Four more reader questions to kick off the weekend. Wheeee. As ever, I'd love to hear your answers to these questions thrown my way.
Matt St Clair: Is there an unseen awards contender this year that you are hoping doesn't fail?
Nathaniel: My "please let this be successful" hopes reside with Blade Runner 2049 (because the original's reputation being tarnished would be such a pity), The Greatest Showman (because musicals Must continue to thrive) and Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (because it's infinitely annoying that Annette Bening doesn't have an Oscar yet and didn't even get nominated for such gorgeous work in 20th Century Women). While we're well- wishing please let Wonderstruck, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and The Florida Project could be bigger hits than usual for Todd Haynes, John Cameron Mitchell, and Sean Baker, since they're three of our most distinctive American auteurs. A few years back, in the heady days of 2012, Luc Besson co-write, alongside directors Stephen S. Leger and James Mather, and took the executive producer role on Lock Out, a sci-fi actioner which saw Guy Pierce charged with rescuing the President’s daughter from a hi-tech space jail overrun by hardened criminals. Just looking at that brief synopsis, you may see what a lot of people saw, that it was Very similar to John Crapenter’s 1981 classic Escape from New York. One person who definitely thought so was Carpenter himself, who took Besson to court over the glaring similarities, and via Yahoo, we now have a verdict, with a Paris appeals court coming down in favour of Carpenter, ordering Besson to pay $500,000 after being found guilty of plagiarism. The basic premise of Lockout is indeed eerily similar to Escape from New York, and to a lesser extent it’s sequel Escape from L.A.,...

Equals is Equilibrium without guns. That’s not just to call a comparison to the worlds that the films create, but also to show how Equals elevates itself using a very similar setting. Both take place in societies where emotions are demonized, and the inhabitants must keep from feeling anything in the attempt to fit in. The divergence is that while Equilibrium allows its awesome action to take over the plot, Equals doesn’t have guns, meaning that it cannot devolve into just another generic future action movie by the end. Instead, it turns into a wrenching love story, that while heavy-handed and melodramatic, works to a more satisfying degree.
Nicholas Hoult plays Silas, a man who suddenly starts to feel. He starts to notice Nia, (Kristen Stewart) who is another person that is starting to feel. Together, they find their way through these new feelings,...

Now that she's answered Game of Thrones fans' prayers and resurrected Jon Snow, it's time to get to know the woman behind mysterious Melisandre better.
Here are five things you need to know about Dutch actress Carice van Houten:
1. She speaks four languagesIn addition to her native Dutch and English, Van Houten is fluent in German and speaks "a little French." So if we're being technical, she speaks three and a half languages, which certainly helps with mastering different accents for different characters. Does the lord commander of the Night's Watch live on – or must all men, even Jon Snow, die?
Game of Thrones released the first season 6 tease art Monday, an eerie still of Jon Snow's bloody face – and it seems to only fuel the rumors he'll be back.
Since his devastating death in the very last minutes of the season 5 finale, which aired in June, speculation has been swirling around whether or not the beloved character is really dead, or if he will be returning alive or in some capacity next season.

The release of Ant-Man marks the official end of Marvel's Phase 2 films. With Phase 3 set to kick off next Summer, we thought it'd be a great time to take a look at how the second Phase of the Marvel Universe did overall. Come inside to check out our thoughts!
The commercial success of the McU has proven that comic book films are here to stay. Audiences have enthusiastically embraced Disney’s films that bring their favorite comic book characters to the big screen. Phase 1 was proof of concept. It was possible to have several comic book character-based movies take place in the same universe. The original Avengers film was proof that audiences would enjoy seeing them working together to fight bad guys. Phase 2 is all about maintaining that trend while introducing new faces. Was Disney successful in accomplishing its goals? What can they do to improve Phase 3? This is a...

Kit Harington is trading in his sword for a new role in the thriller Brimstone opposite Dakota Fanning and Guy Pierce.
According to Variety, the film will shoot on location in Romania, Spain and Germany.
The part is his first since leaving Game of Thrones: His character Jon Snow died in the season 5 finale on June 14.
Though some fans aren't convinced Snow is really gone, director David Nutter told People, "After all those stab wounds, he's a dead man."
Harington, 28, is also taking a stab at comedy, appearing in Andy Samberg's upcoming HBO tennis mockumentary 7 Days in Hell.

