Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

The Gilded Age stars Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon go way back — they first shared the Broadway stage in 1984, when the Tony-winning Baranski played mother to Nixon in Tom Stoppard’s acclaimed play The Real Thing. “Who’s this young, gifted, charming woman?” Baranski recalls of first working with Nixon, who — nearly 40 years after their first collaboration — now plays Ada Brook, the sister to Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn on Julian Fellowes’ historical HBO drama.
“I was already in awe of her,” says Nixon of working with her scene partner decades ago. “I was basically a kid, but we’re only 14 years apart. She was way too young to be my mother, but that didn’t occur to me at the time.”
Adds Baranski with a laugh: “I loved playing her mother, and now I’m her older sister. Don’t you love showbiz?”

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 6, “Warning Shots.”] Morgan Spector‘s George Russell saw the climax of the workers’ strike in The Gilded Age Season 2’s sixth episode. Tensions reached a tipping point when Henderson (Darren Goldstein), the union’s leader, and his men faced being shot and killed as they tried to prevent scabs from crossing their picket line. At the very last moment, George stopped the police from carrying out any bloodshed — a move that left his right-hand man, Richard Clay (Patrick Page), seething. Spector tells TV Insider that while the union has won this battle, there will be more to this war in a potential third season. And George’s humane decision in Episode 6 may cause an irreparable rift between him and Richard, similar to a real-life robber baron and his No. 2 from the same era. “Obviously these [union] issues aren’t going anywhere, but I would expect we would probably ...

Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” delves deeper into the steel strikers and railroad labor unions that loomed in Season 1 — a storyline that parallels the recent entertainment industry strikes, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield says.
On Sunday episode, railroad magnate George Russell (Morgan Spector) met with the captain of a labor union Mr. Henderson (Darren Goldstein) in an attempt to quell the rising tensions from the many men he employed to construct the life-changing railroads that made him rich. The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

A gasp went around the world when viewers learned that Marian (Louisa Jacobsen) has been teaching children watercolors in “The Gilded Age” Season 2, Episode 1.
Less of a gasp and more of a chuckle, really, as “The Gilded Age” did what it arguably does best, delivering an extremely minor narrative development with the intensity of something much more significant. The show is filled with such petty inconveniences, as well as actual serious developments, all of it sold to full effect by the cast and setting. Teaching watercolor probably was a big deal for a high-society unmarried woman in the 19th-century, but it’s exacerbated on “The Gilded Age” by Aunt Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) reaction. Truly, watching characters on the show react to everything from the wrong napkin to a secret child is one of the joys of watching this series.

For a series stuffed to the gills with Tony Award-winning actors, it makes perfect sense that the second season of “The Gilded Age” would find its ensemble embroiled in a plot over dueling opera houses. As Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell says at the beginning of the new trailer, “I intend to bring the great city of New York the opera house it deserves.” That development puts her at odds once again with the moneyed old guard of the city, played by Christine Baranski and Donna Murphy. Watch the full season two trailer above.
This eight-episode installment of the HBO series also promises new adventures for its two young heroines. Peggy (Denée Benton) looks to return to living with Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski). Her burgeoning career as a newspaper columnist takes her to cover the opening of a school in Tuskegee, while her mother (Audra McDonald) warns her...

Nothing stays the same forever — not even on a show from Julian Fellowes, the creator best known for the comforting (and occasionally chaotic) vibes of “Downton Abbey.”
Fellowes’ latest HBO drama, “The Gilded Age,” returns soon for its second season — another installment full of lavish costumes, clashes of new and old ideology, and Carrie Coon waging psychological warfare on an impervious Christine Baranski. That’s right, Bertha Russell (Coon) and Agnes Van Rhijn (Baranski) are still at it in Season 2, the former while she pushes New York toward the urban, modern, and industrial; the latter by gatekeeping from her tea room and insisting that her niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson) focus on getting married — and ostensibly feeling less enthused when Agnes’ sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon) appears to be finding love. The trailer uses words like “fighter,” “battle,” and “war,” leaving no ambiguity as to what exactly is going on between these...

