Crowded House have dropped their first new music in more than a decade with their new single, “Whatever You Want.” The accompanying video stars Mac DeMarco.
In the endearingly goofy Nina Ljeti-directed clip, DeMarco awakens on his couch half-dressed, contemplating the night before. It appears he is suffering from a relatable imposter syndrome and seems to feel he bombed, and perhaps got bombed, in front of a lot of people. As he studies himself in a mirror disapprovingly, he receives words of encouragement from a statue. Other items — including a garden gnome,...

There have been a few father-son dynasties of note in rock, but not many who’ve actually made an album together as equals. A new entry into those rare annals is arriving in the form of Neil and Liam Finn’s debut as a duo after many solo albums, “Lightsleeper.” The September release is being heralded with their first music video, for the song “Back to Life.”
Variety has an exclusive premiere of the clip, filmed at Los Angeles’ Largo club in an afternoon leading up to their recent album-preview show there (watch it above).
Variety sat down with Neil and Liam while they were both in town for the show and video shoot — a rare confluence since Liam, 34, now lives in L.A. with his wife and their baby, while Neil, who just turned 60, is a commuter from their native New Zealand. The dad of the duo will be...

As we gear up for an awards season ripe with many quality queer films, it’s important to remember smaller successes who may get lost in the shuffle. Lgbt-themed film festivals Outfest and Frameline kicked off the summer, while New York’s own NewFest wrapped up last week. It’s always thrilling to see a gay film get awards attention, like the kind lavished on Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” and foreign language contender “Bpm (Beats Per Minute).” But it’s been a banner year for nuanced queer films across the board, and especially ones from queer-identified filmmakers.
From up-and-comers making splashy debuts, to longtime favorites who have stepped up their game, the filmmakers on this list represent a varied swath of not only the Lgbt spectrum, but vastly different artistic styles. That means they have the potential to reach different audiences — and open up perspectives across demographics.

Line-up includes new features by Dario Argento, Jacob Tierney and Fantasia alumni Rob Grant and Kerry Prior.
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the Off-Frontières selection for this year’s Frontières International Co-Production Market.
The line-up of 12 projects features projects from Canada, Mexico and the UK, among others, and includes the next features from Dario Argento and Jacob Tierney as well as follow-up features from Fantasia alumni Rob Grant, Pat Kiely, Kerry Prior and Olivier Sabino.
Stephanie Trepanier, Frontières creative director, told Screen: “The Off-Frontières line-up of project always allows us to include more projects we believe in, but couldn’t fit in the official 12-projects selection because of quota limitations or because the project is more advanced than the scope we set for the official Frontières line-up.
“I’m particularly happy that this selection allowed us to feature four more feature projects by Quebec talents, as well as a Canadian co-production to be directed...

Pearl Jam celebrated their 20th anniversary in style over the weekend with their two-day fest, "PJ20." Held at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, on Saturday and Sunday, Eddie Vedder and his musical brethren triumphantly ended the holiday weekend with a massive three-hour set, according to Billboard.
The show reportedly featured all of the classics – “Alive,” “Jeremy,” “Even Flow,” “Daughter” – but the bevy of special guests is what truly showed Pearl Jam’s influence and musical legacy. Scratching each other’s backs, the fest became a hodge-podge of onstage collabs. Vedder showed his appreciation for the opening acts: adding vocals and percussion to the set by Liam Finn, duetting with John Doe for his tune “Golden State,” mellowing out on Glen Hansard’s “Falling Slowly” (a song from Hansard’s Irish indie flick "Once") and rocking out with the Strokes on “Juicebox.”
Everyone obliged...

Liam Finn recently released a new video for “Cold Feet” from his latest album, Fomo. The New Zealander finds himself in a literal interpretation of the song when he plays the part of an unlucky Eskimo trying to survive on the tundra with his wife. Though the video is a much more lighthearted venture than Portugal. The Man’s recent arctic endeavor, a puppet seal does lose its head....

Liam Finn’s moody but mannered debut featured a song called “The Shadow Of Your Man.” Why be coy, though? I’ll Be Lightning bore the musical DNA of Elliott Smith, but Liam himself bears the genetic material of Crowded House and Split Enz frontman Neil Finn. His sophomore effort, Fomo, is a valiant, largely successful attempt to carve out a unique identity by dint of buzzing guitars, overdubbed harmonies, and busy production. It helps that Finn has never been as convincingly unhinged as he is on “The Struggle,” where he wails “Are you worth the trouble?” over a seesawing ...

When Liam Finn sings, “I knew I couldn’t have you / right from the very start / and that’s why you see right through me / the boy who ate your heart,” during Fomo‘s earliest moments, he sounds humbled, but also resigned to his place in an existence often fraught with anxiety, obsession, maladjustment. It’s a good look on him, the Kiwi songwriter and son of Crowded House/Split Enz music vet, Neil. Fomo isn’t as long or excitable as Finn’s 2007 debut, I’ll Be Lightning, nor is at as aggressive or raucous as his live show, but that suits...
