Vince Staples, the young and talented American rapper and singer, has been making waves in the music industry with his unique style and thought-provoking lyrics. Born Vincent Jamal Staples on July 2, 1993, in Compton, California, he later moved to North Long Beach to escape the high crime rates of his hometown. Growing up in poverty, Staples found solace in music and sports, ultimately paving the way for his successful career in the entertainment industry.
Staples had a challenging upbringing, but he found refuge in academics and extracurricular activities. He attended Optimal Christian Academy during his formative years, where he had a positive and influential experience. However, he moved around frequently, attending several high schools in different cities, such as Jordan High School in Long Beach, Mayfair High School in Lakewood, and Esperanza High School in Anaheim. Staples’ involvement with street gangs during his childhood is well-known, but he has since become...

This spring, Largo, Maryland, rapper Q Da Fool was prepping his comeback album after a two-year prison stint. But after only two months home, he was arrested for “promoting violence” after dropping a song and going on Instagram Live. He says his probation officer arrested him and told him they were incarcerating him for his own safety. It’s unclear what the exact charge was, but Q served another two months in jail before coming home again and deciding to overhaul his creative approach into what’s become Art of Ambition,...

Idles have shared “Grace,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, Tangk. Stream it below.
Co-produced by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, hip-hop producer Kenny Beats, and the band’s own Mark Bowen, “Grace” is a slow-burning track that takes its time building to the crescendo. “No god, no king,” Joe Talbot sings on the chorus. “I said love is the thing.”
“The song came from nowhere and everything. It was a breath and a call to be held,” Talbot said in a statement. “The only words or singing that came from our sessions with Nigel and I needed it, truly. All is love.”
Tangk is out on February 16th and also includes the lead single, “Dancer,” featuring James Murphy. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Idles have announced their fifth studio album, Tangk. The LP is out February 16th via Partisan Records, and as a preview, they’ve shared “Dancer,” the lead single that features LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang on background vocals. Check it out below.
Idles drew from a wide swath of influences in making Tangk. The record was produced by the band’s guitarist Mark Bowen, as well as Radiohead’s go-to boardsman Nigel Godrich and Denzel Curry/Vince Staples collaborator Kenny Beats. A press release describes the project as more love-oriented than the post-punks’ previous efforts, which often dealt in political commentary.
“Tangk,” singer Joe Talbot said in a statement. “I needed love. So I made it. I gave love out to the world and it feels like magic. This is our album of gratitude and power. All love songs. All is love.”

The producer Kenny Beats has noticed some strange phenomena at his shows over the past few years. For one, the crowds have gotten noticeably bigger, as have merch sales and streams. But most notably, he says, he’s grown accustomed to members of the audience viewing him more as a friend than a performer. This is thanks to his massively popular Discord server, which hosts approximately 135,000 users and has rooms dedicated to questions about audio engineering and specific production software, as well as general channels dedicated to banter or games.

Vince Staples was first known as a gangster rapper. But what he actually is, is a realist rapper. His music deals with violence in its most human form: ordinary, everyday, and eclipsing the vibrant sun of his native Long Beach, California. Staples isn’t about warmth; he’s deadpan and sardonic, cerebral and laconic, and cold and serene; “Momma met my daddy then they had me in the ghetto/Handed me a .38 and told me I was special,” he informs on “Magic,” from his new album, Ramona Park Broke My Heart

Holed up for nearly two weeks at Peter Gabriel’s residential Real World Studios in Bath, England, the group was working hard to finish recording Crawler, their fourth album, and perhaps their biggest leap to date from what any listener may consider a signature sound for the band.

On FM!, his 2018 collaboration with Kenny Beats, Vince Staples treaded familiar territory, presenting stories past and present of running around his favorite haunt, Long Beach’s Ramona Park, and the streets that orbit it, as California backyard party music that might get played on the radio. Kenny reprises his role as chief collaborator on Staples’ self-titled new album, and this time, his production creates a different kind of veil, as he pairs his cavernous 808s with sparse, heavily filtered samples, sometimes evoking Bon Iver (“Law of Averages”) or Passion Pit...
