The most interesting and genuine instant emotional connections people form can fascinatingly be with people they barely know, or aren’t even entirely aware about. That unexpected mental connection can drastically change and lead their lives in more positive and constructive ways, even if they’re not fully aware of the other person’s subtle influence. That moving bond is the enticing lesson featured in director Brin Hill’s new independent romance drama, ‘In Your Eyes,’ which had its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. The most genuine emotional connections people form are often with people they barely know, or aren’t even entirely about, as they don’t hold any lingering judgments about them, based on their past actions. Already available to watch on Vimeo (for $5), Joss Whedon’s newest story of supernatural romance, "In Your Eyes," now has a trailer. The soft, pretty images reveal two loners on opposite sides of the country -- played by Zoe Kazan (writer and star of "Ruby Sparks") and Michael Stahl-David ("Cloverfield") -- who can somehow see through each other’s eyes. They become fast friends, coaching each other through life, and presumably eventually fall in love, wanting to abandon the gimmick for the real thing. Directed by Brin Hill, "In Your Eyes" appears to be a standard and sweet romance, which will have us rooting for the two to finally come together. In his lukewarm review for Indiewire, Eric Kohn sums it up thus: "It's cheesy and slight, but persistently smart and entertaining within those narrow parameters." You can read more about its method of release (as well as watch Whedon...

Joss Whedon's In Your Eyes gets rush release on Vimeo
Fresh from minting a billion with The Avengers, Joss Whedon's blockbuster rehab continues. First came his fleet-footed adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, shot in 12 days in Whedon's home in Santa Monica and proving the play's place as a precursor to screwball. Now, via release on Vimeo, we have In Your Eyes, a Whedon script directed by Brin Hill and starring Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David as two strangers who share an inexplicable telepathic bond. Think of it as a rom-com version of The Shining, or Nicholas Sparks on a macro-budget.

Joss Whedon's new movie, In Your Eyes, was released online for $5 this week. Here's our review...
Ousting the Peter Gabriel song from the top of search engine results, Bellwether Pictures second film (after 2012's Much Ado About Nothing) is notable for its release strategy (digital rental) and for being from a new script by Joss Whedon (with Brin Hill directing). Many will doubtless choose to rent it for this reason alone. For those who are on the fence, consider the following:
Say 'Paranormal Romance' and there's still a residual image of a greased-up buff guy standing next to a wolf on a book cover. Say 'Romantic Comedy' and there's still an image of two self-obsessed own-fart-sniffers trampling over other people's lives to get married. Whedon has concocted a paranormal romantic comedy, though the emphasis is on the romance.
Romantic comedies are, by their very nature,...

I’m honestly not totally sure how to write about In Your Eyes, the new movie that Joss Whedon surprise-released online like he’s Beyonce. It’s the second feature from director Brin Hill, and he did a really great job with this odd little supernatural romance that was written by Whedon himself. The movie opens with a scene that focuses on two kids. One, a girl named Rebecca, is having a snow day, the other, a boy named Dylan, is at school somewhere warm. The scene cuts between the two — she’s timid and trying to sled, he’s smart but hangs with a bad crowd — until she loses control of her sled and crashes into a tree, which knocks him unconscious, thousands of miles away. Then it picks up maybe twenty years later when she is a doctor’s wife and he is an ex-con on parole, and...

Joss Whedon wrote and produced a sweet little supernatural romance for your geeky pleasure, and you don’t even have to pirate it: he released it instantly on Vimeo. I’m “biast” (pro): love Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has a new movie. You cannot see it in theaters… but you can rent it right now, online, at Vimeo, from anywhere on the planet, for the ridiculously low price of five American bucks. Is it worth five bucks? It sure is. It would be worth twice that to see it on a big screen, but this is one of those little indie-style dramedies that hardly ever end up on big screens anymore. It has no superheroes, and it has no space cowboys.
What it does have are two gently, identifiably screwed-up 30-ish folks in Rebecca...

One movie premiering this week at the Tribeca Film Festival that has gotten a lot of attention is In Your Eyes. The reason isn't necessarily because of great buzz (though it's getting decent reviews) or who stars in it (Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David) or who directed it (relative unknown Brin Hill) or even because it was just announced as being immediately available to rent through Vimeo On Demand following its debut in New York. The biggest reason for its attention is who wrote it: Joss Whedon. It's not that common these days for writers to be the main draw for a movie, not unless they're also the director. Consistently notable scribes like Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Sofia Coppola, Mike Leigh, David Mamet and many more who also helm...

