TORONTO -- The Canadian Cable Television Assn. said it is closing up shop after 50 years because of unbridgeable competing interests among its membership. "The board's decision was only made after difficult deliberations and was based on the competitive realities of the emerging broadband world," CCTA president Michael Hennessy said Friday. The CCTA represents 75 cable operators serving 7.3 million subscribers. But Shaw Communications accounts for 2.1 million of those subscribers, and Rogers Communications, the country's largest cablecaster, another 2.4 million.

TORONTO -- Canadian cablecasters said Wednesday that they will ask the country's TV regulator to admit three new foreign-language services onto Canadian TV schedules. The move follows the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in December bowing to pressure from the federal government to allow more international, foreign-language channels to launch their own digital signals in Canada via satellite. The Canadian Cable Telecommunications Assn., representing major cablecasters, said it will ask the CRTC to add Radio Television Portugal International (RTPi), New Tang Dynasty Television and the Phoenix North American Chinese Channel to the list of eligible satellite services. "The CRTC has opened the door to offering consumers more choice in services, and we intend to take advantage of this opportunity over the coming months," Cable Telecommunications Assn. president Michael Hennessy said.

TORONTO -- Canadian cablecasters and conventional broadcasters on Friday clashed over a proposal to tax U.S. TV signals to subsidize homegrown production. The Canadian Cable Television Assn., representing major cablecasters, criticized a call by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, representing private broadcasters, for a levy on foreign TV services airing here. "This proposal would not only raise consumer prices for cable and satellite services, but would needlessly create another trade irritant with our neighbors to the south," said CCTA president Michael Hennessy.