Scoot McNairy will be joining the cast of "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" in a undisclosed role.
McNairy made an appearance in the Marvel short film: All Hail the King. Currently he is working with Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson on the film "The Rover."
DC Fandom has slowly started murmuring that he would potentially make a great Flash*. However, the role is secretive and no one is saying anything from Warner Bros.
Shooting on the film has already begun and the cast consists of Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, along with a long list of A-list actors.
The film is schedule to release on May 6, 2016, during the same weekend that Captain America is scheduled to release.
*Note: If he is the Flash, then Stephen Amell will not be the big screen Green Arrow as Flash already exist in that universe; played by Grant Gustin.

There’s been a change of cast in the film “Black Mass” about mob boss Whitey Bulger. While the part of Bulger’s law-abiding brother had previously been filled by Guy Pierce, it seems he has now been replaced with Benedict Cumberbatch, according to the Boston Globe. Helmed by Scott Cooper (“Out of the Furnace”), the film follows the true story of Bulger (Johnny Depp), his friend and FBI agent John Connelly (Joel Edgerton) who helped him escape capture, and the witness protection program created by J. Edgar Hoover. Jesse Plemons, Dakota Johnson and Juno Temple also have roles in the now-filming [...]

I was a big fan of David Michôd’s familial crime drama Animal Kingdom, and not just because I saw it on an airplane. If his follow-up The Rover looks to try on a rather generic premise — a hero on the hunt for what’s rightfully his — that’s hopefully not much cause for concern: Animal Kingdom found its strength not in plot, but in its characterization and pacing. Reteaming with the always reliable Guy Pierce, Michôd trades in the rest of his local ensemble for the dubious star wattage of Robert Pattinson, performing an indiscernible accent as a discarded gang member. I've recently been circling around the idea of actually getting a tattoo. If I get one, it will be my first. But I've been thinking about some of the tattoos that I've seen in the movies over the years, and I started looking them up online to remind myself of what they looked like. I would never get a tattoo that I saw in a movie, it'd have to be an original design, but I was looking for a little inspiration.
While going through all the movie tattoos that I could think of, I decided to put together a list of some of the most memorable tattoos have been featured on the big screen. Here they are in no particular order.
Reign of Fire - Matthew McConaughey
How many of you forgot about how badass McConaughey was in this dragon slaying action film?! He sported some crazy cool tattoo art in it.

Australian filmmaker David Michôd, who directed and wrote the acclaimed drama "Animal Kingdom," will direct the first episode of "Flesh and Bone," a dark ballet series starring newcomer Sarah Hay as a young, troubled ballerina who joins an elite company in New York. The show is created and executive produced by "Breaking Bad" writer-producer Moira Walley-Beckett and is set to premiere in 2015. Michôd will also appear later this year as the director of the upcoming drama "The Rover," which stars Robert Pattinson and Guy Pierce. In terms of his TV work, Michôd previously directed an episode of HBOs acclaimed (but cancelled) "Enlightened." “I’m entirely enamored of the visual, visceral, artful way David tells story,” said Walley-Beckett. “His style and sensibility is very much in alignment with my vision of my show.”...

Great Aussie crime thriller droops at the end but pulls through thanks to Guy Pearce. Guy Pierce plays the tormented, ex-con lead of Pauline Chan.s .33 Postcards.. The star who made a sterling name for himself in .The King.s Speech. summons the dark forces that made his performances in .L.A. Confidential. and .Memento. his most memorable. Like his portrayal of the troubled Ed Exley in .L.A. Confidential,. Pierce is at his best as an all-to-sensitive man in the midst of a corrupt and brutal world. In this nearly perfect neo-noir; the lead falls for a woman who may well be the death of him. In this film the woman is sixteen year old orphan Mei Mei (Zhu Lin)...

This year is the golden anniversary of the gleaming hero called Iron Man and the past five of those 50 years have been a turbo-charged ride to the heights of American pop culture. Before Iron Man (2008) the armored avenger was a second-tier Marvel character with a clunky name. Now he’s the world’s favorite canned ham and the bright knight of the box office.
On Tuesday night, Entertainment Weekly and Disney’s Marvel Studios will mark the anniversary with a free and early screening of Iron Man 3 for 600 fans, all of them either local EW subscribers (who were contacted...

This has been bothering me since the recent Iron Man 3 trailer premiered. We have known for a while now that the Extremis comic was being incorporated into the story for the new film, but never to what extent. We do know that Rebecca Hall and Guy Pierce are playing doctors Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian, the designers of the Extremis virus, but not whether they would be altered by it. I was less concerned with them as I was with the two images above. What if the Extremis storyline is a...

