Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions today released the first look trailer for the world premiere West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, taking the moment to also announce an extension into 2025 of the production’s London run.
This past March, casting notices for a Broadway production suggested a New York run for Stranger Things: The First Shadow is in the works.
In the new trailer, the telekinetic Creel (played on the West End by Louis McCartney) is depicted in a sort of prequel to the events of the Netflix TV series. Specifically, a terrified Creel is just beginning to suspect his gifts, and seems none too thrilled. “I’m Henry Creel. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m Henry Creel.”

Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the U.K. stage play based on the hit Netflix series, has dropped another trailer looking at the drama’s biggest villain, Henry Creel.
“It’s not real. I’m normal,” an anguished Creel, the telekinetic boy played by Louis McCartney, repeatedly declares in the latest teaser for the stage play. Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-director Justin Martin, the play has been extended to 2025 in London’s West End, as reports point to a possible transfer and premiere on Broadway next year.
The 1959-set prequel centers around younger versions of characters in the Netflix Stranger Things series characters, including Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams), Joyce Maldonado ( Isabella Pappas), Jim Hopper Jr. (Oscar Lloyd) and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley).
The latest footage offers an origin story of how Henry Creel became number one, aka “001.” Creel is the younger version of the Jamie Campbell Bower...

Andrew Scott has been awarded Best Actor at the 33rd Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. The win makes the Irish actor the first performer to be handed top honors from both of the UK’s national critics bodies.
Scott won the Theatre Awards award for his performance in Vanya, a one-man Chekov adaptation during which Scott plays eight different characters in conversation with each other. Scott landed the same award late last year from the Film Critics Circle, also under the UK Critics’ Circle umbrella for his performance in Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic feature All Of Us Strangers.
Sarah Hemming, the chief theater critic of the Financial Times, described Scott’s performance in Vanya as “tremendously moving, dialing up the empathy at the heart of that great, humane play and at the heart of live theatre” when she presented him with the award.

Exclusive: Louis McCartney describes himself as “a West End baby” because before he was cast to play boyish-looking monster Henry Creel in the Stranger Things stage show The First Shadow, he’d never performed on stage in his life.
“They were coaching me how to speak properly, how to project my voice,” McCartney says of the countless recalls he endured during the auditioning process.
The key was: Could McCartney play “the sweet little by whose mum loved him” who also happens to be “a killer” who’s “psychiatric at heart.”
McCartney nails it all with one of the most breathtaking debut performances in the West End.
The show’s director, Stephen Daldry, remembers seeing McCartney out of the corner of his eye during an open casting call. The lad from Belfast was sitting quietly in a corner when Daldry remarked to casting director Jessica Ronane and dialect coach William Conacher,...

While much time still stands before the conclusion to the Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” Netflix series, with Season 5 awaiting a deal for its actors, the prequel play — “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” — will give audiences a glimpse further into the past and the origins of the Upside Down.
Set in 1959 Hawkins, the play will focus on the arrival of Henry Creel to “a regular town with regular worries.” Teenage Jim Hopper, Bob Newby and Joyce Maldonado also star, as does a younger Dr. Martin Brenner (Patrick Vaill), who began the cruel experiments on Young Henry.
As with any new iteration of “Stranger Things,” there’s a new crucial character — this time, it’s Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams). There is also a Principal Newby (Matthew Pigeon), but that figure is of less importance to the plot.

This sweet funny feature debut from Johnny Barrington set on the Isle of Lewis with shades of Bill Forsyth has been chosen to open the Edinburgh film festival
Skye-born film-maker Johnny Barrington got a Bafta nomination in 2013 for his short film Tumult and now he opens the Edinburgh film festival with his feature debut: a whimsical coming-of-age drama with a touch of Bill Forsyth, set on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It is a beautiful, remote landscape whose sweeping emptiness is interestingly used by Barrington and his director of photography Ruben Woodin Dechamps as a blank canvas for gentle flights of fancy.
The result is a likeable, sweet-natured and often funny film, though straying a bit close to away-with-the-fairies tweeness and a bit uncertain on the subject of whether organised religion is bad or not. Louis McCartney and Ella Lily Hyland give very intelligent and sympathetic performances as Dondo and Sas,...

Dondo’s dad is dead. That’s one of the first things we learn in writer-director Johnny Barrington’s spry, offbeat debut feature “Silent Roar” — this year’s Edinburgh fest opener. This information is delivered by Paddy the Priest, a preacher with shrewd eyes and wild hair. Standing on the doorstep, addressing an audience of the late fisherman’s widow and teenage son, Paddy intones, “It must be coming up a year now since he was taken by the waves. Fishing on the Sabbath as he was, I hear.” Technically, Dondo’s dad is missing at sea, but despite the atmosphere of religious conviction that hangs over this small Scottish island community, nobody has much faith in the possibility of his survival.
Dondo, however, is a dreamer. His father’s fate hasn’t quenched his thirst for the ocean. A keen surfer with a light and likeable optimism about him,...

Debut feature Silent Roar, ‘a teenage tale of surfing, sex and hellfire’ takes the gala slot, marking a remarkable turnaround for the festival which appeared doomed to closure last October
The Edinburgh international film festival has announced the opening film for its 2023 edition, months after the shock news that the long-running event’s existence was in doubt after its organisers, Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), shut down abruptly in October and called in administrators.
