It was definitely an evening of “soul” at the second annual Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, as the Pixar film “Soul” and the Latvian film “Blizzard of Souls” took the top prizes for outstanding original scores for 2020 films.
The “Soul” composing trio of Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste won for outstanding original score for a studio film, their second such prize in 48 hours after winning the Golden Globe Sunday night. Should it maintain this momentum through other ceremonies in the weeks to come, “Soul” could be the film to beat at Oscar time.
Batiste, music director for TV’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” contributed the jazz material for the story about an aspiring jazz pianist whose life is cut short by an accident. Reznor and Ross wrote the dramatic score. Reznor and Ross, who were also nominated this year for “Mank,” are best known for their Nine...

Patton Oswalt and Meredith Salenger are on cloud nine.
On Saturday, the duo tied the knot in front of family and friends at the Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles and could not be more grateful for their new life together.
“I’ve only ever felt that level of joy once before in my life, and it was so profound and perfect it felt greedy to ever wish for it again,” Oswalt, 48, exclusively tells People in this week’s issue. “But I did, so now all I can do is show Meredith a level of gratitude and love that’s...

Tonight's elimination/performances show, kicked off with a group performance from the remaining dancers. It was a chessboard inspired number ,choreographed by Christopher “Pharside” Jennings and Krystal “Phoenix” Maraz of the Academy of Villains. The music was “How It’s Done” by District 78. From there, host Kat Deeley introduced the judges. That hot Misty Copeland was a guest judge, once again. Next, they revealed that poor Bridget Whitman, Emilio Dosal,Emily James, Stanley Glover, Jourdan Epstein, and Teddy Coffey all landed in the bottom 6. Season 11 of American Idol kicked off with a reminder that, like East German Olympic speed-skaters of the 1970s, this year’s crop of contestants has been groomed for singing-competition glory with scientific rigor and a singular focus. They’ve been listening to renditions of “A Moment Like This” and “Flying Without Wings” from inside their mothers’ wombs. They executed their first Whitney Houston-style runs before the age of three. And if they’re not up to following in Scotty McCreery’s footsteps, then by golly, at the very least they can ably replace Ryan Seacrest — at half the cost...

R&B charmer D’Angelo is apparently ready to come out of hiding and is yet again attempting to record his much anticipated third album. The artist has been in a New York studio recording with some of his longtime collaborators: hip-hop’s hottest drummer and full-time stickman for The Roots, Questlove; producer/engineer Russell Elevado (Nikka Costa, Blackalicious); and bassist Pino Palladino, who also plucks away for John Mayer Trio among numerous other projects.
Through the power of Questlove’s Twitter account, we became aware of the sessions: “Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. Others are working on their 11 year followup. This of course being hour number one.”
Based on Quest’s comment, it appears that D’Angelo has scrapped any previously record material for the long gestating project, which he has supposedly been working on off and on for the past decade...

For those of you who aren't reading (or are done reading? I know jM got a head start of several hours on most of you) there's some television on tonight. After a fashion, anyway. Really, I'm kind of mad because there's nothing I can properly mock on. At best, we've got "The Nine Lives of Chloe King" and I think I've made "so it's literally a pussified version of Wolverine?" joke before. Or did I make that somewhere else? And there's the Mlb All-Star game but I was under the impression that most All-Star games are somewhat uninteresting and just an excuse for a media/advertising circus. Honestly, none of this inspires me enough to put the energy into coming up with something really biting to say about it. So, here's your Tuesday night TV if you're into that sort of thing:

The record industry finally had some good news to report in the first half of the year thanks to some incremental positive growth as a result of strong album sales from Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. But with six months left in 2011, the returns could bulge even further if even half of the albums left on label rosters see the light of day.
Release dates have constantly shifted and some aren't even on schedules yet, but the second half of this year promises new releases from Lil Wayne; Kanye West and Jay-z; Dr. Dre; Evanescence; Joe Jonas; last year's chart slayers, country trio Lady Antebellum; dance master David Guetta; and original "American Idol" Kelly Clarkson.

"Uhhh not sure if this is out yet but a little birdie just told us that @AdamLambert has recorded a song with Christina Aguilera," read the tweet. Adam Lambert's debut album, 2009's For Your Entertainment, was very much a product of his time on "American Idol" — written and produced by a hand-picked team of hitmakers, it was the kind of the thing the folks at 19 Entertainment wanted to hear. So it's somewhat understandable that, on his follow-up disc, Lambert is very much determined to make the kind of album he wants to hear.
"I think I've probably written about 18 to 20 songs. I've been spending the past two and a half months in the studio," Lambert told MTV News on the red carpet of Wednesday's "Idol" finale in Los Angeles. "I'm writing most of the material with people myself this time ... I'm really involved.

Pink's head is "spinning" about her tour. The "So What" singer is due to begin her "Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour" on May 29 in Cologne, Germany, and she has been spending the last few days panicking about hitting the road. She tweeted on her twitter page, "Spent an entire day packing. only 3 more days and I'll be ready to put it all in suitcases, my head is spinning (sic)."
Pink is also trying to get in the best shape she can for the mammoth run of concerts, which involve several grueling and acrobatic dance routines, but is struggling to stay motivated in the gym. She added in another posting on her twitter page, "74 minutes cardio? Couldn't I just do the last 6? I'm sooooo rebellious. If I have to do one single sit up ill cry. I Won't Do It!!!! (sic)."

Jamie Lidell's forthcoming "Compass" is pointing to the stars -- namely Feist, Beck, three members of Grizzly Bear, Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, R&B superstar drummer James Gadson, Nikka Costa and more. The U.K. singer and producer will drop this fourth full-length on May 18 via Warp. The title track, which can be heard below, is a bit surprising: it's a bit slow and sad for an artist that's better known for his Motown-hued dance tracks. Maybe he had a sit-down with Ray Lamontagne. "I wrote every song in a month. It's been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into...

Hear the words "The Best Is Yet To Come" and a dapper Sinatra will likely flash across your mind, dressed to the nines in black coattails and topped with a hat, crooning those famous lyrics. Less likely to come to mind is Cy Coleman, the man behind this and many of the other songs that fill our collective consciousness. The composer and songwriter's life catalog amounts to over 2,000 songs, a number of which were popularized by the likes of Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole on the radio, and Lucille Ball on the Broadway stage. On Sept. 15, a new compilation of Coleman songs entitled (you guessed it) The Best Is Yet To Come will be released on New West Records. The record will include renditions of Coleman songs by 12 modern songstresses, including Nikka Costa, Missy Higgins, Madeleine Peyroux and Patty Griffin.
