Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
Duffield is working on the screenplay with Kraus, and here’s the story they’ll be bringing to the screen: Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand – to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. He knows it’s a long shot, but Jay feels it’s the only...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life,...

Snake Plissken is back in action. A reboot of John Carpenter’s 1981 action film “Escape from New York” is set up at 20th Century Studios with the directing team Radio Silence attached to direct, two individuals with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Radio Silence is made up of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella. The team is best known for their work on “Ready or Not” and for directing the fifth “Scream” film (released earlier this year) as well as the upcoming “Scream 6,” which is slated for 2023. They’ll be partnering with Carpenter himself for the “Escape from New York” reboot, which has Carpenter serving as executive producer.
Radio Silence will produce alongside Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona for The Picture Company. A search for a screenwriter is underway, so naturally specifics on the plot are unknown.

Filmmaking team Radio Silence — a trio made up of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella — is set to direct 20th Century’s reboot of John Carpenter’s cult classic “Escape From New York,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The studio won a bidding war for rights to the reboot in early 2015, with Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company set to produce.
Neal Cross, creator of the BBC crime series “Luther,” wrote the previous drafts of the script. The search for a new writer is underway.
Kurt Russell starred as the iconic one-eyed anti-hero Snake Plissken in the original dystopian action film, released by Avco Embassy in 1981. Studiocanal owned the rights to the film, which had several suitors, and was won by Fox on the back of the studio’s competitive bid.

We sat down with director Fede Alvarez at the Movies on Demand Lounge at the Hard Rock during the San Diego Comic-Con to get you cats the scoop on the film's inevitable sequel and more. Read on for details and info.
First on our agenda we wanted to know the scoop on if and when there will be an extended cut of the film released as an alternate extended version was referenced in the Blu-ray commentary several times. "People are always asking me about the director's cut of the film," Alvarez tells us. "Honestly though, the version out right now Is the director's cut. I feel it is the best cut of the movie and it's also my favorite. We really didn't cut much as the MPAA had us make only minimal trims, like when Jane cut her tongue in half, we could only show that for two seconds instead of three.

With his version of Evil Dead finally available on Blu-ray and DVD, director Fede Alvarez has been a bit more chatty regarding its sequel, whether it be Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness 2. Check it out!
Collider caught up with Alvarez. who had the following to say about what's next:
"We’re discussing. We’re still talking with Sam [Raimi] about it and trying to figure out what we should do.Maybe because I’m a child of the 80′s, but for me a sequel is a story that follows the previous one, and sometimes if you haven’t seen the original, then you don’t understand the second one. So that’s kind of my ideal sequel – a movie that continues the story, takes one character and moves on, and moves forward with that character that survived with the first one.”
Given that we adored Jane Levy, yes, bring more on with her!

The advertising industry in America has become so ridiculously homogenized it almost feels as if creativity itself has died a slow and painful death. Take the remake of Evil Dead for instance. We got your standard stuff. Elsewhere had some fun!
Bloody Disgusting pointed us towards the website 9 the Creative Shop, who recently scanned and published an ad that appeared in their newspaper's obituaries section. The kicker? It's almost time, fiends! We're just a day away from co-writer/director Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead, which arrives in theaters this weekend. Even though we had the opportunity to chat with him in Austin at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, a four-minute interview is just never enough.
That being said, Dread Central headed out for the Evil Dead press day to talk some more about the remake with Alvarez and the film's star, Jane Levy.
This time around, though, we had more time and dug a little deeper into the story and the characters so be forewarned- This Video Is Very Spoiler-heavy and is meant to be enjoyed once you've checked out Evil Dead for yourself.
If you haven't had the chance to see it yet, come back here once you're all caught up, and in the meantime you can check out our Completely Spoiler-free video interviews from SXSW below.

Evil Dead terrorized the attendees at WonderCon in Anaheim, California, today, and Casey King called in with some highlights from the panel and a rundown of what you cats missed. First up there was some sequel talk...
Director Fede Alvarez told the absolutely electrified crowd in attendance that should his film do well, he has plans to do his sequel while Raimi hopefully does Army of Darkness 2. Then he would like there to be a seventh crossover film which will tie the franchise all together. Bruce Campbell agreed, chiming in that "seven is a nice number."
King goes on to report that a special trailer for WonderCon was also shown that was slightly different from the red-band one we already have (we suspect it'll be online soon so check back), and finally the panel wrapped with a video message from Sam Raimi introducing the clip which ran earlier this week...

A remote cabin in the woods becomes a blood-soaked chamber of horrors when a group of 20-something friends unwittingly awakens an ancient demon in Evil Dead, the highly anticipated reboot of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror film The Evil Dead.
In theaters April 5th and featuring a fresh young cast, Evil Dead is a bone-chilling film that combines all the raw excitement and gleeful gore of the acclaimed original with a series of shocking new twists.
Mia (Jane Levy), a young woman whose life has been marred by loss and addiction, asks her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and their childhood friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) to join her at the family’s rustic cabin to help her overcome her demons. Our friends across the pond at Fancy Dress Costumes recently sat down with Evil Dead costume designer Sarah Voon to discuss the various costumes and look of the characters in the flick. Even cooler? They were kind enough to send over their Q&A for you cats. Dig it!
Check out the goods below, and big thanks to Martin Delaney at Fancy Dress Costumes!
Question: Were you a fan of the original Evil Dead films?
Sarah Voon: I used to love horror in my youth, so I had seen all the greats from the ’80s including the original Evil Dead, which I found truly terrifying at the time.
Question: How much of your job revolved around making the cast look as unglamorous/beaten up as possible?
Sarah Voon: I’d say 80%. All the costumes were aged and taken back a notch or two, so nothing was ‘box fresh’ to start with.

Come April 5th the iconic Book of the Dead, which we first met over 30 years ago now, will set its sights on a new batch of victims to torture in Fede Alvarez's reboot of the Evil Dead.
Co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, Evil Dead follows a group of five friends who travel to a remote cabin in order to help one of them (Jane Levy) kick her deadly drug habit. But what starts off as a normal intervention quickly escalates into something far more sinister when they discover the aforementioned Book, which unleashes a demonic force that wants to send all their souls straight to hell.
Evil Dead also stars Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas and Elizabeth Blackmore; during a recent press day at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Dread Central caught up with the cast of the remake to hear more on their thoughts about being...
