences and some good old common sense.
