Editorial Biases I tend to prefer comic books and graphic novels that are off the beaten path. Even for comics published by mainstream publishers, sometimes you get relatively unique pieces that are not really the norm. We're flooded by superheroes with brightly colored uniforms, exquisitely simple secret identities and a variety of powers, weapons and technology to boot. It's nice sometimes to get something different where the concept of less-is-more almost reigns dominant. Those are the comics I tend to love the most, because they make big statements while understating their premise, their cause, their purpose for telling their story. Whenever I get my...

What if the biblical "Valley of the Shadow of Death" was a real place? That's the story Shadow Walk explores. I had an opportunity to interview writer Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright, Captain America, Daredevil) about his upcoming graphic novel.
How did you become involved with Legendary?
I’ve known Bob Schreck forever, and we'd been looking for something to work on. Thomas Tull had the basic idea of the story and was looking for someone to help flesh it out. I sat down with him, and it couldn’t have gone better. I will freely admit that I fully had my shields up, because I figured some movie guy is going to come and tell me how to write comics. But in fact it was the exact opposite, and Thomas could not have been more humble and more eager to learn the of medium and comics.

Friday was a big day here at the Con, but today is going to be huge. New York is quickly growing into one of the largest Cons in the country, perhaps even number two behind San Diego.
The big event on Friday was the Legendary Comics panel moderated by the Nerdist himself Chris Hardwick. Hardwick is fantastic at on the spot hilarity; the best moderator I’ve seen. Legendary Comics Editor and Chief Bob Schreck introduced some of the new and upcoming titles from Legendary Comics including Matt Wagner’s Tower Chronicles and the Max Brooks helmed Shadow Walk. Then Hardwick introduced legendary comic writer Grant Morrison to announce Annihilator, a new series he is doing with Legendary. Annihilator is about a failing screenwriter who signs a deal with the devil. The tag line Morrison used was something on the line of “what happens when deadlines become life and death.

Legendary Comics has announced projects from Grant Morrison and Guillermo del Toro. Editor-in-chief Bob Schreck unveiled Annihilator and the Pacific Rim prequel comic at New York Comic Con. Annihilator will be a creator-owned title from Morrison that centres around Ray Spass, a screenwriter with a brain tumour who is working on a major motion picture. "He gets the opportunity to write a big tentpole movie called Annihilator, which is based on a character called Max Nomax who's an ancient pulp character," Morrison said. "Max Nomax isn't actually an ancient pulp character, we made him up specifically for this. "Our story is that Ray Spass has got this movie and he kind of makes a deal with the devil. Two days later, the FBI shows up at his door and says, 'A man just turned up - in a black hole we created. (more)...

Today was the first full day of the New York Comic-Con and for us, it began with an announcement at the Legendary Comics booth by editor-in-chief Bob Schreck about two new comics they'd be publishing in 2013, including a prequel comic to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, written by the movie's screenwriter Travis Beacham, and a new six-issue series by Grant Morrison called "Annihilator." We're going to focus on the former, which will act as a prequel to the movie starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.
Guillermo also updated us on some of his other projects in the works, including Disney's Haunted Mansion, on which they plan on hiring a new writer soon to help get it moving forward.

Legendary Comics launches their first series today with The Tower Chronicles: Geisthawk – Volume 1, from Matt Wagner and Simon Bisley. The 48-page prestige format release begins a new universe that represents the kinds of comics Legendary intends to explore. The Tower Chronicles is the tale of John Tower, a supernatural bounty hunter. His missions lead him into mankind’s most dangerous places to banish poltergeists, demons, and other supernatural evils that plague his “sometimes respectable” patrons.
The first issue sports two different covers, one from Bisley, perhaps best remembered for his work on Lobo in the 1990s, and Jim Lee, DC Entertainment’s co-publisher, inked by his usual partner Scott Williams. The series is being inked by Rodney Ramos, the journeyman inker best known for his work on Transmetropolitan.

One would think that being at the top of your game in a profession for nearly 25 years would tend to slow a person down. That's not the case with Matt Wagner. The creator of Grendel and Mage sat down with Dread Central to discuss his newest series, The Tower Chronicles.
"The Tower Chronicles is the collective title of the first all-original offering from the newly formed Legendary Comics, which is the comic book division of Hollywood powerhouse, Legendary Pictures," Wagner said. "It'll ultimately be a trilogy with each book being about 280 pages of story art. Each of the books is serialized in four prestige format sized volumes that are each 68 pages. The first book in the trilogy is called GeistHawk and The Tower Chronicles follow the adventures of John Tower who is a supernatural bounty hunter. GeistHawk is the name of the website he uses to filter out potential clients.

