Has been clarinetist with the
New York Philharmonic for sixty years, the single longest tenure for any instrumentalist with an orchestra. He announced his retirement in 2009. He has been principal clarinetist with the orchestra since 1960. Among the conductors he has played for are
Leonard Bernstein,
Kurt Masur, and
Zubin Mehta.