How Whedon-esque is Joss Whedon's new film, In Your Eyes? The film, which premiered last night at the Tribeca Film Festival and is now available for rental online, was written and produced by the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator and Avengers director, but he's not the director — Brin Hill is. When Vulture caught up with Hill and the cast (which includes Zoe Kazan, Nikki Reed, Mark Feuerstein, and Michael Stahl-David in a breakout performance) at the premiere and after-party at China Blue, we had to get to the bottom of this question.First, there was the level of involvement, which Hill graciously assured us was of the highest order, although Whedon's main direction was, "Make a good movie!" Hill laughed. He added, "We did the table reads at Joss's house," where Whedon last shot Much Ado About Nothing. "So we were walking on the ghosts of Much Ado. He...

Joss Whedon is no stranger to independent distribution. This is the man who, along with his team, turned Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog into a big online success. He’s looking to the web again for a new project, releasing his company Bellwether Pictures’ film In Your Eyes online for the princely sum of $5.In the video (above) he sent to the Tribeca Film Festival to support the drama’s premiere, Whedon laid out the basics of how to access it online: it’s a simple matter of going to the website and paying the fee.In Your Eyes, which Whedon wrote and produced but which was actually directed by Brin Hill, imagines a psychic connection between a sweet, bored housewife in a wintry East Coast town (Zoe Kazan) and an ex-con in New Mexico looking to make a fresh start (Michael Stahl-David). The two have never met but are spiritually connected.

As a guy who has covered features my whole career, I find it distressing that the only time feature folks do risky things seems to be when they are making TV projects. Because theaters and studios can’t figure it out, films are frozen in an arcane system where you wait six months for a DVD and those who don’t want to wait, or see it in a theater, have no choice but to steal it. When they work in TV, these writer-directors play in a sandbox that gives viewers the ability to see that work, whenever and wherever they want to. Joss Whedon premiered a Brin Hill-directed micro-budget relationship film In Your Eyes at Tribeca, and announced right after that he’s making it available on Vimeo for five bucks. With his talons firmly entrenched in the Marvel franchise, Joss Whedon's influence on contemporary popular culture has arguably never been stronger. Still, even as he prepares a second "Avengers" movie for the masses, Whedon remains known not for the grand scale of his productions but the way people talk and act within them. No matter how many hundreds of effects it took to simulate the destruction of Manhattan in "The Avengers," the movie worked to a large degree because of Whedon's persistently funny and vibrant screenplay. With this talent in place, it's no wonder that Whedon founded Bellwether Pictures, a micro budget studio committed to small scale productions — the first of which, a black-and-white adaptation of "Much Ado About Nothing" shot in the director's home post-"Avengers," showed exactly how far outside the contemporary Hollywood tradition his interest lie. In Whedon's latest movie, "In Your Eyes," which he wrote and executive produced, two strangers on opposite coasts share a metaphysical, inexplicable connection. The first three minutes of the movie, directed by Brin Hill, has been released ahead of its premiere this weekend at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In the opening scene, a girl named Rebecca is sledding, while a boy named Dylan is attending school. As Rebecca races down the hill, suddenly Dylan can see through her eyes. And when Rebecca crashes into a tree, Dylan experiences it, too.
Most of the movie follows Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) and Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) as adults, when they become aware of their unique, supernatural link.

Joss Whedon was a busy man with The Avengers. But in between the writing and the shooting and the wrangling of a real, live Hulk (I’m assuming that was the real Hulk, right?), he also shot Much Ado About Nothing on his days off. Apparently Much Ado wasn’t enough, because Whedon actually had a third project in the works at the same time. In the early months of 2012, Whedon’s screenplay for In Your Eyes was being shot in New Hampshire. Not by Whedon, mind you, but by Brin Hill – and before you say, “Who?” Hill is known mostly for writing the competitive b-boy flick Battle of the Year. Somehow, Whedon found a way to oversee the production anyway, even if it was just through a tenuous psychic connection. Which, conveniently enough, is the very same plot device at the center of In Your Eyes. Starring Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) and Michael Stahl-David (the lead...

