Viggo Mortenson’s sophomore directorial offering features some exceptional performances from the actor-turned-director and his cast. The Dead Don’t Hurt follows the story of two pioneers (Mortensen and Vicky Krieps) as they fight for their lives and their love on the American frontier during a deadly Civil War.
HeyUGuys spoke to Mortensen and his cast about the importance of telling the story of how the West was made from the stand point of those who have never been given a voice before in the Western genre.
Krieps talked of her love for the character of Vivienne, a woman more than capable to stand on her own two feet in a man’s world. We also spoke to actor Danny Huston – son of legendary Hollywood filmmaker John Huston – about his love for the western genre and what it meant to him to be part of such an exciting project.

From the second scene of Mortensen’s second feature, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” (following 2020’s excellent father-son drama “Following”), audiences know the fate of Vivienne LeCoudy (Vicky Krieps). A resilient French Canadian pioneer woman left alone for years, Vivienne dies at home in bed, a single tear making tracks on her dusty cheek. For no good reason, Mortensen opts to tell her story out of order, flashing back to Vivienne’s childhood (to show the character-defining disappearance of her fur-trapper father) and carrying on past her death to reveal whether her absentee partner (played by Mortensen) manages to avenge what happened to her.

Plot: In the Old West, a Danish carpenter (Viggo Mortensen) falls in love with a French Canadian flower seller (Vicky Krieps). They resettle in a Nevada town, but when he goes off to fight in the Civil War, she must find a way to exist in their corrupt and violent environment, with the town lorded over by a land baron (Garret Dillahunt), his psychotic son (Solly McLeod) and a weasely mayor (Danny Huston).
Review: Just when you thought you’d seen every variation on the Western comes Viggo Mortensen‘s The Dead Don’t Hurt, which marks his second film as a director following the Sundance hit Falling. Mortensen, who also produced, wrote, and composed the music, co-stars with Vicky Krieps in what could best be called a deconstructed western. The American Western may have long passed its heyday, but the genre has endured throughout the years. While the visuals and ideas it addresses may change, the basic foundation continues to draw fans. After all, where else can you pit man versus man versus the environment on such a large scale? The Dead Don’t Hurt seeks to continue this legacy. The sophomore feature from Viggo Mortensen finally debuts in America after hitting the fall festival circuit. Featuring an excellent performance from Vicky Krieps as its face, The Dead Don’t Hurt mostly plays like a traditional genre exercise. However, using an immigrant couple at its center speaks to the changing landscape in American life.
The Dead Don’t Hurt Plot
Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) passes away with her husband, Holger (Mortensen), at her side. At the same time, Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) requests Holger help bring a local crime to justice.

As revisionist westerns go, Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is more contemplative than most. The film has its share of violence, brutality, and injustice, but its protagonists respond stoically to life’s misfortunes, where lust for revenge animates other heroes of the genre. And with a clearly defined focus on the lives of women and immigrants against the backdrop of the Civil War, Mortensen develops thematic material introduced in his directorial debut, 2020’s Falling, which pitted a relentlessly bigoted patriarch against his gay son.
The Dead Don’t Hurt also employs a fragmented timeline like the earlier film. In Falling, frequent flashbacks effectively rendered the confusion of the film’s dementia-suffering father. In The Dead Don’t Hurt, Mortensen has dialed back the aggressive cross-cutting in favor of a more straightforward editorial grammar. But the non-linear construction here serves both to generate dramatic irony and to ensure that the story...

Beta Cinema has arrived in Cannes with a slew of sales on its resistance epic William Tell.

The story takes place in the 14th century, “amidst the waning days of the Holy Roman Empire where Europe’s nations fiercely vie for supremacy and the ambitious Austrians, desiring more land, encroach upon Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation.” William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under threat from the oppressive Austrian king and his ruthless warlords.

