The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.
The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.
Related: 2023 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.
CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.
It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

Lauren Lapkus (Crashing) and Krysta Rodriguez (Just One Kiss) have landed lead roles in the upcoming CBS multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion. According to Variety, Rodriguez will play Eliza, a fun-loving and quick-witted alcoholic who runs a bookstore/bar in New Orleans with her uncle. After getting in trouble with the law one too many times, Eliza is assigned a court-appointed “sober companion” who will force her to confront her demons, get her life together, and stay sober. Lapkus will play Eliza’s sober companion, Shelley, a joyful, high-spirited oddball. While her non-stop enthusiasm and unconventional methods aren’t to everybody’s taste, she’s the best at what she does — even if she drives Eliza crazy in the process. Sober Companion is written and executive produced by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal. Jennie Snyder Urman co-wrote the story with them and is exec producing under her Sutton Street Productions banner alongside Joanna Klein.

CBS has finally dropped the official trailer for Good Sam, its latest medical drama.
The show finds Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) taking on the role of Chief of Surgery when her father, Dr. Rob Griffith (Jason Isaacs), falls into a coma.
The drama picks up when Rob wakes up months later intending to resume his career where he left off.
“Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent,” reads the official logline for the project.
Sam's father "defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.”
It is a compelling hook, but the success will all come down to whether the show manages to portray the fraught relationship between the father and daughter well.

Written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir and directed by Tessa Blake, Our Ladies of Brooklyn is a dramedy about two millennial nuns – Sister Francis (Kinnunen), a devout true believer, and Sister Maggie (Ortiz), a new arrival who has yet to take her final vows – who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic Church.
Haine will play Ellie, Sister Frances’ little sister who arrives out of nowhere to wreak havoc. On the surface, she might seem like a wholesome Midwesterner with a badass edge. But beneath it all, she’s an unparalleled con artist with a heart of gold.

Pilot season at The CW is happening after all.
The youth-skewing broadcaster has handed pilot orders to three projects: Ava DuVernay’s superhero drama Naomi, the live-action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls and a millennial nun dramedy exec produced by Jennie Snyder Urman.
The network has also ordered a reboot of classic sci-fi drama The 4400 straight-to-series.
There had been some question as to whether the network would go completely straight-to-series for next broadcast season, given the uncertainty around the pandemic, but CW chairman Mark Pedowitz has decided to stick with the pilot process.
“I believe in pilots, I believe you see things in pilots,” he told Deadline last month.
The three pilot orders do not, however, spell the end of the road for the network’s other development projects, and sources tell Deadline that there may be room for more. It has also developed the Greg Berlanti-produced Wonder Girl...

The CW has given a straight-to-series order for a reboot of “The 4400,” while three other projects are moving forward with pilots, including Ava DuVernay’s “Naomi” and the “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series.
“The 4400” is based on the USA Network series of the same name, which ran for four seasons starting in 2004 and featured a then-unknown Mahershala Ali.
In the CW version, 4,400 overlooked, undervalued or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last 100 years are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4,400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they’ve been returned with a few… upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back now for a specific reason.

The CW has made a number of orders for the 2021-2022 season, including a pilot order for the live-action “Powerpuff Girls” series.
In total, The CW announced three pilot orders and one straight-to-series pickup, with the latter being a reboot of the USA Network series “The 4400.” The other two pilots are for the DC project “Naomi” from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship and an untitled religious dramedy from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir. All of the projects are created by women.
The “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series was first announced as being in development back in August. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken, the new series sees the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
The project hails from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody,...