Joss Whedon‘s next movie as a director is about as mainstream and big-budget as movies get. But his next release as a writer is more Much Ado About Nothing than Avengers. Directed by Brin Hill, In Your Eyes follows two people (Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David) who’ve never met and are separated by thousands of miles. Nevertheless, […]

Joss Whedon is currently globetrotting and filming "Avengers: Age of Ultron," but back in the old U.S.A., a new film written by the "Buffy" mastermind is about to premiere. "In Your Eyes" is one of several films debuting this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, but you may not have heard about it. Director Brin Hill filmed the sci-fi romance more than a year ago. The movie tells the story of Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) and ...

Joss Whedon fans waiting for "Avengers: Age of Ultron", here's something to tide you over. Back at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, Indiewire spoke to Whedon about his independent production company, Bellwether, and its first completed feature, his adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Whedon mentioned that Bellwether started another feature before "Much Ado," and it's finally premiering at Tribeca Film Festival. "In Your Eyes," a science-fiction romance, stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David as two people who can feel what the other is feeling despite not knowing each other and living on opposite sides of the country. Written by Whedon and directed by Brin Hill, it sounds like an ambitious, unusual love story, and Entertainment Weekly has released the first three minutes of the film online. The film establishes its conceit quickly and succinctly, showing a connection between the characters that reaches all the way back to childhood.

You would think with all things Marvel on his plate, Joss Whedon wouldn't have time for much else, but you'd be wrong. Last year he dropped the indie Shakespearean tale "Much Ado About Nothing," and now he's headed into the Tribeca Film Festival as the writer and executive producer of the metaphysical romance "In Your Eyes." And today we have a little treat for you from the film. Produced by Kai Cole and Michael Roiff and directed by Brin Hill, the film stars Zoe Kazan, Michael Stahl-David, Nikki Reed, Mark Feuerstein, Steve Harris and Jennifer Grey in the tale that follows a sheltered East Coast housewife and an ex-con and waitress in New Mexico who all connect in ways they couldn't imagine. Weaving the movie together is composer Tony Morales ("Hatfields & McCoys," "The Bag Man"), and below you can listen to his evocative "Break Up" from the soundtrack, helping to power this unique film.

Hey, look, it’s film festival time again! (It’s always film festival time, much like it’s always awards season time.) This time around, the films are unfurling at New York City’s own Tribeca Film Festival, and two of our very own NYC-based scribblers are on the ground to cover the best of what the festival has to offer. As ever, the festival offers a robust programming slate of brand-new premieres, holdovers from other festivals around the world (we recommend titles like In Your Eyes, Chef, and Begin Again, if you’re looking to play catch up), and some uniquely compelling titles just daring you to try them out (one word: zombeavers). The festival kicks off tonight with the premiere of the Nas documentary, Time Is Illmatic, and runs until Sunday, April 27th. For these next few days, Lower Manhattan will be jumping with the festival and its many offerings, and...

The Tribeca Film Festival began as a way for New York to rebuild culturally after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001. For the first time since then, the area around Ground Zero is dominated by a sparkly, newly finished Freedom Tower, which represents so much more than the city’s resilience and recovery. The Tribeca festival played a small, but not insignificant, role in that recovery, inviting artists and film lovers to the city and reassuring New Yorkers that life can be beautiful even in the darkest of days.

Writer-director Brin Hill is bringing his first feature since 2008 to Tribeca this year, after working as a writer on films like "Won't Back Down" and "Battle of the Year." Looking to Steven Soderbergh for inspiration and working with writer Joss Whedon ("The Avengers," "The Cabin in the Woods," and "Toy Story"), Hill is excited for the Tribeca audience reception of "In Your Eyes." Tell us about yourself: I was a kid in Boston and a teenager in Santa Monica, from salty to sunshine, as if were. I’ve always been a filmmaker, but I’m also a recovering B-Boy and record digger, a decent two-guard who played college hoops, a creator of some cool branded entertainment, a teller of humorous stories about my seminal Little League experiences over a couple Jamesons, and a guy who nerds out on pulp and weird fiction. I’m excited for Tribeca audiences to see "In Your Eyes,...
