A joke authored by Elon Musk has turned into a merchandising opportunity for one of YouTube’s most iconic channels. Smosh, the comedy hub founded by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, has started selling Dickipedia-branded shirts after Musk mentioned that portmanteau as part of a dig against Wikipedia.
Musk called out Wikipedia on X, the platform he acquired a year ago. “Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation wants so much money? It certainly isn’t needed to operate Wikipedia. You can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone,” Musk wrote. “I will give them a billion dollars if they change their name to Dickipedia.”
Even if Wikipedia C0-Founder Jimmy Wales wanted to call Musk’s bluff, he’d still have to negotiate with the owners of Dickipedia.com. As it turns out, that domain belongs to Smosh. It’s kind of a funny...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will get his second opportunity to appoint a U.S. senator with the death of the Golden State’s senior stateswoman on Thursday — putting him in a position he said he dreaded earlier this month. “I don’t want to make another appointment,” he told Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd. “I don’t think the people of California want me to make another appointment.”
In December 2020, Newsom appointed Alex Padilla, then California’s secretary of state, to fill the opening created by Kamala Harris’ ascension to the vice presidency.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic powerbroker who served California and her political party for more than 30 years, becoming the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, died Thursday night, her office has confirmed. She was 90.
James Sauls, chief of staff to Sen. Feinstein, released the following statement this morning:
“Sadly, Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, D.C. Her passing is a great loss for so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California that she dedicated her life to serving. Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation. There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother.

New Mexico teenager Enrique Padilla, 19, who allegedly shot a man dead in a weekend dispute over reserved movie seats, has been captured.
The dispute that sparked the shooting happened late Sunday night in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ironically, the incident happened before a screening of the Jennifer Lawrence comedy film, No Hard Feelings.
Padilla stands accused of one count each of homicide, shooting at an occupied building, and tampering with evidence. He was arrested and charged Monday after being discovered hiding in some bushes near an emergency exit for the theater. He also suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen in the altercation, but police have not said how that happened.
Padilla was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment after he was captured early Monday morning, police said. Michael Tenorio, 52, was shot and killed. He died at the scene despite an off-duty police officer administering CPR.

Anthony Padilla is reuniting with Smosh–and he, along with Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox, are buying the digital comedy brand from Rhett & Link.
Padilla and Hecox met in sixth grade and were still best friends when they first launched Smosh on YouTube in 2005. Together they amassed dozens of cast and crew members, millions of subscribers, and became one of the most recognizable creator-led media companies in online video.
But then, in 2017, Padilla left. He cited creative differences, but it was clear there was also a rift between him and Hecox.
“By the time Anthony left Smosh, our friendship was not really that good,” Hecox told Variety. Last year, the duo got back in touch, and “really hit it off,” he added. “It’s kind of freaky how well this has all fallen into place. Our friendship had to end to be able to come back together.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee revived the prospects for a long-proposed bill that would bolster print and broadcast news outlets in their negotiations with tech giants.
The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday in a 14-7 vote.
The bill would create a “safe harbor” from antitrust laws for a period of six years years for newspapers, broadcast stations and digital journalism outlets, giving them more market power in the face of competition for advertising from Google and Facebook. If publishers are unable to come to terms with platforms on a deal for their content, an arbitrator would ultimately determine the rates.
Lawmakers who champion the legislation, led by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) and Sen. John Kennedy (R-la), say that it is needed in the face of the decline of local journalism, which has seen the scaling back of newsroom coverage and severe cuts in staffing.

Washington, Sep 15 (Ians) The US Senate Homeland Security Committee grilled executives from Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter over privacy and moderation failures on their respective platforms in recent years, saying that they “keep avoiding sharing really very important information with us”.
TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas, Twitter General Manager of Consumer and Revenue, Jay Sullivan, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan testified before the panel late on Wednesday.
“I’ll be honest, I’m frustrated that all of you (who) have a prominent seat at the table when these business decisions are made were not more prepared to speak to specifics about your product development process, even when you are specifically asked if you would bring specific numbers to us today,” lamented committee Chair Senator Gary Peters.

California Governor Gavin Newsom made headlines last night when he told MSNBC’s Joy Reid that he would appoint an African American woman to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca) should she resign her seat.
“We have multiple names in mind, and the answer is yes,” he told Reid.
But asked about his statement again on Tuesday on ABC’s The View, Newsom clarified that he has “no expectation” that Feinstein will do so.
“Are you implying that she should step down before her term is over, because some folks thought that meant that you were sort of pushing her out,” co-host Sunny Hostin asked him.
“Quite the contrary,” Newsom said. “She’s one of my oldest, closest friends and allies, and I say that literally and not figuratively.
Newsom called Feinstein an “incredible mentor to me,” and said that he had merely been asked the question of what would happen if she did retire.
