A version of this response appeared on the Black Rock Coalition’s website.
When Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner made offensive comments in The New York Times about women and Black artists, the Black Rock Coalition, which has battled stereotypes and musical categorizations about what rock is “supposed to be” since 1985, felt obligated to speak out and condemn his misogynistic and racist statements. While we were among many organizations and individuals to call out Wenner, he also had a number of supporters, citing his contributions to popular culture and to the world of music journalism.

Neal Francis’s 2021 full-length In Plain Sight was a revelatory blast of soul, R&b, and off-the-rails piano jams, including the six-minute exploration “Sentimental Garbage” — the working title of In Plain Sight. Francis returns to that phrase for his new EP, a seven-song collection of odds and ends that he describes as “bittersweet scraps.”
“Sentimental Garbage was the working title of our last LP,” Francis says, “which includes the track of the same name. We ended up calling that record In Plain Sight while removing the title track from the sequence.

Daptone Records has shared Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings’ sly interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” which will be included on an upcoming compilation, Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In), out October 23rd.
The new set features five never-before-heard covers and a handful of others that were previously released in other formats. The covers include a cross-section of faithful recreations and others — like this take on “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” — that are practically new tracks.

You have to play the long game, if you want to survive as a writer. The publication of High Fidelity, in 1995, was just the first step in an ambitious 25-year plan: a successful American edition, even though I set the book in London (check); a much-loved Hollywood movie (check); and then a gender-flipped TV series starring a woman who was six years old when the book was published, but whose talent and star power were obvious even then (check). It is very satisfying when these things pay off.

We have all heard of writer’s block that prevents authors from moving forward with their literary efforts. However, a musician who takes a sabbatical will leave fans wondering if they have run out of their creativity or are pursuing other talents. Mandy Moore is going on tour for the first time in a decade, but she is not the only musician to take such a long break. Others like Linda Perhacs, Shuggie Otis, and Strawberry Alarm Clock break the record with their 43-year-long hiatus. Therefore although the ten years have enabled Mandy to further her acting career, Mandy has not

Maksim Chmerkovskiy, 37, and wife Peta Murgatroyd, 31, dined at Craig’s in West Hollywood with his brother Val Chmerkovskiy, 31, and girlfriend Jenna Johnson, 23.
The two couples were snapped walking outside the restaurant and stopped for paparazzi to take a smiling group photo. With vinyl being a hot music commodity and back in vogue, it would seem inevitable that one of the music giants of the vinyl era would get remastered and re-released. Frank Zappa remains one of the those musical geniuses where his impact was missed by a deservedly larger fanbase while he roamed planet Earth. With a must-see documentary -- Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words (Sony Pictures Classic) -- currently in theaters and on demand, hopefully some of his genius will be discovered by a new generation of fans. Certainly the above-titled masterpiece Hot Rats, reissued by Zappa Records in August on 180gram vinyl cut directly from the original analog master tapes by Bernie Grundman, remains one of his cornerstone releases in his immense and musically varied catalog.

Yes, "Dallas Buyers Club" is, reductively speaking, an "AIDS drama," but we've come a long way since Bruce Springsteen made us weep with "Streets of Philadelphia." The soundtrack for the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starrer is just as energetic and vivacious as his lead character Ron Woodroof, and details of the tunes you'll be hearing along the way (and some inspired by the movie) have now arrived. The sixteen-track disc doesn't waste a moment, bringing along Canadian sisters Tegan and Sara, Jared Leto's own band 30 Seconds To Mars, knobtwiddler Awolnation, roots dudes My Morning Jacket and more. If a classic vibe is more your style, Shuggie Otis kicks this off with some soul, while T. Rex brings up the rear with some rock 'n' roll. And put all together, it's the kind of playlist collection you generally don't see in awards season movies, which tend lean more heavily on traditional scores.

Amidst several live dates this summer to support his new material, Otis stopped by The Blockley in Philadelphia, Penn. in early August to perform for a crowd of devoted fans. Photographer Doug Seymour spent the day with Otis, documenting candid moments backstage, soundcheck and the performance itself. View Seymour’s photos in the gallery below....

The singer-turned-actor talks about his parents' influence on his new album, his role in The Hunger Games – and his other passion: upholstery and interior design
Funny, I think, you compile a list of questions for a man known for his interracial heritage and for creating music that partakes equally of genres black and white, anticipating a conversation that will range back and forth across the racial faultlines of modern America – as indeed it does – and the first thing he mentions is your skin colour.
"You obviously didn't come here from the UK with that tan, now did you?" says Lenny Kravitz, shaking hands with a friendly smile. This being British press day in La, I guess that Kravitz has spent the morning talking to a succession of sun-starved and jet-lagged London journos, making my Hamiltonian mid-winter La hue more noticeable by contrast.

A music video aimed to support the revamped version of Shuggie Otis' 1977 song "Strawberry Letter 23" has been debuted. The Dayo-directed clip features Quincy Jones sharing screen with his collaborator Akon.
"The concept of the video is almost like the concept of the song," Akon told MTV. "It's about receiving a letter, but the letter is scented in a strawberry scent, and it happens to be the 22nd letter or 23rd letter. In the video, I'm receiving it from this beautiful admirer. I go through this fantasy world, this garden, and I'm following her through it. I actually get to meet her."
"Strawberry Letter 23" remix will be included in Quincy Jones' "Q: Soul Bossa Nostra" which is due in either spring or summer. "The song, it's more about feeling to me. 'Cause as far as the lyrical content, that's way beyond my generation. I'm still trying to understand everything it meant,...

Kon and Quincy Jones tap into 'abstract' feelings for single from Jones' covers album.

Akon and Quincy Jones love to crack jokes on each other. On the set of the video for the remake of "Strawberry Letter 23," Kon started the jesting by claiming he'd introduced Jones to a plethora of pretty women.
"You know that's not true," the legendary producer said, prompting a chuckle from Akon. Then, when Kon called the legendary producer "Uncle Q," Jones insisted that the two men were the same age.
Akon is one of many stars to have contributed to the LP Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, which is due sometime this spring or summer. The collection of performers and producers will deliver renditions of some of Jones' greatest hits.
"Timbaland brought the idea," Jones told MTV News of the project. "Three or four years ago,...

Can’t say I’m a huge Akon fan myself, but with maestro Quincy Jones giving an update to his 1977 production of the Brothers Johnson hit, Strawberry Letter 23 (written by and originally performed by Shuggie Otis), this might just be a summer tune to chill out to.
This will be the first single from Q’s upcoming album “Q: Soul Bossa Nostra” which is scheduled to be released this summer. So, with anticipation of better weather to come, here’s a teaser.