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

Some of you may not know that the San Diego Comic-Con has a little sister known as WonderCon, which is typically held in San Francisco, but this year things are going to be a bit different. Due to renovation work taking place at Moscone Center South, the Con's usual home, the powers-that-be have opted to relocate it to the Anaheim Convention Center for its 2012 run of March 16th-18th rather than cancel or postpone it.
Right now the guest list is mostly geared toward comics fans (Yay! A real "comic" con!), but if last year is any indication, things should start cooking soon with more movie and TV show panels and guests sure to be added. The horror highlights thus far:
Joe Hill - author, Locke and Key, Heart-Shaped Box
Mike Mignola - writer/artist/creator, Hellboy, B.P.R.D.
Steve Niles - writer/creator, 30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre,...

Yesterday afternoon, New York Comic Con had a panel for Legendary Comics, which made their first appearance ever at the event. The panel was hosted by Chris Hardwick, and it included Bob Schreck, the editor-in-chief of Legendary Comics and fan favorite writers Frank Miller, Paul Pope and Matt Wagner. The audience then got their chance to ask a few questions about the comics on the panel, and one of the responses was Miller's confirmation of new Sin City Comic Books: "There will be Sin City stories and I have every intention of doing them with Dark Horse." Could this surprising development mean these new comics may tie in with the (supposedly) upcoming Sin City 2?...

Phew! It was a long, fun day at Baltimore Comic-Con, but I’ll keep this quick so I can get to the best tidbits from the con. Despite the big guns in comics (Marvel, DC, Indigo, Dark Horse) and movies (WB/CW, Universal, Fox, etc.) not having Dealer’s Room presence, there was plenty to see and do!
Comics I wanna see on the big screen (or just get my paws on Right Now):
* Sandshark Studios had a new offering with a name that’s totally cool: Adam And Eve Bizarre Love Triangle In The Zombie Apocalypse Volume 1: Post Armageddon Underground Bunker Blues. Try saying that five times fast. And after (pawing) looking at the dealer’s copy, it’s just as cool as it sounds.
* Kill Shakespeare. No, it’s not the latest arthouse film or a sign I’ve lost my marbles, but a groovy new series.

I can’t believe another Comic-Con is almost upon us. That whole, odd, everything goes faster when you are older thing really is rather annoying. Not that I don’t like Cc… it’s a fairly mind boggling event when you think about it… it’s just that I could have sworn I was just there.
This year is going to be different for two reasons. One, for the first part of the festival, I’ll get to show the insanity off to Timo Descamps and Danny De Jong. It’s going to be their last look at America for the year; they wing their way home to Belgium from San Diego. They already think we Americans are a bit… unique. It will be interesting to hear their opinions after they see throngs of armored, light-saber weilding, Pikachu’s dancing with thong-clad Skeletors and leather-bra wearing Conans.

The image you see there is from one of the only Legendary comic ventures so far, an iPad/iPod prequel comic to "Clash Of The Titans," with art by Gonzalo Arias, an acclaimed fantasy artist with a strong "World Of Warcraft" fanbase. Today, Legendary Pictures announced that they were kicking off a new comics label, a venture that will be headed by Bob Schreck as Editor-in-Chief. Since it was founded in 2005, a great deal of Legendary Pictures' focus has been on the production of comic book movies, ranging from Christopher Nolan's Batman films to this past summer's disastrous Jonah Hex. Part of a co-finance team with Warner Bros. - they have a seven year, 40-picture deal with the studio - Legendary has brought eight graphic works from page to screen. Now they are working in the opposite direction. Legendary Pictures has issued a press release announcing that the company has launched a new division called Legendary Comics and has assigned former Dark Horse/Oni Press/DC Comics/Idw Publishing Editor Bob Schreck has Editor-in-Chief. Launching this week, the company plans to publish between four to six graphic novels a year, both in print and digital forms. We are becoming familiar with the idea that filming graphic novels rarely works out the way we might hope. Alan Moore disinherits most adaptations of his work, big-budget Watchmen drastically changed the story (managing only marginal artistic success, and mixed reactions), and Will Eisner‘s The Spirit quickly became a laughing stock.
There is something very different going on in graphic novels, a subject about which Will Eisner had much to say. Born in 1917, and considered by most the father, grandfather, or otherwise supreme chief of the graphic novel format (or sequential art), Eisner’s work not only led the way for the form to become what it is today, but like many forerunners, is better than anything that followed to boot.
We’re giving it another shot now, with his treasure, A Contract with God. Set to film as distinct(ish) segments directed by Tze Chun, Alex Rivera, Barry Jenkins and Sean Baker,...

Last time a Will Eisner comic reached the screen, it was in the distinctly peculiar form of Frank Miller's The Spirit. It sounds as if a proposed adaptation of Eisner's graphic novel A Contract With God will be treated with more reverence however, with producer Bob Schreck announcing "we are well aware that the work ahead has a very high bar of excellence to aspire to, set by Mr Eisner's pioneering achievements".The book contains four segments - The Super, The Street Singer, Cookalein, and A Contract With God itself - each drawing on Eisner's childhood experiences in the tenements of New York's Bronx district. The sometimes jarringly bleak tales of "life, death, faith and failure" were Eisner's first attempt to break out of the funny pages. As befits a collection of four stories, the film version will be a portmanteau affair, with four directors tackling a chapter each.

