The Max series Tokyo Vice enthralled audiences with its deep and intricate exploration into the underbellies of Japan. The series is based on the controversial book of the same name by Jake Adelstein and stars Ansel Elgort playing Adelstein along with popular Japanese actor Ken Watanabe. The first season received great reviews from audiences and critics.

The second season of the show is now streaming on Max. The makers of the show were hell-bent on shooting the series on location in Japan rather than constructing sets and recreating the country in other places. Despite a history of difficulties in having a Hollywood production in Japan, Tokyo Vice makers were successful in taking the necessary steps to secure a location for their shoot.

Ansel Elgort is returning to Japan for Season 2 of Max series “Tokyo Vice.”
The “West Side Story” star muses in the trailer that he loves the “unpredictability” of being a journalist abroad covering organized crime. However, the dangers of covering the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat pushes him deeper into the city’s criminal underworld.
“Tokyo Vice” is created and written by Tony Award winner J.T. Rogers and loosely based on real-life journalist Jake Adelstein’s experiences as an expat. Elgort stars as Adelstein, with Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito reprising their respective roles for Season 2.
Yosuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya join the cast as new series regulars for the 10-episode second season.

For daily updates follow us @NotebookMUBI.NEWSThe Way of the Wind (Terrence Malick).According to Terrence Malick’s producer, Alex Boden, the filmmaker is in the editing room working on his biblical epic The Way of the Wind, formerly known as The Last Planet. “Terry is very happy with what he is working on so far is the word,” Boden told Variety. Over at The Film Stage, Nick Newman compiles all of the updates and rumors so far about the production. It’s been years since we heard about Terrence Malick’s The Way of the Wind––as it so happens our 2020 reveal that it had changed titles from The Last Planet might be the most recent info of note. Even by his meticulous and secretive standards has the film, which shot in 2019, seemed less and less likely to ever emerge, making it a relief that some update’s arrived courtesy producer Alex Boden, who told Variety the project is “very much in the edit room.”
Not that it goes much deeper (we said some update), as Boden seems to be reporting secondhand, saying “Terry is very happy with what he is working on so far is the word.” The shooting-to-premiere rate on recent films has tended to be three years so Wind‘s four-year gap with a pandemic in-between leaves certain wiggle room, if not the gnawing knowledge that every...

The fans of the hit Max original series Tokyo Vice don’t have to worry about the impact of the WGA and the SAG-AFTRA strike on the series’ second season. Because Season 2 of Tokyo Vice had finished filming before the writers and actors strike began according to Tokyo Vice producer Alex Boden, who confirmed the good news in an interview with Variety.
Boden also expressed his hope that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are resolved before the second season of the series comes out. Check out what he said below:
“Everyone involved is so proud of the work that they’ve done on this unique show — the writers, of course, but also the actors, we’ve got Ansel Elgort and Rachel Keller, who both spent a lot of time and energy learning Japanese and now speak really good Japanese. So it’d be a shame to have any...

After four years of post-production and countless festival premiere rumors that never materialized, any cinephile would be forgiven for thinking Terrence Malick had abandoned “The Way of the Wind.” The biblical epic, which offers a reimagined take on several episodes from the life of Jesus Christ, was filmed in the summer of 2019 with a cast that includes Mark Rylance as Satan and Géza Röhrig as Christ. But Malick has demonstrated his trademark lack of urgency while editing the film, leading many to believe that the project would never be released.
Despite the delays, one of the film’s producers insists that the editing process is still moving along. In a new interview with Variety, producer Alex Boden indicated that Malick continues to labor over the film in post-production. While he offered little in the way of concrete details and said that the release timeline is still open-ended, Boden’s words...

The keenly awaited Season 2 of Max’s “Tokyo Vice” completed principal photography just before the Hollywood strikes and is now in post-production, producer Alex Boden tells Variety. Auteur Terrence Malick’s biblical drama “The Way of the Wind” is being edited.

Germany’s Zdf Studios has secured worldwide distribution rights for documentary series “Hitler’s Power” (3 x 50’), an exploration of how and why Hitler rose to power and the terrible events that followed.
On Jan. 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. The series examines why the Nazi leader was confident of the approval of most Germans, even when the war was clearly lost, and what led Germans to support the Holocaust.
Eco Media, History Media and Zdf Digital, a Zdf Studios subsidiary, teamed to co-produce “Hitler’s Power” in association with Zdf Studios.
Ralf Rückauer, VP, unscripted, Zdf Studios, said: “’Hitler’s Power’ is very much a modern look at this period of German history, designed for a young audience that is disconnected from the generation who experienced the war or its aftermath. Netflix's latest series will delve deep into Arthurian legends.
The streamer on Tuesday unveiled the full-length trailer for Cursed, and there's a lot to like.
Based on the New York Times bestselling book, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.
After her mother's death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.
Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.
Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

Pggb has been working closely with the British Film Commission, alongside other leading production industry orgs such as producers’ trade body Pact and entertainment union Bectu during the industry-wide consultation on the Covid-19 production protocols, which were finalized in late May.

The U.K.’s $4.5 billion film and high-end TV industry has turned its attention to when production can restart now that the country’s official coronavirus safety protocols have been published.
It’s likely that a number of major productions will be up and running as early as July, while September or October is a more realistic timeline for most. For others, it could be next year.
Warner Bros., for example, is reportedly keen to restart filming “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, as soon as it is safely possible. Other major productions that were halted in the U.K due to coronavirus include Netflix’s “The Witcher” and Disney’s live-action “Little Mermaid.”
Published today, the British Film Commission’s 44-page set of guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for production to resume safely, although the road ahead remains complex, not least due to insurance considerations. As revealed by Variety,...

As the U.K.’s film and TV industry looks to restart, a crucial 10-day consultation period is underway on production guidelines that are now circulating across the industry. (Excerpts of the guidelines are published below.)
More than six weeks on from the March 23 lockdown, industry figures such as John McVay, head of producers’ trade body Pact, warns that restarting business “is not like switching a factory back on.”
“A lot of people are saying, ‘You should just do what Denmark or other countries did,’ (but) every country is different. Just because Denmark does it one way, it doesn’t mean it will work here,” McVay tells Variety.
The route to get cameras rolling again has required a complex network of British Film Institute-led working groups on high-end film and TV production, exhibition and distribution, broadcasting and independent film — all of whom have spent more than a month compiling best...

Toronto -- Tough times have coin-starved indie producers hopping from the Toronto International Film Festival to IFP in New York City, by way of the Strategic Partners co-production conference in Halifax.
Strategic Partners organizer Jan Miller points to a "higher caliber" of producers, sales agents, funders and broadcasters in Halifax from Friday to Sunday as traditional financing sources these days go dry or are depleted.
"Everyone has limited funds and limited time as they look to grab people between Toronto and Ifp," she said of this year's producer matchmaking.
About 30 projects have been invited to Halifax to participate in Canada's biggest film financing forum during the Atlantic Film Festival.
Montreal-based producer Melissa Malkin of Silo Corp. will be shopping in both Halifax and New York "White Circus," a live action/animated feature from Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, who wrote and directed the Academy Award-nominated short animated drama "Madame Tulti Pulti.
