Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man) was best known as an actor when he was hired to write the screenplay for a project that sounded like an insane idea: a 23-years-later sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. But somehow, Holland and director Richard Franklin managed to deliver a Psycho II (watch it Here) that is a worthy follow-up to the original. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Holland has published – through Holland House Entertainment – a 176 page book called Oh Mother, What Have You Done?, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Psycho II.
Authored by Tom Holland and containing unpublished memoirs by late Psycho II director Richard Franklin and conversations with the film’s editor Andrew London, Oh Mother, What Have You Done? offers fans a unique
glimpse into the continuation of the beloved Psycho film franchise, which created nightmares for millions of
people showering worldwide.

Genre television is our favorite, so it's no surprise that we wound up with two different lists! If your favorite genre show didn't appear on one or the other, it might be upcoming on the decade's best shows list!
Please remember that with have almost two dozen favorites lists that we couldn't showcase every show on every list, so we parsed them out a bit to make it more fun.
And these lists are not in any particular order. They're in the order the entries were received by TV Fanatic staff, so don't read into them!
To qualify, a show that began in another decade had to be airing during the decade, run a larger number of seasons from 2010 through 2019 if it started before 2010 or run the entire decade. Here we go!

"I think there's something wrong with me," announces Norman Bates as he pulls one of his mother's floral dresses in close for a blissful hug. If there's any indication "Bates Motel" will be fully embracing its "Psycho" roots in its much anticipated third season, it's definitely this haunting image at the end of the newly released teaser below. A&E has dropped two clips foreshadowing the dark psychodrama to come in the upcoming season of their hit drama, which premieres just one week from tonight at 9:00pm Et/Pt. Creators Carlton Cuse, Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano have done a tremendous job establishing the roots of Norman's fractured psyche in previous seasons, but it seems Season 3 will finally make the jump and give audiences the Hitchcockian Bates they've been waiting for. "Bates Motel" stars Emmy nominee Vera Farmiga opposite Freddie Highmore, Olivia Cook, Max Thieriot and Kenny Johnson. Watch the new teases below: Read.

Anthony Cipriano ended 2013 on a very high note. Bates Motel - the Psycho prequel he created for A&E - was the “second most-watched new cable drama of the year”(behind History’s Vikings) and was picked up by the network for a second season. The writer’s having a good start to 2014, too. The Wrap reports Amazon Studios has ordered a one-hour television pitch from Cipriano for a project entitled Sun Valley, a modern-day crime drama about a violent street thug and his “overprotective and power-hungry mother,” who both create an “empire built form the vast cultural fabric, a corrupt police department, and the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles.” 300’s Bernie Goldmann is also reportedly on board to executive produce. A&E's drama "Bates Motel" is, at least in theory, a prequel to the classic 1960 film "Psycho." It's centered around the creaky motel of the title with the iconic house looming behind it, and it has for a main character a sweet but troubled teenage boy named Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) whose close relationship with his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) is more than a little complicated. It build out backstory that's only hinted at in Alfred Hitchcock's film, filling in Norma's past romantic entanglements and introducing an older brother to Norman, the brooding Dylan (Max Thieriot). But "Bates Motel" won't ever meet up with the film that inspired it -- it can't. The TV series, developed by "Lost" executive producer Carlton Cuse, "Friday Night Lights" writer Kerry Ehrin and Anthony Cipriano, is set in the present day, a world of cell phones, manga-reading high schoolers and a regional drug...

Bates Motel, Season 1, Episode 1: “First You Dream, Then You Die”
Written by Anthony Cipriano
Directed by Tucker Gates
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on A&E
In 1987, a year after the second Psycho sequel hit the big screen, Universal looked to take the franchise to television by turning it into a weekly anthology series. This was not unusual for the time as the late 80s and early 90s churned out an abundance of horror related shows such as Freddy’s Nightmares and Friday the 13th. A television spin-off of Hitchcock’s 1960 masterpiece, titled Bates Motel, originally aired as a pilot but due to low ratings, producers shelved the idea. In early 2012, A&E announced that a new TV series also titled Bates Motel was in development; later on it was confirmed that the show was picked up for a 10 episode first season. However, it has nothing to do with the failed 1987 TV pilot.

The A&E drama Bates Motel is a critical conundrum, and after watching the first three episodes, I’m still not sure how to untangle it. Created by Anthony Cipriano and executive-produced by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights), Bates Motel is an origin story for, or prequel to, Psycho — and yet it isn’t. Like Robert Bloch’s novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s same-named film, it revolves around a troubled young man named Norman Bates (Freddy Highmore, who played Charlie in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). But where Norman’s mother was, um, an absent presence in earlier versions, on this show she’s very much alive, played by Vera Farmiga in a performance that seems at once meticulously studied and disarmingly “real” (a Streep-like vibe); Ma Bates has both a name (Norma!) and a complex, often unnerving personality. The Norma-Norman relationship isn...

