In a city where you can discover a film festival every weekend of the year, perhaps the most unique of such offerings is located in Rockaway, Queens. Taking place just a few blocks from the beach, the 6th edition of the Rockaway Film Festival will occur August 19-August 27, and we’re pleased to exclusively debut the lineup of award-winning documentaries, premieres, live music and dance performances, shorts programmes, and rare repertory screenings.
Organized by Sam Fleischner and Courtney Muller and sponsored by Blundstone®, Istic Illic Pictures, and NYC Ferry, this year’s edition will open at their flagship outdoor theater, Arverne Cinema (constructed using scraps of boardwalk that were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy), with Disney’s famous feature masterpiece Fantasia. There will be a program of shorts preceding it by cine-magician Oskar Fishinger, whose groundbreaking animations changed the cinematic frontier. Prismatic Ground is becoming a must-attend filmmaker-centered showcase on the rise for underground documentaries, avant-garde, and experimental cinema in the heart of New York City. Founded by Maysles Documentary Center co-programming director Inney Prakash, the initial virtual festival counter-responded to the approaches of many institutions that have inadequately handled virtual exhibitions and poorly supported artists. Prismatic Ground pays filmmakers screening fees, doesn’t divide features and shorts via “waves,” and merges early career and established voices in its accessible presentation of politically engaged, personal, and speculative imagery.
As this hybrid festival adapts the in-person components each subsequent year, the 3rd Prismatic Ground will present works at the Museum of the Moving Image, Maysles Documentary Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dctv’s Firehouse Cinema, Light Industry, and Anthology Film Archives with limited selections available online.
Taking place May 3-7, check out our picks to see below and learn more here.

Four documentary filmmakers were invited to participate in the Sundance Institute’s newly created Indigenous non-fiction intensive program that concludes July 29.
The three-day program was created to identify Indigenous artists creating formally bold and personal work and to uplift them with a small grant and mentorship on a current edit of their short-form documentary films.
The four filmmakers selected to partake in the new initiative are: Sarah Liese (“Coming In”), Sean Connelly (“A Justice Advancing Architecture Tour”), Olivia Camfield and Woodrow Hunt (“If You Look Under There You’ll Find It”). The advisors for the inaugural program include Emmy award-winning filmmaker Colleen Thurston, filmmaker-editor Maya Daisy Hawke (“Cave of Forgotten Dreams”), and filmmaker Darol Olu Kae (“I Ran From It and Was Still in It”).
Each participant will receive year-round creative support from Sundance’s Indigenous program staffers as they work to complete their films.

Chicago – The latest cinematic visionaries are often discovered at the South by Southwest Festival. Filmmakers like the Duplass brothers, Chicago’s Joe Swanberg and Lena Dunham got their first prominent notices at the fest. In that spirit, the 2021 SXSW Grand Jury Awards were announced on March 19th.
The top film in Narrative Features was director Megan Park’s stunning psychological treatise on school shootings, “The Fallout.” The charming “falling dominoes” documentary feature “Lily Topples the World” took the top prize in that category. And in the short film competition, the stark and contemporary “Play it Safe” took the Narrative top prize for its poignant exploration into preconceived notions and actions in race relations.
The following is the list of top honorees …

Upcoming movies from two Argentine filmmakers, Lucrecia Martel’s “Chocobar” and Mari Alessandrini’s “Zahori,” won the top Pardo 2020 Awards at the Locarno Film Festival’s The Films After Tomorrow, its highest-profile competition, the festival announced Friday.
Of other major plaudits in The Films After Tomorrow, a section highlighting Covid-19-hit productions, “Savagery,” from Portugal’s Miguel Gomes, scooped the strand’s Special Jury Prize. Its prize for most innovative project went to “The Fabric of the Human Body,” from Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor.
The top awards – Martel and Alessandrini winning Pardos for best international and Swiss projects, respectively, which both come with SFr 70,000 cash prizes – went to movie projects that explore themes of race, or the malpractice of supposedly unimpeachable authority.
Lead produced by Argentina’s Rei Cine, “Chocobar,” a hybrid creative documentary, sees Martel double down on the historical and cultural context of the assassination in 2007 of indigenous activist Javier Chocobar,...
