The soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun’s new coming-of-age horror film I Saw the TV Glow has arrived, with songs by Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers), Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, and more.
First announced in February, the soundtrack and its stacked lineup comes via A24 Music, and is available on a thematically-appropriate pink opaque vinyl. Atmospheric and diverse in style, the songs allude to the film’s emotional depth, and even contribute to the world of its narrative.
In the film, Bridgers and Sloppy Jane’s Haley Dahl appear as themselves, as do Kristina Esfandiari and her band King Woman. Also appearing in the film are Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Conner O’Malley, and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan (who contributed a bonus track to vinyl editions of the soundtrack).
Polachek’s song, “Starburned and Unkissed” dropped earlier this month as the soundtrack’s lead single.

It’s hard to imagine we’ll get a better soundtrack this year than that for Jane Schoenbruen’s I Saw the TV Glow. Bringing together yeule, Frances Quinlan, Florist, King Woman, Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, The Weather Station, L’Rain, Drab Majesty, Sloppy Jane, and more, with Twin Peaks Roadhouse-esque musical performances in the movie, the soundtrack has now arrived digitally ahead of a vinyl release in July. Meanwhile, the film continues to expand this weekend before going wide next weekend.
I said in my review, “Utterly hypnotic in rhythm from its very first scenes, we hear a haunting motif that will return: Yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” as Owen glides underneath a rainbow elementary school parachute. It’s a transfixing moment of color and sound and sets the stage as we’re whisked into this 1996-set world.

“I Saw the TV Glow” is a film that will have you searching for the soundtrack on your ride home from the theater. It’s an assembly of incredible tracks that collectively capture the emotional journey of Owen (Justice Smith) growing up in a suburban world where he can’t be his true self.
“Music was such a formative part of my teenage years and remains such a formative part of my life,” director Jane Schoenbrun said when they were on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast to discuss “I Saw the TV Glow.” “It just made sense that this very teenage movie needed a classic teenage soundtrack.”
The writer/director started with an ambitious plan: Ask their favorite modern bands to write songs for the film’s fictional 1990s TV show, “The Pink Opaque,” which becomes Owen’s obsession after new friend Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) introduces it to him.

Caroline Polachek has unveiled “Starburned and Unkissed,” her original contribution to the absolutely stacked soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun and A24’s new film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Produced by Polachek alongside A.G. Cook, “Starburned and Unkissed” is cathartic, noisy, and anthemic — the distorted electric guitar that drops in the song’s chorus is so visceral that it feels alien to the sun-soaked ecstasy of Polachek’s last album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. A press release notes that “Starburned and Unkissed” features prominently in the film, and the song’s grungy hue mirrors the film’s eerie, psychological horror backdrop. Stream the track below.
“Starburned and Unkissed” is the third single released in advance of I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack following Florist’s “Riding Around in the Dark” and yeule’s rendition of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen-Year Old Girl.” The 15-song Ost...

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

boygenius showed why they’re deserving of seven Grammy nominations with a pair of thrilling performances on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The dynamic trio of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers showcased their debut full-length, the record, with renditions of “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.”
In an apparent nod to The Beatles’ famed appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, boygenius and their backing band wore matching black suits and ties. Speaking of their backing band, Jay Som played bass on “Not Strong Enough” and percussion on “Satanist.”
boygenius also appeared in a sketch alongside host Timothée Chalamet in which they all spoofed pop musician Troye Sivan.

Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are just a couple of over 20 musicians who’ve contributed to Light in the Attic & Friends, a covers compilation that’ll be released for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event. As a preview, the father-daughter actor duo have shared their rendition of Willie Nelson’s “We Don’t Run,” featuring production from Christian Lee Hutson and mixing by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte.
Considering the delicate indie folk Maya releases on her own, it’s not too much of a surprise that Nelson’s classic outlaw country would be a staple of the Hawke household while she was growing up: “This song is off Willie’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. This is one of the best.”

Toward the end of boygenius’ headlining set at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, Phoebe Bridgers asked the sold-out crowd for a favor. Could we all put away our phones for the next song? Remarkably, all but a scattering of contrarians complied.
“I was emboldened to write this song because I knew we were going to do this band,” Bridgers said, in one of many references to the rock-solid friendships at the heart of her collaboration with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. “And if you relate to it, I’m so sorry.

El Kempner, the force behind the indie rock project Palehound, has announced that their next album Eye on the Bat will be out July 14th via Polyvinyl. Along with the news comes the record’s lead single “The Clutch.”
The brilliantly-titled Eye on the Bat was recorded in the Catskill Mountains throughout 2022, and marked the first time Kempner worked on producing their own music. The album is billed as “a documentation of illusions shattering in the face of profound change,” on which the singer-songwriter examines “the tiny details that build or break a relationship, and the flood that comes after.” Pre-orders are ongoing.
“It’s about me, but it’s also about me in relation to others,” Kempner explains of the record in a statement. “After hiding for so long — staying inside and hiding your life and hiding yourself from the world — I was ready. I think I flipped.”

Bachelor, the new project from indie favorites Jay Som (Melina Duterte) and Palehound (Ellen Kempner), have released a new song, “Sick of Spiraling,” from their upcoming debut album Doomin’ Sun, out May 28th via Polyvinyl.
“Sick of Spiraling” finds Bachelor embracing a bit of a country twang while Big Thief drummer James Krivchenia anchors the track with a dusty shuffle.