Shout! Studios have released the first trailer for The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western starring Viggo Mortensen, who also wrote, directed, produced, and composed the music for the film.
As a big Western fan, I’m always eager to check out a new entry in the genre, and it looks like I’ll have to check out The Dead Don’t Hurt, as the trailer paints a dark, gritty story with some powerful performances. The film follows Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman who starts a relationship with Holgen Olsen (Mortenson), a Danish immigrant. They start a life together, but when Olsen leaves to fight in the Civil War, Vivenne is left to fend for herself.
This marks Mortenson’s second time behind the camera, as he made his feature directorial debut with Falling, a 2020 drama which followed a middle-aged gay man who moves his homophobic father (Lance Henriksen...

Deba Hakmat is impressively subtle as a British-Iranian teen whose celebrations come unstuck
Sasha Nathwani is a UK-based director of award-winning short films, of Iranian and Indian heritage, stepping up here to his feature debut. Dong cannot recall the events of the previous night, cleans up and stages a crime scene as if it were a botched robbery, but he inadvertently leaves traces. As the police investigate the apartment block, it becomes clear that all the residents have hidden secrets and a motive for murder.
“Not a Murder Story” is written and directed by Ko Chen-Nien and features Taiwanese stars Liu Kuan-Ting, Gingle Wang and Sonia Sui.
It debuted on Catchplay+ last week with the first two episodes immediately available and others uploading every Wednesday.

I remember hearing Viggo Mortensen on an episode of Here’s The Thing with Alec Baldwin where he came off as the rare combination of pretentious but likable. A man who carried himself as an intelligent, soft-spoken guy who liked arthouse movies and votes Green Party, he had just the right amount of movie-star charisma to pull off his slightly self-satisfied air. So essentially I want to root for the guy, especially when tackling moviemaking.
For a second I thought he was capitalizing on it in his second directorial effort. The opening two shots of The Dead Don’t Hurt showed some promise: 1) a man riding horseback in knight’s armor, followed by 2) a long take fixating on a dying Vicky Krieps’ face. From there I thought Mortensen was maybe, as director, smuggling a surrealism and slow cinema inspired by collaborator Lisandro Alonso into TIFF-premiere filler. Yet that mystery and formal precision soon ends.

The star directs, writes, composes and acts in this beautifully shot and sombre film about an old-school hero in a 19th-century frontier community fraught with tragedy
This sinewy, sombre, handsomely crafted and beautifully shot western is Viggo Mortensen’s second feature as a director, an impressively authored movie in which Mortensen is also writer, composer and star. With almost anyone else, this might be the recipe for narcissism, and yet that self-effacing and even reticent quality in Mortensen’s screen presence works against that danger. He is, however, certainly working within the traditional strong, silent template of the old-school western hero.
Holger Olsen (played by Mortensen) is a Danish immigrant to the prewar United States of the 1860s, who finds himself in San Francisco – a carpenter, rough-hewn outdoorsman and military veteran. He finds himself meeting the frank, unabashed gaze of Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) a French-Canadian woman of modest means but independent temperament,...

The western genre has been so pervasive throughout the entire history of the movies, and it is hard to imagine doing anything in it that hasn’t already been done. Viggo Mortensen, in writing, directing, producing and co-starring in only his second film behind the camera (after 2020’s Falling) finds a moving, if tragic, love story to play against the stunning landscape of the circa-1860s West, and somehow it all feels new. John Ford and Howard Hawks would love this movie.
The Dead Don’t Hurt is a title that promises something else, but without giving away spoilers, it ultimately feels right for this story of Holder Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who falls hard for Vivienne Le Coudy (a luminous Vicky Krieps), who he meets in San Francisco. Wanting some quiet peace in his life, they move together to Elk Flats, Nevada, and start what appears to be an idyllic life together.

Viggo Mortensen’s second feature as a director, the Western The Dead Don’t Hurt, is dedicated to his late mother, Grace Gamble Atkinson, who poetically lives on somewhat in the film’s lead character, the fiercely independent Vivienne Le Coudy, played by Vicky Krieps.
“Vivienne, she’s no wonder woman. But she’s very strong, has an inner strength, even though she has to suffer abuses. She’s a woman of her time. Yes, there’s a strength of character, not that they look similar,” Mortensen says of Krieps and his mother, who inspired the original story for the film when an image of Gamble Atkinson as a little girl came to the Lord of the Rings star while at his writing desk during the pandemic.