Glenn Close and Nick Nolte are set to star in "Always on My Mind," which centers on an aging rock star (Nolte) as he succumbs to Alzheimers, with his wife (Close) left to navigate his steady degeneration. "Rock of Ages" creator Chris D'Arenzio wrote the script and is attached to direct. Joe Neurater and Felipe Marino of Occupant Entertainment are producing. Occupant also has the Mia Wasikowska project "Madame Bovary" in the pipeline. Close and Nolte both nabbed Oscar nominations last year, for "Albert Knobbs" and "Warrior," respectively. Nolte will be seen next in Warner Bros.' troubled "Gangster Squad," which has been delayed and subjected to re-shoots in the aftermath of the Aurora movie theater shootings in July. Warning: Spoilers for Nolan’s films ahead!
The best directors deliver an experience that goes beyond the product being sold to you. They dedicate themselves to their craft, and in doing so put their own personal stamp on it. This infuses their films with their personal sensibilities; delivering to the audience a work that is easily identified as theirs. Over time, as a director’s body of work grows, keen audiences can identify certain themes, tropes, and character motivations common to that director’s style. Such directors include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, Peter Jackson, and Ridley Scott, to name but a random few. Now, with seven full films under his belt, it is safe to say that Christopher Nolan falls into this category as well.

The overriding theme of Christopher Nolan's movies is a gloss on Guns 'N Roses: "Use your illusion." Guy Pierce's self-deluding Memento protagonist precedes Al Pacino's cop in Insomnia, whose titular sleeplessness makes it similarly impossible for him to separate truth from paranoid misperception. The Prestige places illusion front and center as a tale of dueling magicians, while Inception concerns implanting false memories to achieve desirable results. This interest extends to Nolan's Batman trilogy: not so much Batman Begins, but certainly The Dark Knight, in which the Caped Crusader agrees to let Gotham City think he's the bad guy for their own protection.
The Dark Knight Rises considers the fallout from following Axl Rose's advice. At its opening, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has entered his Howard Hughes recluse stage. His preoccupation during recent years has been developing a nuclear fusion project designed to provide cheap,...

Cameron Diaz is reportedly attached to star in revenge comedy "The Other Woman," which also has Kristen Wiig in talks. Penned by Black List alumni Melissa Stack ("I Want to F--- Your Sister," which made the top of the list in 2007), the film follows a woman (Diaz) who discovers she is the other woman in a love triangle. She meets and teams up with the wife in order to give the philandering husband his just desserts. Up next for Diaz is the Coens' "Gambit," Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" and "Agent: Century 21," a comedy about a real estate agent who gets mixed up with a Mexican drug lord (Benicio Del Toro). Wiig, meanwhile, will star in the upcoming indie comedy "The Skeleton Twins" opposite her former SNL colleague Bill Hader, and is currently shooting the romantic comedy "Hateship, Friendship" with Guy Pierce. She is also attached to Sean Penn's "The Comedian.

Everyone channels a flood of emotions when watching the trailer for a wicked-sweet blockbuster like "Iron Man 3," but what's going on in your subconscious mind?
Chances are really good it looks a hella lot like this ridiculously funny "Literal" recut of next summer's Marvel Studios blockbuster, courtesy of singer/lyricist Toby Turner, a.k.a. Tobuscus.
Known for his video game commentaries, Tobuscus puts a true level of passion into his singing greek chorus, making everything from Guy Pierce ("don't trust him in any movie") to the Paramount logo something worthy of song:
"Breath, Punch.
Cabin pressure compromised,
everybody gonna die.
('Cept the hot one)"
For those of you who are really digging the groove on this track, you can actually buy it on iTunes for 99 cents, where user Rhino442 writes, "I like this song. The slow tempo with the catchy lyrics makes this a really good song. Completely worth the buy.

Kristen Wiig and and her former SNL co-star Bill Hader are attached to star in the indie comedy "The Skeleton Twins," which will be co-produced by brothers Mark and Jay Duplass and the financier, Venture Forth. "Black Swan" scribe Mark Heyman wrote the script, which will be directed by Craig Johnson ("True Adolescents"). Luke Wilson is also set to star in the film, which centers on estranged twins Maggie (Wiig) and Milo (Hader) who happen to both cheat death on the same day, causing Maggie to question her marriage to Lance (Wilson), and Milo to return to an ex-lover. Wiig stars in the upcoming "Imogene," which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival. She also will star opposite Guy Pierce in "Hateship, Friendship." Hader will be in "The To Do List," which releases in February 2013. This isn't the first big-screen outing in which Hader and Wiig have been cast together; they played goofy husband-and-wife park.

