Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

A24’s drama – and the distributor itself – enjoyed a huge Saturday afternoon at Film Independent’s 32nd annual Spirit Awards ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica.
Best feature winner Moonlight won six awards and took the plaudits on an afternoon that also sends best director winner Barry Jenkins to Sunday’s Oscars in high spirits and recognised Friday night’s César winner Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea in the lead acting categories.
Besides best feature and director, Moonlight won screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, cinematography for James Laxton, and editing for Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders.
The film started the ceremony as joint frontrunner with American Honey on six nominations and converted all six, including the previously announced Robert Altman Award. American Honey went away empty-handed.

You’d think that the Oscar race for Best Editing would be very much in play. After all, “Arrival” and “La La Land” took the Ace Awards for drama and comedy, respectively, while “Hacksaw Ridge” won the BAFTA.
But given the audacity of Best Picture frontrunner “La La Land” and the fact that editor Tom Cross previously won the Oscar for Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash,” the odds are with him again.
Still, with such a strong group of nominees, the craft awards could break unexpectedly. Each editor explores existential crises in different ways and creatively plays with time and space.
Here’s how the race is shaking out.
“La La Land”
With the bittersweet love story between Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian and Emma Stone’s Mia, Chazelle constructed a musical bridge between the past and the present — Hollywood as both dreamland and boulevard of broken dreams. It’s filled with flashbacks and fantasy sequences,...

When you talk to Jeff Bridges about one of his films, he won’t talk about himself. He’ll talk about everyone else. After scoring his seventh Oscar nomination — fourth in a supporting role — for his work as the crass but dedicated Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton in “Hell Or High Water,” Bridges spoke to TheWrap Tuesday morning about all the people who helped him craft his performance, from his co-star Gil Birmingham to screenwriter Taylor Sheridan all the way to the film’s editor, Jake Roberts. But before all of them, he talked about the real-life Texas Ranger who became the basis.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

When Thelma Schoonmaker won the first of her three Academy Awards for “Raging Bull,” she humbly told journalists that she believed she was being honored for work done by the director, Martin Scorsese.
“I won the Oscar for ‘Raging Bull’ for those fight sequences,” said Schoonmaker in a 1991 interview with Wide Angle/Closeup. “If you look at those fight sequences, those were so incredibly storyboarded and shot in an incredible way – that is the conception a good director has to bring.”

The editors are often credited with picking the eventual Oscar-winner. So let’s assume that this year’s top four rivals, “Arrival,” “La La Land,” “Manchester By the Sea” and “Moonlight,” will land nods, along with war movie “Hacksaw Ridge.”
On the other hand, perhaps tellingly, Oscar hopefuls “20th Century Women,” “Jackie,” “Fences,” “Lion,” “Loving,” and “Hidden Figures” did not land drama or comedy editing nods from the American Cinema Editors, which leaves them on the cusp for Best Picture.

Last year’s Best Editing field included “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but this decade that blockbuster and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” are the only two nominees that were not also Best Picture nominees. The safer bet is to stick with those contenders. Especially until someone actually sees this year’s “Star Wars” film, ‘Rogue One.’ [Nov 29]

Sheltered in my Los Angeles bubble, I can't believe that this crime movie had an accurate measure of the true pulse of the country. Texan outlaws rob banks to fight what appears to be a rigged system; the Texas Ranger who tracks them realizes that much of the population feels the same exact way. Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster lead a crime spree through a depressed, forgotten America. Hell or High Water Blu-ray + DVD Lionsgate 2016 / Color / 2:40 widescreen / 122 min. / Street Date November 8, 2016 / 19.96 Starring Ben Foster, Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges, Alberto Parker, Katy Mixon, Kevin Rankin, Marin Ireland, John-Paul Howard, Melanie Papalia. Director David Mackenzie talks about making Hell Or High Water with Chris Pine, and the state of modern cinema...
A blend of western and heist thriller, Hell Or High Water has one foot in the present and one in the past. Its rugged atmosphere recalls classic thrillers and dramas of the 1970s, yet its setting - among shuttered towns of a post-recession east Texas - is unmistakably modern. Its big skies and Stetsons recall classic westerns, yet its story, brilliantly written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) feels like a eulogy for a vanishing way of life.
Even the casting feels like a nod to both 70s and contemporary cinema. There are plenty of parallels between Hell Or High Water and Michael Cimino's 1974 thriller Thunderbolt And Lightfoot, not least the casting of Jeff Bridges. In Cimino's film, Bridges stole just about every scene as a live-wire outlaw...

On paper, “Brooklyn,” the story of a young Irish immigrant (Saoirse Ronan) torn between two men (Emory Cohen and Domhnall Gleeson) on two different continents, sounds like your typical love story. That’s until you realize that Gleeson’s character doesn’t even make an appearance until the last 30 minutes of the movie, by which time Cohen has already made a solid impression in viewer’s hearts. Yet “Brooklyn” isn’t just about a love triangle: rather, it’s about a young woman’s coming of age when she takes the long journey to a new world. And in our recent conversation (listen below), editor Jake Roberts explains how he and director John Crowley tackled this unique structure. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions “The thing about the film is that it’s last 20 minutes run about an act later than it would otherwise,...

John Crowley’s “Brooklyn” is currently delighting critics and audiences. Saoirse Ronan’s triumph yesterday at the New York Film Critics Circle is likely the beginning of a solid run for the film through Oscar season. The changing time periods, locations and moods required a sharp but subtle editor. Enter Jake Roberts, an up-and-comer in his field who I recently had the chance to catch up with. Q: When did you come aboard “Brooklyn”? A: I met John [Crowley, the director] in November of 2013, about 4 months before shooting. John had cut all his previous films with the same editor, Lucia Zucchetti, and fortunately for me, she was busy so he needed someone else. The producers (who I’d worked with before) put in a good word for me and fortunately that led to my getting hired. Q: To what extent were you involved during filming? A: I was near the location throughout but...

It’s been rumored for months now and we reported about it a couple of weeks ago, but it appears to be official now that Scott Hall aka Razor Ramon will be the next inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2014. The announcement is expected on WWE Monday Night Raw from Brooklyn tonight, though the reveal has been confirmed early by the following newspaper advert;
A report from PWInsider suggests that the current plan is for members of The Kliq to induct Hall. That infamous group included Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman (X-Pac). No word if all of them will present Hall or if it will be just one of them. If it was one of them, Nash appears to be the most likely since he two formed the Outsiders together. However, if all...
