The story of the development of Call of Duty Warzone is one of late nights and an expansive vision that was not an easy sell. Starting development in early 2018, the Modern Warfare and Warzone team had an uphill battle ahead of them.
But the result was a game that reached over one hundred million players worldwide, and is still a roaring success to this day, over three years after its initial release.

The creation of Call of Duty Warzone did not come without its challenges.
In an article from the Washington Post, Patrick Kelly shared his experience making the popular battle royale with Dave Stohl, co-head of Infinity Ward. Infinity Ward started development on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sometime in 2016, soon after the release of that year’s game, Infinite Warfare.

Stress test, well, as the phrase suggests, could be stressing. It gets intense when playtesters are too skilled. It was kind of the case with Call of Duty: Warzone, the popular battle royale title. Infinity Ward co-studio heads Dave Stohl and Patrick Kelly shared the story behind the development of the game, especially touching on the creation of the original Verdansk.
The game may have gotten bad in the eyes of some fans, but it certainly changed the way enthusiasts played battle royale games. They also did something that almost killed one of their least favorite activities in the game: camping. Players were rewarded for moving around Verdansk, which prompted them to get out there on the battlefield.
‘Pro-Level’ Players Raised the Bar for Testing in Call of Duty

Call of Duty may be going through a rough phase, but it has enjoyed some peaks in the past. That’s mainly because of the series’ ability to adapt to any kind of trend, so it was natural for it to try its hand at the battle royale craze. Made popular by games like Pubg and Fortnite, it didn’t take long for Infinity Ward to unleash its own take on the genre in the form of Warzone, and there was one aspect that differentiated it from the rest of the competition: its balls-to-the-wall action.

Activision officially released Call of Duty Warzone on March 10th, four years ago, bringing a new free-to-play, cross-platform battle royale title that brought together over 150 players. The title included a lot of fan-favorite maps, one of which is Rebirth Island, which recently got included in Call of Duty (Cod) Warzone Mobile, along with another fan-favorite map, Verdansk.
Fans now rate Verdansk rather highly but things could have been quite different if initial plans had gone ahead. Verdansk is based on the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, but when work began on Warzone, Donetsk wasn’t the first city considered for inspiration.
Donetsk Was Not Call of Duty’s Franchise Director’s First Choice of City for Warzone
Call of Duty Warzone could have debuted a massive city based on a city from Afghanistan.
