As season six of Virgin River starts production, Netflix confirms that a prequel is also in the works to the hit show.
Romantic drama Virgin River, based on the popular book series by Robyn Carr, has grown into one of Netflix’s biggest hits since it launched on the streamer in 2019.
Running for five seasons thus far, the plot follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe, who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River, thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind. But she soon discovers that small-town living isn’t quite as simple as she expected.
The show stars Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel, alongside Martin Henderson as he love interest Jack. Other cast members include Colin Lawrence, Jenny Cooper, Lauren Hammersley, Annette O’Toole and Tim Matheson.

Netflix’s hit series Virgin River might be getting a spinoff. The streaming service is considering a prequel series focusing on Mel’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) parents, according to a new report.

The Virgin River prequel is currently in development at Netflix, Deadline reports. The show would focus on Mel’s mother, Sarah, and her relationship with Everett Reid.
In the 2023 Virgin River Christmas episodes, Mel learned that her mother had a relationship with a man in Virgin River and that man was her biological father. That sent Mel on a quest to find her biological dad, who was eventually revealed to be Everett. Though at first he wanted nothing to do with his daughter, he eventually had a change of heart. We may not be headed to Virgin River just yet, but the cast sure is!
Since we all love a little small-town gossip and great news, here are a few tidbits to spread around and discuss courtesy of Deadline:
Virgin River is back in production today!
While we still won't get to escape to our favorite town and all the melodrama that ensues there until 2025, at least we know the strike delays are out of the way, and filming is back in motion.
And since the cast loves us so much, they'll hopefully be teasing us with tidbits to hold us over along the way.
But that's not all we have to mull over in the interim.
The hit Netflix series will take a spin at its own spinoff in the form of a prequel.

Netflix is developing a “Virgin River” prequel series.
“Virgin River” follows the lives of the residents of the eponymous Northern California town, including nurse practitioner Mel (Breckenridge), bar owner and veteran Jack (Henderson), town doctor Doc (Matheson), mayor Hope (O’Toole) and many more.
If ordered to series, the prequel would follow Mel’s parents: Sarah Jensen, who died when Mel was young, and Everett Reed (John Allen Nelson), who was revealed as Mel’s biological father in Season 6 finale “Father Christmas.”
“Virgin River” premiered in 2019 and is now in production on its sixth season. The series, which consistently dominates the Netflix Top 10 when new seasons are released, is based on Robyn Carr’s novel series of the same name and was developed for television by Sue Tenney. Patrick Sean Smith serves as showrunner and is writing the prequel series.

Exclusive: It’s double dose of good news for Virgin River fans. Netflix is looking to expand the Virgin River world with a spinoff series, Deadline has learned. Meanwhile, Season 6 of the romantic drama, delayed by strikes and weather, is starting production today in Vancouver.
Before Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) sweeping Virgin River romance, Mel’s late mother Sarah too fell in love with a man from the picturesque Northern California town, Everett, who was revealed in the recent Virgin River Christmas special as Mel’s biological father.
The potential prequel, which is currently in development, will explore Sarah and Everett’s origin story. The upcoming Season 6 will provide a glimpse into the duo’s past, featuring young Everett and Sarah in flashbacks.
Casting is underway for actors to play the characters as guest stars in Season 6 of Virgin River.

Considering how gorgeous the town is and how much we love the characters and their relationships, it’s hard to imagine Virgin River ending. The Netflix drama, based on Robyn Carr’s books, dropped two holiday episodes in November, and it has already been renewed for a sixth season. But are those who work on it thinking about the series wrapping up? For showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, there’s “no end in sight,” he told TV Insider. “I think as long as these characters are living their lives, and we’re telling the stories in deep personal emotional ways, then I hope the series can continue on for many, many, many seasons to come.” After all, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) just met her biological father — whose ominous “I have something to tell you” is taking us into Season 6 — and she and Jack (Martin Henderson) have yet to get married. [This story contains major spoilers from season five, parts one and two, of Virgin River.]
Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith wanted the newly released holiday episodes of the Netflix series to feel lighter, given the weight of season five.
Following the part one release of 10 intense and emotional episodes (on Sept. 7) — which saw a wildfire hit Virgin River, an illegal drug business showdown, a sexual assault court trial and a difficult miscarriage — Smith knew he wanted the two holiday episodes that are now streaming to have a “feeling of family and warmth.”
Still, the beloved small town couldn’t escape at least some drama this holiday season, including Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) tracking down her biological father, who also lives in Virgin River. And of course, there’s no Virgin River seasonal event — this time, the Christmas tree decorating contest — without some challenges.
But as Smith looks ahead to the already renewed next season, he admits that his “intention was never to have...

