Patrick Ness’ 2008 science fiction young adult novel The Knife of Never Letting Go was published the same year as Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, but while the latter launched a dystopian YA franchise, Ness’ Chaos Walking series seemed to attract more of a cult following despite tackling similar early-2000s issues through a speculative lens. While Collins struck an arrow through the heart of reality television, Ness turned his attention to information overload, manifesting it as the Noise: an ever-present broadcast of one’s most private, cringeworthy, hateful, earnest thoughts for all to hear—but only for men.
On the “New World,” an alien planet only recently colonized by humans, the all-male settlement of Prentisstown has ascribed varyingly demanding interpretations of masculinity and morality to their members’ handling of the Noise. Chaos Walking has been a long time coming. Bolstered by beloved source material and the promise of inspired direction by Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, the film seemed to have everything it needed to be a worthwhile adaptation. Unfortunately, it’s almost everything but.
Chaos Walking is stodgy, self-important, and sporadically Biblical, toothless YA adaptation that mindlessly chews at ideas it doesn’t develop. It’s a frustrating reinforcement of its genre’s worst habits, with little redeeming it beyond brief glimpses of inspired storytelling. Based on Patrick Ness’s 2008 book The Knife of Never Letting Go, Liman’s insipid translation lacks the narrative boldness and broader appeal of its source material.

Daisy Ridley, who swaps Jedi mind tricks for a very different type of ‘force’ in Chaos Walking, sat down recently to talk about her new sci-fi film in which she co-stars along with everyone’s favourite Spider-Man, Tom Holland. Joining her was British-American author Patrick Ness who wrote the best-selling novel ‘The Knife of Never Letting Go’ on which the film is based.
The film is directed by Doug Liman and along with Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, the film stars Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo. Hayley Donaghy was asking the questions.
Chaos Walking will be available to Rent from Digital Retailers April 2nd, 2021.

Photo: 'Chaos Walking'/Lionsgate ‘Chaos Walking’ follows a traditional Hollywood structure and in theory, should be a really good movie. The dense setups show how ambitious the film is to expand into something much more than just one film, but the vague payoffs and lack of character development limit audience’s interest in even wanting more. Based upon the best-selling novel ‘The Knife of Never Letting Go’ by Patrick Ness, a co-writer of the screenplay along with Christopher Ford, this movie tries to take the long books to the screen with a Cinematic evolvement. There are many great qualities of this film, such as the ravishing visual effects, picturesque set design, and captivating and transfixing cinematography. As expected, the directing and performances are impeccable, it’s the excessively fast-paced rhythm of the story, forced messages, and several unfulfilled details throughout that leave the film ultimately disorganized. It was more than three and a half years ago when cameras began rolling on Chaos Walking, the sci-fi adventure movie starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). It’s finally seeing the light of day this week. Although production wrapped in late 2017, this film ended up destined to run the same gauntlet that most movies helmed by director Doug Liman do: reshoots, re-edits and rethinking, all in service of cobbling together something that its studio, Lionsgate this time, could call “releasable.”
In the end, however, the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Chaos Walking is probably far more interesting than what was produced. Based on a novel called The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (the first in a trilogy), Chaos Walking is a bland, inert, and deadly dull affair that fails to translate its central concept to the screen.

Doug Liman’s foray into science fiction has given us inexplicable lows like Jumper, and impressive heights such as Edge of Tomorrow. Chaos Walking finds an intriguing middle ground. A concept ripe for imaginative exploration, a stacked cast, and incredible set pieces don’t quite compensate for a lack of depth that would otherwise make the experience wholly satisfying.
Chaos begins on an unknown planet inhabited by an all-male colony. Their thoughts are an unfiltered “Noise,” wherein anything you think can be heard––if not controlled. This gives way to The Mayor (Mads Mikkelsen), who is in charge of the colony and dressed like a vintage Eastwood character, setting up an intriguing mix of the old west and dystopian aesthetics. We also understand The Mayor is the best at controlling his Noise because we never hear what he thinks––unlike Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), who has no control of his thoughts.