Monza (Italy), Sep 3 (Ians) Reigning double World Drivers’ Champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull came out on top of the field once again, winning the Italian Grand Prix and securing his 10th successive victory in Formula 1 racing on Sunday.
Verstappen, who started behind pole-sitter Carlos Sainz, got the better of Ferrari driver and his teammate Charles Leclerc, to make more history in F1 racing as he moved ahead of the record held by former champion Sebastian Vettel of Germany.
Verstappen took the chequered flag ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez for another 1-2 finish for Red Bull this season as the team romped to its 15th successive F1 race.

Monaco, May 29 (Ians) Dutch driver Max Verstappen kept Red Bull’s 2023 winning record intact by finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Esteban Ocon of Alpine in a chaotic finish caused by rain shower in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.
Defending Drivers’ champion Verstappen made a clean getaway when the race began to maintain his pole position advantage over Alonso into the first corner on the street circuit.
But as the race developed and the planned one-and-only stops approached, a rain shower hit the track to turn the encounter on its head, causing a flurry of off-track excursions, brushes with the barriers and pit lane activity.
Alonso pitted while only a portion of the track was damp and initially took on mediums, but intensifying rainfall meant he was forced back in for intermediates, which the rest of the field clambered for as well.

Melbourne, April 1 (Ians) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on Saturday was delighted to claim the pole position for Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix for the first time in his career.
As all drivers battled to get the most out of their soft tyres, Dutch driver Verstappen ended the first Q3 runs with a slender 0.009s advantage, but the reigning world champion’s second single-lap attempt yielded a much-improved 1m 16.732s — securing the top spot for him by a couple of tenths.
With Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez sliding off the track in the first qualifying session, Verstappen’s nearest rivals were Mercedes pair George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who used the tricky conditions to slot their W14s ahead of both Aston Martin and Ferrari machines.
“The last lap was pretty decent. Up until then, it was just really tricky to find the grip and try to nail it on one lap.

Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), March 20 (Ians) Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took victory in Sunday’s Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as teammate Max Verstappen salvaged second place after starting 15th.
Starting from pole position, Perez lost out to Fernando Alonso at the first corner, but regained the lead on Lap 4 and was never headed as he took his fifth career win and his first since last season’s Monaco Grand Prix, a Xinhua report said.
Verstappen had started the race well down the order after a driveshaft issue had ruined his qualifying session, but a Safety Car period on Lap 18 helped him vault up the order, and the Dutchman was up to second place behind Perez by Lap 25.
Verstappen complained about problems with his driveshaft late in the race, and though the Dutchman managed to bring the car home and set the race’s fastest lap, he never came within four seconds of Perez.

Sakhir (Bahrain), March 6 (Ians) With British drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in the cockpit of a new car, Mercedes was expected to give champions Red Bull and Max Verstappen a run for their money in the Formula 1 season opener in Bahrain Grand Prix.
The hopes were bolstered with Mercedes doing well in the qualifying rounds, while in the end Red Bull took the top two positions on the podium with Verstappen and Sergio Perez, Hamilton finished fifth and Russell took the seventh spot.
Thus, Russell insists Mercedes must go “back to the drawing board” after he finished in seventh position in the season opener in Bahrain — with the British driver questioning whether the team have been “too conservative” with their 2023 car, the W14.

Abu Dhabi, Nov 20 (Ians) Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took his 15th win of the 2022 Formula 1 season with victory in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
Starting from the pole position, Verstappen controlled the race from the front and was never threatened as he took a typically dominant win and extended his record for most Grand Prix wins in a single season.
“It was a good race. It was all about tyre management. I think we looked after the Mediums quite well and then on the Hard tyres managing until the end,” said Verstappen, who won last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in contentious circumstances.
“Incredible to win again here. A 15th win of the season is unbelievable. It’s been really enjoyable to work with the whole team and to be able to achieve something like this.
“I know it is going to be hard to replicate something like this,...