When I first watched Alien, I was damn near petrified when I saw my first xenomorph. Let me back up – make that before I saw my first xenomorph. The crew of the Nostromo, including soon heroine to be Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), followed a distress signal to an alien spacecraft. It was a foolish move to say the least since the Nostromo contained a simple commercial towing crew. These weren’t the military vets of Aliens, just ordinary workers.
Dallas (Tom Skerritt), Kane (John Hurt), and Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) followed the beacon. It was a horror movie no, no. Never follow the beacon. Duh. The group discovered the remains of a large alien carcass, which had been ripped apart from the inside. Sadly, that didn’t signal a big fat “turn around, runnn.” Then, Kane discovered an egg plantation. Right away, I remember my brain screaming an unheard “holy crap.” Next,...

Update: "Honestly there's a 100 people that want to kill me. But I hope I can protect the one thing I can't live without," says Tony Stark in the first official trailer for Marvel's "Iron Man 3." Unfortunately, from the looks of things, the billionaire superhero has some tough competition to face in the form of two villains. The clip, which you can watch above, shows Tony's cliffside mansion being blown to pieces as he and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) run for cover. We also get two very brief looks at James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) along with the two main bad guys, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pierce) and The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). "Iron Man 3" will hit theaters May 3, 2013. Earlier: Following in the meta-tradition of teasers for trailers, Marvel has released a 17-second clip of "Iron Man 3." In the third installment, Robert Downey Jr. returns as the self-aggrandizing philanthropist, playboy superhero. Details surrounding...

So Tom Hanks will be in a movie whose first word is “saving” and Paul Giamatti will be in it too. No, it’s not Saving Private Ryan (although I applaud your educated guess), but it is in fact a Walt Disney biopic during the crucial moments of making Mary Poppins (quite different from Saving Private Ryan, now isn’t it?). Set to come out sometime in 2014, the film surely has many people wondering about what can be with Walt Disney’s imagination and reputation.
The movie will follow Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) in his 20+ year ordeal in trying to attain the rights to Mary Poppins by author P.J. Travers (Emma Thompson). Since the actual Mary Poppins story is a sort of autobiographical story between Travers and her father (played by Colin Farrell in the film), it was the main reason why the real Walt Disney had such a...

Tonight you have the pleasure of listening to Jeff Konopka, Shawn Savage and Heather Seebach (guest from *Viewer Discretion Advised) take on the new Total Recall remake and discuss the original flick. Will it live up to the original? Let these folks fill you in on what’s what. While I haven’t seen the remake I can let you know that I, like so many geeky three boob observing Sci Fi dorks before me, love the Arnold original. Three boobs. Quaid. Give them the Air! You pick your favorite quote, special effect, action sequence and you’ll have a discussion with your peers in no time. Oh, and don’t be a hater until you’ve at least experienced this remake yourself. That’s prejudice (soap box time).

We’ve previously written on Criminal Complex about how much we all want to hang out with Robert Pattinson and do human being things, like show each other how to put on cummerbunds and churn butter and stuff.
He’s continuing his hot-streak following one of my most eagerly awaited films, Cosmopolis, and his signing on for so many fantastic sounding crime flicks. And he’s got the clout to get these suckas made, too, which helps.
Now, we’ve previously mentioned The Rover, but it looks like this David Michôd flick is finally green-lit (which means the cops have okayed it to be stabbed in prison) and will start going into production, according to THR. Screen Australia will provide funding for the ‘futuristic western,’ set to star Guy Pierce (star of L.A. Confidential, my dreams) and the aforementioned Pattinson. If that isn’t enough to get you psyched for this one,...

1.) Robert Pattinson racks up another interesting post-Twilight role, joining Guy Pierce in the futuristic western The Rover for writer-director David Michod (Animal Kingdom). Set in the Australian desert, the film follows Eric, a man who has left every semblance of human kindness behind him as he joins an injured gang member, Rey, to hunt down Rey's gang after they steal the last of Eric's possessions. [THR] 2.) Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Ruth Wilson have joined the previously cast Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell in Disney's Saving Mr. Banks. John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) directs the true story of Walt Disney's (Hanks) 14-year courtship for the rights to Mary Poppins from author P.L. Travers (Thompson). Farrell and Wilson will play Travers' parents in flashbacks, while Giamatti will play her chauffeur while she's visiting Los Angeles. Schwartzman will play Richard Morton Sherman, a songwriter who penned a number of classic Disney tunes.

