The Cylons, androids created by man, are the villains of "Battlestar Galactica," but they wear human guises. This reflects how the show's human heroes are all deeply flawed people and humanity's foibles (from arrogance to self-destructive) continue to haunt them even as their technology soars past the modern day.
Indeed, the best villain in "Battlestar Galactica" was a human character: Admiral Helena Cain (Michelle Forbes), commander of the Battlestar Pegasus. In the series' pilot min-series, the Cylons attack humanity's 12 colonies. The only survivors appear to be Galactica herself and a handful of civilian spaceships, who set out to find the mythical world Earth to be their new home.
Midway through season 2 in the episode, "Pegasus," the Galactica and her fleet meet the Pegasus, the other Battlestar which survived the genocide.. It doesn't stay a happy reunion for long. In a great dramatic move, Cain pulls rank on Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos...

Before they were Professor Charles Xavier and Jean Grey in "X-Men," Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen shared the screen on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Stewart was, of course, the series lead, Enterprise-d Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Janssen played Kamala, one of the many beautiful alien women on "Star Trek." Captain Kirk may be the famed womanizer, but Picard had his dalliances over the show's seven seasons -- Kamala included.
The episode is "The Perfect Mate," the 21st installment of the fifth season. Kamala is a Kriosian "metamorph," an empathetic being who can read their partners' feelings and adjust themselves to them. She's been betrothed to an ambassador from the neighboring world Valt, in hopes this will help end a conflict between the planets. As she travels on the Enterprise-d and works alongside Picard, they grow closer and closer.
Aired in 1992, this was Janssen's first role on television.

Colloquially among Trekkies, the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Up the Long Ladder" is known as "The one with the Space Irish." Or maybe I'm the only one who refers to it that way. Regardless, "Up the Long Ladder" features the Space Irish. In the episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise has to evacuate a colony on the planet Bringloid V, as their sun is experiencing solar flares. Long ago, the Bringloidians adopted an Irish agrarian lifestyle, and they bring along their livestock, hay, and twee Irish accents. The colony's patriarch, Danielo O'Dell (Barrie Ingham), is a caricature Irish drunk, and his daughter Breanna (Rosalyn Landor) is a typically haughty Irish lass.
It's later revealed that the Bringloidians represent only half of a century-old transport ship, and that the rest of the settlers formed their own colony on a nearby planet. The second colony, called Mariposa, is technologically advanced,...

If one was in a critical mood, one might point out that many of the Starfleet uniforms seen throughout "Star Trek" don't really scream professionalism. In the original series, futuristic military uniforms were little more than warm, tight-fitting t-shirts, black slacks, and polished black boots. Women, meanwhile, wore tailored minidresses and black leggings, hardly practical for away missions that may involve hiking, phaser fire, or quick movement. One might need to flex their well-toned headcanon muscles to posit that future fabrics were more durable and regulated temperature better than what we have here in the 21st century.
On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," things didn't improve much. For one, some of the original minidresses remained in the backgrounds of the show's first few episodes. This was in the decidedly post-minidress year of 1987. To be fair, the showrunners clearly tried taking the curse off of the inherently sexist costuming by putting...

The original documentation for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" painted a slightly different picture compared to what eventually made its way to the screen. According to Larry Nemecek's invaluable "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion" (the 1995 version), the show's first casting call went out on December 10, 1986, calling for a certain kind of captain:
"Capt. Julien Picard – A Caucasian man in his 50s who is very youthful and in prime physical condition. Born in Paris, his Gallic accent appears when deep emotions are triggered. He is definitely a 'romantic' and believes strongly in concepts like honor and duty. Capt....

The Star Trek community has gathered online to mourn Rene Auberjonois, one of the series most-beloved characters in his role as the shape-shifting constable Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek and in its film series, tweeted out his condolences.
“I have just heard about the death of my friend and fellow actor @reneauberjonois. To sum up his life in a tweet is nearly impossible. To Judith, Tessa & Remy I send you my love & strength. I will keep you in my thoughts and remember a wonderful friendship with René.”
We’ll add more reflections as they come in.