Vicky Krieps and Viggo Mortensen are unleashing original Western film “The Dead Don’t Hurt” this fall festival season.
Slated as a feminist take on the genre, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” is premiering at 2023 TIFF and marks lead star Mortensen’s sophomore effort as a director following his 2020 debut “Falling.” The logline for “The Dead Don’t Hurt” teases that Mortensen and Krieps “try and survive the corruption in a tough Nevada town” in the 1860s. Mortensen writes, directs, and acts in the film centered on two immigrants forging a new life on the frontier.
The full synopsis reads: “French-Canadian flower seller Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) and Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) meet in San Francisco. Vivienne is irreverent, fiercely independent, and refuses to wed, but agrees to travel with Holger to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada. The least compelling thing about “Tom Jones: Masterpiece” is Tom Jones himself. When the four-part miniseries debuts on April 30, it transforms Henry Fielding’s 800-plus page picaresque novel into a romcom in which the female lead isn’t only every bit the hero as her male counterpart, but often outshines him.
For the uninitiated, “Tom Jones” revolves around an orphan of the same name who is raised by a squire as if he were his own. It’s a coming-of-age story in which Tom grows up with and falls for his neighbor, Sophia Western, all while shagging plenty of other women and often getting in his own way. There are forces conspiring against him, of course: namely his cousin William Blifil, who is born into privilege and hates everything about his relative from Day 1.
This iteration of “Tom Jones,” which comes decades after the Oscar-winning, 1963 film starring Albert Finney, follows the same storyline,...

It’s been a while since PBS’ Masterpiece has lived up to its billing by tackling, or revisiting, a true literary classic. (Overextending Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon doesn’t count.) So while Henry Fielding’s 18th-century coming-of-age tome retains some mild shock value in its frisky particulars, writer Gwyneth Hughes’ brisk four-part adaptation — a welcome respite from the bloat of so many overlong streaming series — nestles perhaps too snugly in the Masterpiece costume-drama comfort zone. (The Oscar-winning 1963 film version starring Albert Finney is livelier.) (Credit: Courtesy of Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece) An age-appropriate Solly McLeod is quite charming, if a trifle bland, as Tom Jones’ title character, a foundling bastard raised by a kindly squire whose generosity of spirit he inherits despite his low birth. “Can a man ever be a gentleman who doesn’t know who his father is?” frets Tom, seemingly unaware that he’s more...

“The Rising” Season 2 has been canceled just months before production was due to start, Variety has learned.
Cast and crew were gearing up for the Sky Studios show when they were told to down tools two months before principal photography got underway. “It was canceled before they were due to start filming,” a source familiar with the project told Variety. “All the cast and everything [were ready to go] and they just pulled the plug.”
Variety understands there were a “number of reasons” the production will not go ahead.
The second season, which was set to be titled “Risen,” was due to have a similar premise to the first but with different characters, settings and themes, turning the show into something of an anthology series.

Variety understands there were a “number of reasons” the production will not go ahead.
The second season, which was set to be titled “Risen,” was due to have a similar premise to the first but with different characters, settings and themes, turning the show into something of an anthology series.

As part of its Tuesday panel at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour, Masterpiece has announced two new projects including a biographical series about Noele “Nolly” Gordon starring Helena Bonham Carter and “Moonflower Murders,” the follow up project to “Magpie Murders,” are in the works for the network.
“Nolly” tells the story of the British soap opera legend whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, Gordon is described as a woman who refused to play by the rules and ultimately transformed into a forgotten icon after the industry turned on her. Carter will star in the titular role.
“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies penned the script. “Nolly” marks the first production from Nicola Shindler’s new production company Quay Street Productions, which is part of ITV Studios.