In sci-fi Western “Chaos Walking,” the mud-crusted colonists of New World have a tricky job of keeping secrets. That’s because something about the atmosphere on this far-flung planet — which otherwise looks a lot like the incentive-friendly Peach State of Georgia — interacts with the human brain, resulting in a curious phenomenon known as “the Noise,” a swirly CG effect whereby every little thing that goes through people’s heads can be heard by those around.
Now, if you’ve ever wished you could read the mind of “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland, this is your chance, although the sad truth about director Doug Liman’s flashy would-be franchise-starter is that his latest character doesn’t have a lot of big ideas to share. Mostly, he’s worried about appearing butch to his peers — frequently repeated “Be a man!” could be a mantra — or covering potentially embarrassing admissions with other thoughts. “I am Todd Hewitt,...

A $125 million studio movie about a human colony on a distant planet of retro-futuristic “McCabe & Mrs. Miller” cosplayers? Where every man’s internal monologue loudly emanates from his head like overlapping speaker feedback in a cloud of “Noise” so intense that you can see it take shape on screen (and where every woman was killed in a recent war with the indigenous species of humanoid monsters)? “Chaos Walking” could’ve and should’ve been the most arresting, unusual sci-fi blockbuster since “Cloud Atlas.” Or “Mortal Engines,” at the very least.

Lionsgate’s YA sci-fi adventure Chaos Walking will be released in theaters nationwide and in IMAX on March 5, 2021, a push-back from the previous Jan. 22 date. The move comes as distributors begin to adjust the Q1 calendar in response to the ongoing pandemic, which they are hoping quells by spring given the good news about the vaccine.
The $100M Tom Holland-Daisy Ridley feature has been delayed numerous times, one of its big delays due to $15M reshoots in mid-2018. However, Ridley’s schedule on the Star Wars movies and Holland’s Spider-Man and Avengers pushed those reshoots. In May 2019 it was reported that Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez was helping out with those reshoots in Atlanta while Liman remained on board. The feature was originally dated to open on March 1, 2019.

In May 2019 it was reported that Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez was helping out with those reshoots in Atlanta while Liman remained on board. The feature was originally dated to open on March 1, 2019.

So far the background music appears to add a lot of intensity to this otherwise odd but compelling tale since one thing that people are bound to notice about Chaos Walking is that men’s thoughts are on display as the Noise, while the women have all disappeared or died as it’s stated at one point. Tom Holland gets to play the lead character of Todd Hewitt, who comes upon a young woman, Viola, who presents a mystery that he can’t unravel but also helps to kick off the story in a way that leaves them both on the run and

Chaos Walking turned out to be an unexpectedly fitting title for the YA sci-fi movie that’s had a ridiculously long road to the screen. Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley were cast back in 2016, with principal photography occurring in 2017. Poor test screenings in 2018 then forced the cast and crew to reunite for extensive reshoots, which were much delayed due to the leads’ Marvel and Star Wars commitments and finally took place in 2019.
After all that, we’re now just a few months away from the pic being released in theaters and today, our first bit of footage of Holland and Ridley in action appeared online. IGN shared the exclusive teaser trailer on social media, promising that the full thing is coming this Thursday, November 19th at 6am Pt/9am Et.

Chaos Walking is a film project that’s been trying to happen for quite some time now. The movie is based on the young adult book trilogy of the same name and has been in development since 2011. In 2016, the project got new life when director Doug Liman came on board, with Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) starring. The movie was set to come out March 1st (last month), but obviously that didn’t happen.
According to reports, Lionsgate took a look at the film and deemed it “unreleasable”. So now Lionsgate is looking to pour millions of dollars into the movie to do three weeks worth of reshoots to make the movie work, and that’s after already having spent $100 Million! That’s pretty harsh. And pretty bizarre considering the talent on board.
Although, there have been rumors of Liman being a little difficult to work with.

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley will star opposite each other in Chaos Walking, Doug Liman's adaptation of Patrick Ness's Ya novel.
Chaos Walking, at first glance, may seem like just another Ya novel adaptation in a field increasingly filled with failed, forgotten attempts. However, two of Hollywood’s hottest new names in current Spider-Man star Tom Holland and Star Wars sequel star Daisy Ridley are auspiciously joining forces to headline the Lionsgate film project based on Patrick Ness's 2008-2010 novel series.
The premise of Chaos Walking centers on a dystopian future, this time taking place on a planetary colony in which the survivors live in fear of a virus known as "The Noise," which symptomatically manifests a stream of visions, images, words and sounds shared by everyone else. In essence, it could be seen as a metaphorical social media malady.