I don’t know about you, but I keep forgetting to watch Star Trek: Discovery.
I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t wait for each episode of Star Trek Continues.
As I’m sure you know, CBS, through the complicated Hollywood system of it’s mine, it’s mine!, owns the television rights to Trek and in its infinite wisdom stupidity decided to launch Discovery on their streaming network. Which you have to pay for.
Star Trek Continues, a continuation of the five-year mission of the Constellation class starship USS Enterprise Ncc-1701, captained by James Tiberius Kirk, is a love-fast to the original series. It is available for free on YouTube and its own website.
Stc was co-produced by the non-profit charity Trek Continues, Inc., Dracogen, Far From Home LLC and Farragut Films, and was partially funded by Kickstarter, in an incredibly successful campaign of crowd sourcing.

Home Video fans have a lot to look forward to as Paramount Home Entertainment releases a variety of Star Trek material this year. First up and arriving Tuesday, just days after its 34th anniversary is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director’s Cut. This is the first time director Nicholas Meyer’s version of the now-classic film is available on Blu-ray.
There’s little left to say about just how good the film is and looking back, we can easily see the affection both cast and crew put into the production. There was a gamble in bringing in Harve Bennett to produce and Meyer to direct only because neither had been a part of Trek previously and Paramount needed the film to be a major success to salvage the franchise.
Thankfully, Bennett understand the genre and Meyer was a gifted novelist and filmmaker so got down to the core elements.

With the debut today of the sixth episode of the excellent web series Star Trek Continues, Cinelinx looks at one of the most outstanding fan-fiction projects being produced today, as it reaches its third year. This show is not only a superb tribute to the original Star Trek, it’s a well-made and entertaining series in its own right.
Any fan of the original Star Trek TV series should enjoy this impressive follow-up, which continues the Five Year Mission of the USS Enterprise. It picks up after the last episode of the original show “Turnabout Intruder” (The final scene of which is recreated in a short video vignette that precedes the series) and chronicles the 4th year of Captain Kirk and his crew going where no man has gone before.
The creative minds behind Star Trek Continues have been putting out original episodes online since May of 2013. The latest release...

By now you may have heard the rumor circulating about a new Star Trek television series that Netflix was reportedly in talks to host. Unfortunately, those rumors have since been largely debunked as nothing but wishful thinking. It’s the sort of story that whet fans’ appetites but has no basis in real-world discussions. But in the wake of these rumors, a new hope rises that perhaps the seed has been planted in the brains of those that rule CBS and Netflix, and that the rumors might someday become reality.
The whole thing appears to have begun from an anonymous source that was then picked up by website Starfleet Intelligence (via GeekNation). The rumor stated that writer and producer Larry Nemecek had discussed the proposed series at the Phoenix ComicCon. The idea, as it goes, was that Netflix would produce a series for their streaming service, with CBS receiving royalties...

Back before J.J. Abrams ever got his hands on the Star Trek franchise, came the ultimate fantasy, a Houston-based convention that turned into an epic debacle eventually dubbed The Con of Wrath. It was supposed to be the granddaddy of all Star Trek conventions — and wound up as the mother of all meltdowns. Just a few days after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan hit theatres, a high point for Star Trek fandom, the event took place. It was supposed to be the first time the entire main cast of Star Trek would appear together in public, on one stage. But everything went wrong…
Star Trek enthusiast Larry Nemecek is producing a documentary about this convention, also called The Con of Wrath, and has created a trailer to help raise awareness about his project.

A trailer has been released for a documentary called The Con of Wrath which is described as the most infamous Star Trek convention in history. The con took place on June 19-20, 1982 just a few days after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was released in theaters. Apparently the shit hit the fan at this convention and Larry Nemecek wanted to produce a feature sharing the story to the world. I've never heard of this until the trailer popped up, but it looks like an interesting documentary.
"The Con of Wrath" is my upcoming MyStar Media documentary about the original Star Trek "rock concert" arena convention that went from "meltdown to miracle" —an amazing save by fans, staff and Trek actors alike over three long days in 1982. It was a weekend some Star Trek fans hoped the world would forget. It was 1982, and some had billed it the "grandaddy of all Star Trek conventions." Scheduled to take place just days after the release of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," this was supposed to be a convention like none other. Taking place on a revolving stage at the old Summit arena in Houston, the cast of "Star Trek" was supposed to be presented with laser shows, an orchestra and more. Instead, it became the biggest convention meltdown of all time. Author and Star Trek historian Larry Nemecek is ready to bring that convention back to life in a new documentary that's beginning production later this year. "The Con of Wrath" will feature interviews from both celebrities -- like Walter Koenig and producer Harve ...

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement. My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films...
