The Detour is coming to an end. TBS has opted not to renew the comedy series starring Jason Jones and Natalie Zea for a fifth season. The final episode of Season 4, which aired on August 20, doubled as a series finale.
Created, written and executive-produced by husband-and-wife duo of Jones and Samantha Bee, The Detour was part of the first wave of comedy series ordered by TBS after Kevin Reilly joined Turner, which broke through. Most of the others, including Wrecked and People of Earth, were also canceled recently as TBS is morphing from a comedy-centric to a general-entertainment network featuring both comedy and drama programming.
The Detour focused on the hilariously dysfunctional Parker family and their infamous misadventures, which included a bonkers road trip, a disastrous move to New York and a run from the law in Alaska, among other things.

TBS has ordered a fourth season of its hit comedy The Detour.
Created, written and executive-produced by Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, the series, which focuses on the hilarilously dysfunctional Parker family, has been a success for TBS since its launch. Season 3 reached more than 25 million viewers across TBS’ linear, VOD and digital platforms, up 74% in digital views, according to the network. So far, the family’s misadventures have included a bonkers road-trip, a disastrous move to New York and a run from the law in Alaska. What could be next?

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Detour” Season 3 Episode 4, “The Goal.”]
The first scene that Natalie Zea ever directed for TV was the restaurant karaoke sequence from Tuesday night’s episode of “The Detour.” If two Broadway vets (Laura Benanti and Gideon Glick) singing “Almost Paradise” to Jason Jones’ Nate sounds like a tame scene description, know that it would still probably be one of the wildest scenes on most other TV comedies. For Zea, it was far from a simple first assignment (and not just because of the 360-degree camera move at the end when Nate and Zea’s character Robin reunite).
“That was my first scene that I directed. I was awful,” Zea told IndieWire with a laugh. “You have a lot to prove. It was feelings that I haven’t felt in a while. I’ve been acting for 20 years and when I walk onto a set, even when it’s a new show,...