Abu Dhabi, Nov 18 (Ians) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen outpaced the Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the second practice at the Yas Marina Circuit here on Friday.
One of eight drivers to sit out first practice for various ‘rookie’ runs, Verstappen quickly got up to speed in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to produce a benchmark time of 1m 25.146s on the soft compound tyre.
Russell finished three-tenths back after encountering traffic in the final sector of his push lap on the red-marked rubber.
Leclerc was another tenth adrift in third, followed closely by first-practice pace-setter Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Alongside Verstappen and Sainz, there were returns to the cockpit for Lando Norris (McLaren), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Nicholas Latifi (Williams), Fernando Alonso (Alpine), Mick Schumacher (Haas) and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).
Alonso, wearing a Sebastian Vettel tribute helmet, took eighth, just behind teammate Esteban Ocon,...

Sao Paulo (Brazil), Nov 14 (Ians) Mercedes Formula One driver George Russell has been left “speechless” following his maiden Grand Prix victory at Sao Paulo, with the British racer also helping his team take its first win and one-two of the season with Lewis Hamilton finishing second late on Sunday.
Russell’s Sprint and Grand Prix double in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos has capped a fine recovery for Mercedes in the back end of 2022, after being pegged back by Red Bull and Ferrari.
Adding to the success at Interlagos on Sunday, Hamilton backed up Russell in the other Mercedes to give the team a one-two finish, meaning they are now just 19 points behind Ferrari in the battle for Position 2 (P2) in the constructors’ standings.
“What an amazing feeling. Just a huge thank you to the whole team for making this possible. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster this season,...

Mexico City, Oct 31 (Ians) Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has expressed his surprise at winning a record 14 races in a year and eclipsing the feats of Germany’s Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013), who have 13 race wins in a year.
Verstappen made history as he beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to claim his 14th victory of the 2022 season at the Mexican Grand Prix after an intriguing strategic battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez here on Sunday.
The Red Bull driver said he was “incredibly proud” to achieve the feat.
Verstappen took pole position by more than three-tenths as Mercedes’ George Russell qualified on the front row and Lewis Hamilton qualified third on Saturday. Verstappen — on soft tyres while the Mercedes chose mediums — retained his lead in Sunday’s race, and it soon became clear that he would be able to pull off a one-stop strategy and win, which he did by...

Mexico City, Oct 29 (Ians) George Russell put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets during second practice as Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out in the Mexico City Grand Prix here on Friday.
But it was Russell who led the way with an early lap time of 1m 19.970s on 2022-spec soft tyres, given that the regular drivers who sat out FP1 were permitted to run their own programme for the first half of the session to help them make up for lost time (Russell having handed his car to Nyck de Vries).
Not long after Russell’s pace-setting effort, Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at the entry to the high-speed Turn 7 and dramatically slid backwards into the barriers on the outside of Turn 8, inflicting significant damage on the car’s rear end and bringing out the red flags.
With Leclerc unharmed, his car cleared away and the barriers repaired,...

Austin (Texas), Oct 24 (Ians) Dutch Formula 1 driver and 2022 champion Max Verstappen emerged victorious at the end of an action-packed United States Grand Prix, fending off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in a tense finale, while his Red Bull team took their first constructors’ title since 2013.
Verstappen’s record-equalling 13th win of the season, and the squad’s championship triumph, came a day after Red Bull co-founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz passed away — a fifth F1 constructors’ title.
Having moved into the lead at the start, avoiding the drama behind as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Mercedes’ George Russell clashed at Turn 1, Verstappen had looked set for a comfortable victory at the circuit, dealing with multiple Safety Car restarts and managing his pace expertly, according to formula1.com.
But a slow final pit stop opened the door for Hamilton and the recovering Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, the reigning world champion having to pass...