Today sees the release of a brand new poster for the upcoming prohibition-era thriller Lawless. Directed by John Hillcoat and featuring a very talented all-star cast that boasts names like Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, the film is starting to look like a serious awards contender.
Lawless is based on Matt Bondurant’s novel The Wettest Country in the World, which is not a belated spin-off from Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, but instead is the true story of a gang of bootlegging brothers (Hardy, Labeouf and Clarke) and their encounters with the mob and law enforcement.
This poster doesn’t really give us much to go on, other than the fact that Shia Labeouf seems confused and slightly angered by his shotgun. He definitely doesn’t look like a happy camper.
Speaking of Labeouf, this is the actor’s chance...

That being said, and it makes me sorry to admit, but I don't think it works. Schmoes and the like may get excited just by seeing that Guy Pierce, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Tom Hardy are in a movie together, but I doubt that the general public would. Meaning that this poster is then selling the movie on Tom Hardy's cigar chomping skills, whatever implication the title might bear, and the period costumes. Ridley Scott's Prometheus chronicles the previous events that occurred before Alien. While not a direct prequel, it does serve to answer a few questions that remained a mystery in the original film. The film has been met with generally positive reviews, and can be seen in theaters now. Now, some images have surfaced online that were featured in the upcoming book, Prometheus: The Art of the Film. They seem to be a few unused concepts that were created to generate some ideas for the film. However, even though they were directly disregarded, some ideas behind them were used in the film, and contain Spoilers. Check them out: Thanks to AVPGalaxy for the images Prometheus Stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Logan-Marshall green, Idris Elba, Guy Pierce, and is directed by Ridley Scott(Alien, Blade Runner). To celebrate the presence of Safe in UK cinemas, here’s an updated list of action hero Jason Statham’s very best films to date…
2011 was without doubt Jason Statham’s best year so far. He managed a grand total of four cinematic releases, though at one point that total was nearer six, until 13 seemed to vanish without a trace and Safe was sensibly pushed back to 2012, thus avoiding an overload of machismo greater than the average human could cope with.
As a result of his insane productivity, our long-standing list of his greatest movies so far needed an update, an event that will hopefully need to be done annually, as he continues to be one of the most productive actors working today.
Statham’s still sensibly chosen to concentrate on making action movies and thrillers all squarely aimed at an adult audience, providing a constant and much-needed fix for someone as bloodthirsty as me,...

I remember the days when you used to be able to head out to the video shop or cinema and feel optimistic about what lay ahead. These magical days were way before my time, a kind of 'assumed memory' of what it was like to anticipate new movies, to have hope beyond Hollywood's formula.
As you might guess, it has been a while since the release of a particular film - in this case Ridley Scott's Alien prequel/sidequel Prometheus - has excited and delighted me this much. You know the feeling; you continuously check the calendar and religiously watch the trailer online. You crowbar the subject into every conversation, in the hope that you will convince people that it is just as important to them as it is to you. There hasn’t been a film that has evoked such hysteria within me for years...until news reached...

Luc Besson is one of the most prolific, hard working individuals in the film industry today. His talents range from writing, producing to directing. While his dexterity may be enough for a host of people to shower the Frenchman with praise, it stands to reason that, notwithstanding a few exceptions, he has made the sort of films which attract the male adolescent crowd. On occasion he will be the progenitor of something that strives for more, Léon: The Professional and the upcoming The Lady being two examples, but for the most part they resemble Taken, Nikita, The Fifth Element, Transporter and District 13: Ultimatum. Besson gave birth to the original idea behind Lockout, starring Aussie Guy Pierce, then handed over the screenwriting and directing reigns to Irishmen Stephen Saint Leger and James Mather,...

Yesterday we reported that Guy Pierce would be playing as Peter Weyland, revealing another the connection between Prometheus and Alien franchise. Though many had thought the character was there for the sake of the connection, a new video has surfaced that would make us think otherwise. This new video at Ted (or Technology, Entertainment and Design), which has previously featured talks from J.J. Abrams, has Pearce talking about advancements in technology, the history behind the titan Prometheus and how the gods were angered when he stole the gift of fire, and the plans he has for the future, like androids. He claims that humans are the gods now and that he doesn’t settle for second. The link was found on MovieViral, thanks to Firstshowing for the video.
Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