Will Eisner left behind a lifetime of work that goes well beyond "The Spirit" when he died in 2005, and few creators can claim to have pushed the graphic novel into popular existence the way he did with his book "A Contract with God." Now, a group of directors and producers that includes former DC Comics editor Bob Schreck have announced that they plan on bringing Eisner's story collection to film.
"Getting to know Will Eisner was one of the great honors of both my personal and professional journeys," Schreck said in a press release. "We are all well aware that the work ahead has a very high bar of excellence to aspire to set by Mr. Eisner's pioneering achievements in storytelling."

Legendary comic book master Will Eisner’s groundbreaking graphic novel “A Contract with God” is being adapted into a live action feature film, it was announced on Saturday at Comic- Con International 2010 by the film’s producers. In what is considered by many to be one of the most influential graphic novels ever written, in “A Contract with God” Eisner utilizes the comic book format in an innovative and pioneering way to explore stories and memories from his childhood growing up in a New York City tenement. Each tale captures the brutality, fragility, and tenderness that exists among people living in close quarters in challenging economic times.

Will Eisner's graphic novel "A Contract With God" is being adapted into a live-action feature by writer-producer Darren Dean.
"God" recounts Eisner's memories of growing up in a New York City tenement, and four directors, who will each helm one chapter of the tale, have lined up to bring it to the screen.
The quartet consists of Alex Rivera ("Sleep Dealer"), Tze Chun ("Children of Invention"), Barry Jenkins ("Medicine for Melancholy") and Sean Baker ("Prince of Broadway").
Dean -- who also co-wrote and produced "Prince of Broadway," which will be released by Elephant Eye Films in the fall -- will produce the adaptation under the auspices of the Eisner estate. Bob Schreck and Michael Ruggiero will serve as co-executive producers, with Tommy Oliver as co-producer and Mark Rabinowitz as associate producer.
The project was announced at Comic-Con at the 22nd annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, honoring achievement in American comic books.

If there's a better place to announce a silver screen adaptation of pioneering 1978 graphic novel A Contract with God than the presentation of creator Will Eisner's namesake awards, I can't begin to imagine it.
It's true: Denis Kitchen, Eisner's literary estate executor, made the unexpected announcement at the presentation of the 2010 Eisner Awards at San Diego Comic-Con. The New York Times' Arts Beat column jumped right in with details after the announcement was made, and it looks like the adaptation of A Contract with God will have four different directors: Alex Rivera, Tze Chun, Barry Jenkins, and Sean Baker. Comics veteran Bob Schreck will be one of the producers.
A Contract with God is an incredibly important work in the history of the graphic novel. It wasn't the first (It Rhymes With Lust can probably claim that honor), but Eisner's heartbreaking story of a Jewish immigrant community in New...

With all their production values, multiple songwriters, and other studio/record label f*&kery, we don’t pay much attention to the pop album. Thank god for Lady Gaga, right? Shut up, The Fame Monster is amazing. At only eight tracks, the record doesn’t overstay its welcome nor does it feel padded with requisite show-offy ballads and other assorted filler. Even the song that does approach ballad territory sounds a bit like Queen, so it’s okay. In fact, it’s mostly heavy dance tracks, which is what you really want from a pop album, right? Well, that’s what I want, at least.
Oh, yeah. Welcome to this week in comics, where nothing gender-bends as much as Lady Gaga.

At first I wanted to feature this title because it reminded me of a John Woo film I haven’t seen yet.

Last year Barnes & Noble commissioned Eisner Award-winning comics illustrator Thomas Yeates to illustrate its new edition of the first three Mars tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The handsome new volume, John Carter of Mars, contains A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars, which together comprise a trilogy recounting the fighting Virginian’s arrival and ascendance on the Red Planet.
A Princess of Mars was Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first book, written after a series of unsuccessful endeavors led him try his hand at bettering what he read in the pulps. His next book was the now-obscure The Outlaw of Torn; Yeates has done his part to revive this overlooked tale of the Middle Ages by illustrating a full color graphic novel edition to be published by Dark Horse under the title The Outlaw Prince (part one). Through the lens of Idw's tenth anniversary, founder Ted Adams and Idw editors and creators addressed a packed room about a wide variety of new projects. Adam Schlesinger liveblogged it, and we also got other info (funny about that)-- here are the highlights:
Jeff Webber talked about the iPhone comics. Idw already has 80 titles available on iTunes now, with much more on the way. Webber talked about the power of the iPhone as a distribution system to capture non-comics fans, which is natural, given the changing nature of comics distribution out of comic book shops and into bookstores and the internet. Apparently, non-typical comic readers enjoy slideshows, rather than a zoomed in page, because it’s easier to read. Also, the swiping from panel to panel increases the interactivity of the medium, which draws non-typical comic fans in. Chris Ryall concluded that 20% of top 100% of book sales on iTunes have been from Idw.