“Who’s gonna rent a room in the rape/murder hotel?” smokin’ hot Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) rhetorically asks her introverted son Norman (Freddie Highmore) after a grizzly scene has just unfolded in their creaky house. Based on the first episode of “Bates Motel,” which was unveiled March 11 at SXSW, a number of clunkily-drawn characters will probably swing by the infamous rest-stop, less in the service of true creepiness and more for generic thrills. The A&E series premieres on March 18 (iTunes preview here), and is produced and written in part by Carlton Cuse of “Lost” and Anthony Cipriano. It is a modern-day backstory of Hitchcock’s “Psycho” killer, cross-dresser and troubled soul Norman Bates. After 17-year-old Norman finds his father dead in their family’s basement from a mysterious cause, he and Mother -- suspiciously unphased by the discovery of her husband’s lifeless body -- relocate to the remote Seafarer Motel,...

Charming Peter Llewellyn Davies in Finding Neverland. Plucky, kind Charlie Bucket in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. A young Nigel Slater in Toast. Heroic Astro Boy. A&E must have something special on their hands with Bates Motel, the prequel series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic Psycho which will follow Norman Bates' formative years. The cable network will begin preproduction and casting for the show immediately, bypassing the traditional pilot stage, and ordered 10-episodes for the series that will delve into Bates’ dark, twisted backstory from childhood through his teen years and will chronicle how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged Norman, shaping him in a serial killer. The series is being compred to a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville.
Anthony Cipriano penned the pilot script, but this project really gained steam when former Lost show-runner Carlton Cuse joined the the production in March. With Friday Night Lights' Kerry Ehrin also on board, it's no wonder A&E is willing to get a jump on this series.

Back in January we brought you word that development had started on a TV series providing a new back story for Psycho's Norman Bates. The suits at TV network A&E are obviously pleased with what they've been seeing in the meantime, because they've now ordered a full ten-episodes of Bates Motel from Universal, without bothering with the usual formality of a pilot. What's the basis for A&E's suprising faith? In short, it's Carlton Cuse, who's installed himself at the Bates Motel as an executive producer. Cuse was co-showrunner of Lost with Damon Lindelof, and also co-wrote about a third of its episodes, so he knows how to handle the smooth production of a vast enterprise, but he also knows weird, which sounds like the right fit for a series that's apparently going for some sort of Twin Peaks vibe.Anthony Cipriano wrote the script that kicked everything off,...

Carlton Cuse, writer and executive producer of "Lost," will executive produce this series alongside "Friday Night Lights" writer Kerry Ehrin. "Bates Motel" is the creation of Anthony Cipriano, who scripted Michael Cuesta's "Twelve and Holding" and wrote the pilot for this series. The Hollywood Reporter calls the series "a cross between 'Twin Peaks' and 'Smallville,'" while per the network's own description it as "a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates' relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit. Viewers will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn firsthand how Norma helped...

It's a very good time to be an Alfred Hitchcock fan these days (and if you're not a fan, you're doing it wrong). Not only are there two feature films on the way -- the BBC/HBO production "The Girl" with Toby Jones and Sienna Miller and Fox Searchlight's "Hitchcock" with Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and many many more -- but on September 25th, Universal will be dropping a 15 movie strong boxset "Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection" on Blu-ray. But if all that isn't enough to sate your appetite, Hitch is headed to the small screen as well. Sort of.
First revealed earlier this year, "Lost" and "Friday Night Lights" folks Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin, having been working on "Bates Motel," a prequel of sorts to "Psycho." Well, A&E must really like what they've been seeing as THR reports, they've skipped the whole pilot stage,...

Earlier this week we learned that AMC, was developing a series based on Scorsese’s mob drama Goodfellas. This week comes word that A&E has also decided to grab a piece of the big-to-little screen fanfare by ordering Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho to series. The series will be written as a prequel to the events surrounding the original film and delve into the deconstruction of Norman’s mind. No cast has been announced, but through THR we learned that Anthony Cipriano (Twelve and Holding) penned the pilot script.

There seems to have been a lot of interesting TV shows announced this week. First there was a Dracula series, then a Green Arrow series, now we've learned that the A&E network is developing a series that will play out as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Psycho.
The series will be called Bates Motel, and it will "delve into how Norman Bates’ dark, twisted backstory from childhood through his teen years and will chronicle how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged Norman, helping shape the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history."
Now this is a series I can get behind 100 percent! I love the idea of seeing Bates' backstory! There's a lot of potential for a drama series like this, and I already can't wait to see what it will bring us.

Norman Bates kinda single-handedly killed the whole "mom and pop" roadside motel industry when he went above-and-beyond his duties as proprietor of the Bates Motel and murdered the hell out of Janet Leigh in the shower. That's bad news for anyone who wants to rinse and repeat, but good business for all the Hampton Inns of the world.
Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" shocked audiences with its eerie black and white vision of the mentally disturbed Bates, the screen's first slasher. His rather "complex" relationship with his "mother" turned into one of the great horror movie twists, but the classic's stark suspense was strip-mined by Universal for three sequels (all starring Anthony Perkins) in the '80s and a shot-for-shot remake in the '90s.
According to Deadline, Universal TV and cable network A&E are going back to the well to fetch another pail of crazy as they develop "Bates Motel,...
