Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Icelandic-Swedish-Polish drama “Lamb,” starring Noomi Rapace was awarded best film and actress for Rapace at the 54th edition of Sitges’ International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wrapped Sunday.
The prizes add to an Originality Prize which the film received when competing at July’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.
“Lamb,” a horror-comedy combo, follows protagonist Maria, played by Rapace, a woman living with her husband in the total loneliness of the Icelandic countryside. According to a Variety review, “creepy-funny-weird-sad ‘Lamb’ proves just how far disbelief can be suspended if you’re in the hands of a director — and a cast, and a SFX/puppetry department — who really commit to the bit.” Lamb is produced by Go to Sheep, Black Spark Film & TV and Madants with New Europe Film Sales and A24 attached.

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window sidebar for projects and films in progress has been a standout event on the Latin horror calendar since its launch in 2013, and is one of the Buenos Aires market’s most popular sections.
In the following years, it has become a key two-way conduit between Latin American and international festivals and box offices.
To that end, one of coordinator Javier Fernández’s primary focuses for this year’s seventh edition is to “continue promoting our collaboration with fantastic international film festivals and industry events,” he explained to Variety ahead of the December event.
This year’s Blood Window Spotlight on International Projects includes five works brought to Buenos Aires by the Bucheon Korea International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan), Sitges Catalunya Fantastic Film Festival and Bif-Market from the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival and Nordic Genre Invasion.

Argentina's Valentin Javier Diment won himself a lot of love in these pages with his La Memoria Del Muerto (Memory of the Dead), his deliriously strange 2011 effort that played like the bastard love child of Sam Raimi and Dario Argento. And while Diment has certainly kept himself busy in the years since as a producer, writer and director he has not returned to the director's chair until now with El Eslabon Podrido (The Rotten Link).A dark - you might even say grisly - black comedy about the residents of a remote village turning on one another, Diment's latest has been selected to take part in the Blood Window Galas at the Cannes Marche du Film and we've got the first trailer - subtitles included...

When you give your film collective a name like Gorevision, well, you're setting a certain standard for yourself. A standard of quality and good taste. A standard that the Argentinian collective that has given themselves that name fully live up to assuming, of course, that your version of good taste includes severed limbs, street punks and blood drenched girls in bikinis.Gorevision's latest effot - feature film Los Super Bonaerenses - comes with gonzo La Memoria Del Muerto director Javier Diment attached as a producer and the trailer promises an absolute parade of 80s style excess with its story of hard ass cops and street punks. The Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art (appropriately enough) is co-hosting (with Artsploitation and Danger After Dark) a double-feature of new Spanish-language films Hidden in the Woods and Memory of the Dead.
Hidden in the Woods, directed by Patricio Valladares, is currently the subject of an American remake. "Ana and Anny live with their deformed brother in the Chilean countryside, after having been tortured and imprisoned by their drug dealing father. Police investigate, bullets and chainsaws fly, and the three siblings are on their own, and on the road. Their father’s boss is in pursuit, convinced that the sisters know about his supply. He unleashes an army of assassins…but amidst a world of bloody executions, roadside prostitution, sexual assault, and even cannibalism, the bodies keep on piling up. Based on a bizarre true story yet with an outrageous streak of dark comedy, this is grindhouse spirit for the 21st century.

Ah, Argentina, the land of (seemingly) many, many crazy directors seemingly all too happy to spray blood and breasts across the screen. And among the craziest of the crazy is La Memoria Del Muerto helmer Javier Diment, who I once made the mistake of going shot for shot with before making him write a drunken review of his own movie. The next day would have been quite painful if not for the fact that I was still very much drunk when I woke up. And also that I had a guardian pouring pints of water down my throat before I was allowed to go to bed.But I digress.Diment moves from behind the camera to in front of it as one of the stars of Gonzalo and...

The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

A film that I wanted to check out at Fantastic Fest was Memory of the Dead (La Memoria del Muerto). Luckily, I have a screener of the film so I hope to check it out soon. Artsploitation Films will be releasing the film along with Korea’s Horror Stories and a Swedish horror film, which may remind you of Evil Dead, called Wither. Influenced by everything from Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) to Sam Raimi's Evil Dead II (1987) this bit of occult horror from director Valentín Javier Diment pops like a Tex Avery cartoon off the screen, offering solid laughs and genuinely shocking gross out gore. But it's also helped out by a good screenplay offering weirder than weird plot twists taking viewers who wish to go deeper beyond those surface reactions into some genuine poignancy. What emerges is a disturbing, somewhat disjointed but ultra fun genre flick with a bit of an edge. While mourning the unexpected death of her beloved husband Jorge (Gabriel Goity), Alicia (Lola Berthet) calls his closest friends and companions together. Upon everyone's arrival in the deserted country home Alicia reads a moving...

Another Fantastic Fest has come to a close. It's been a grueling week of madness, movies and mayhem...and I can't wait to do it again next year.
As I've written before, the main problem with film fests is you can never see everything you want. But that's okay because you end up being exposed to things you didn't know about — and that's usually a good thing. I missed plenty, but Kayley Viteo and I did see a lot of films at FF2012 and we've reviewed our favorites already (to find them, just plug "Fantastic Fest" into the search box). I know Kayley has some more reviews coming, but I'm going to take this opportunity to touch on some of the rest of the many things I saw this year.

An ambitious low-budget feature from Argentinian director Valentin Javier Diment, Memory of the Dead (La Memoria del Muerto) is equal parts Evil Dead and haunted house story, and pits Alicia's guests against returned spectres that include dead daughters, ex-girlfriends, and abusive fathers. There's quite a lot of the freaky stuff in here, the blood flows freely, and Diment does a nice job of conjuring an atmosphere that calls to mind both Italian giallo and the Hammer heyday. The hauntings feature some moments of inventive gore, the standout being a sequence wherein painter Nicanor (Matias Marmorato) is visited by the spirit of his dead, faceless sister who then proceeds to give herself a particularly gruesome makeover. By the end we've learned that there's more to the ritual than Alicia had initially revealed, of course, and that her guests are here for a very different reason. [Continued ...]...

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

I’ve been lucky enough to attend the Fantasia film Festival since the very first year and make no mistake about it, Fantasia has always been a highlight of every summer since. This year is no exception. With another impressive and diverse line-up, any movie crazed die hard genre fans such as myself are left with no choice but to spend hours studying both the program and schedule to fit in as many films as you possibly can. So I’ve decided to put together this list of must see films for anyone who is either new to the festival or simply doesn’t have as much time to properly browse through the program.

Argentinian director Javier Diment has long been one of the unsung heroes of the Latin American genre scene, a director who frequently overcomes his limited resources through sheer force of will, creativity and vision. Though his films have often been rough around the edges there's no denying that Diment is a talent just waiting for his chance to break through. And it may have just arrived with La Memoria Del Muerto.Diment's latest feature is his strongest piece of visual work yet, the teaser showing a pronounced giallo influence as it strings together a run of striking and disturbing images. It's a piece that rewards repeated viewing with new details popping out every time through and surely a sign of very good things to come....