A major Virgin River mystery has been solved. The two-part Christmas special dropped on Netflix on Nov. 30, and it revealed the answer to the question fans have been asking for months: Who is Mel Monroe’s biological father? The man in question – played by John Allen Nelson – wasn’t anyone we’ve seen before on the show, but if his face looks familiar, there’s a good reason. Nelson’s long career includes roles in a popular soap opera, an iconic 1990s TV show, and a brief appearance in one of the most popular sitcoms in TV history.

Netflix’s Virgin River closed out its fifth season with a two-episode Christmas special set during the holidays, more than three months after the “Labor Day” Season 5 Part 1 finale. As suggested by the aptly titled Episode 512, “Father Christmas,” the special’s main storyline follows the bombshell cliffhanger in the Part 1 finale, that Mel’s biological father is likely a man from Virgin River.

Season 5 Part 1 of Virgin River featured more heartbreak for Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) as she suffered a miscarriage while expecting her first child with Jack (Martin Henderson) having previously lost her baby with her late husband Mark in a stillbirth. In May 2023, Netflix confirmed that it had renewed Virgin River for a sixth season. However, the show’s writers could not immediately get back to work on the new episodes due to the WGA strike, which began in May. The strike ended in late September, allowing the writers to return to work.

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episodes 505 and 506 of Netflix’s Virgin River.
Virgin River‘s seasons are typically built around three tentpoles, the season premiere, the finale and a big event episode in the middle that propels the storytelling with plenty of aftermath to deal with in the remaining episodes. Big town events in the mid-run episodes have included the Moonlight Mingle dance in Season 1, the Lumberjack Games in Season 3 and the Renaissance Fair in Season 4. In Season 5, which marked the first for the hit Netflix series with new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith at the helm, a wildfire threatening the town of Virgin River. Because of the scope, it took two episodes — 5 and 6 — to deal with the natural disaster and its immediate aftermath.
During the episodes, still reeling from being ousted as the town’s mayor, Hope (Annette O’Toole) rises to the challenge and leads the evacuation efforts.

Netflix is returning to Virgin River.
The streaming giant used its time in front of Madison Avenue ad buyers at its first-ever upfront presentation Wednesday in New York to announce that the soapy drama starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson will return for a sixth season. The renewal comes as season five of Virgin River is slated to premiere at a to-be-determined date in the fall on the streaming giant.
The drama based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr has been a standout performer, according to Netflix’s internal measurement. (The streamer, like others, does not release traditional viewership data.)
Patrick Sean Smith serves as showrunner on season five after taking over for Sue Tenney, who helmed the first four seasons of the Hallmark-like drama. Season five has already wrapped production.

Virgin River fans will have to wait a little longer for Season 5, which will premiere this fall, Netflix announced in conjunction with its first ever upfront presentation Wednesday. And there is more news about the popular romantic drama, starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson — it is getting an early Season 6 pickup.
While it may be unexpected, the early renewal is not surprising.
Virgin River, based on the bestselling book series by Robyn Carr, has been among Netflix’s most successful series. Its most recent fourth season amassed 277 million hours viewed in its first 28 days, on par with Season 3, and held the top spot in the streamer’s Top 10 for two weeks.

Virgin River has been a huge hit for Netflix since its launch in 2019.
The romantic drama landed a two-season renewal last year, keeping it on the air through its fifth season.
With Virgin River Season 4 recently wrapped, there have been questions about whether the show will end with its fifth season.
Netflix tends to end shows before they get to a fifth season, unless they are global hits.
Thankfully, Jinny Howe, the Netflix drama head sees "longevity and growth" ahead, meaning that there's a good chance the show will continue for a sixth season.
However, Howe wants the show to continue "as long as the audience asks for it and shows up."
“We see with Season 4 that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well,” Howe told Deadline.

Time moves slowly on Netflix's megahit Virgin River, and it will continue to do so under new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.
TV Line reported this week that the Greek creator and Chasing Life EP, is taking over from original showrunner Sue Tenney.
“Sue had moved on to other projects, and I’d worked with Netflix on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings so we had a pre-existing relationship,” Smith said in a statement to TV Line.
“I was already a fan, and I was super excited when they came to me with the possibility," the new showrunner said.
"The cast cares so much about the show and the fans, and they want to put on the best show possible."
"I think they’ve done that for the past four seasons, so it just makes it easier for me to pick up the ball and keep running into Season 5 and beyond," he added.

At the 61st Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Jason Priestley looked back at the success of ’90s teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and explained why the 2019 reboot “BH90210” got canceled by Fox after one season.
“BH90210” was described by Variety as a “soapy parody” that gave “the actors behind our favorite characters the space to play versions of themselves while poking fun at the public personas, rabid fans and roles that made them famous.” It saw original series cast members Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. But it was a high stakes gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, said the North Vancouver native.

Ahead of the August premiere of “BH90210,” Fox’s meta-revival of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Tori Spelling says she “never” had a feud with co-star Shannen Doherty, despite the rumors surrounding the actresses following Doherty’s departure from the show after Season 4 in 1994.
