Kevin B. Lee (left) in conversation with Tsai Ming-liang.Even though he didn't have a new film to premiere, Tsai Ming-liang was the guest of honor at this year's Locarno Film Festival. Tsai received the Pardo alla carriera achievement award at the Piazza Grande; was the subject of Moving Portraits, an exhibition at the Il Rivellino gallery; presented a screening of his 2020 film Days; and delivered several talks and masterclasses. One such talk was “On the Future of Cinema”: the centerpiece of a Locarno Film Festival initiative exploring the medium’s technological and cultural transformations. The face of Locarno’s Future of Cinema programming is the scholar, media artist, and critic Kevin B. Lee. A prolific video essayist, Lee has produced over 350 works of audiovisual criticism, and with his award-winning Transformers: The Premake (2014), he introduced and popularized the “desktop documentary” format. She has been called art’s most powerful person, a tireless questioner of humanity in the digital age. As the great German artist unveils a living work made of ferns and beer crates, she talks about her fights and victories
‘I wanted to see if the plants could contribute something,” says Hito Steyerl, sitting in the office of her Berlin gallery. “I feel it’s a good idea to take humans out of the equation a bit.”
Described as a post-internet artist – someone who uses the tools of digital technology to tackle broader social issues beyond web culture –Steyerl is credited as the creator of one of the works in Dear Earth: Art and Hope in a Time of Crisis, a new group show at London’s Hayward Gallery. But in a way the true creative force behind the piece, called Green Screen, isn’t her at all. It’s not even human.

Last year at the 2022 Berlinale I had the uncanny experience of watching Hito Steyerl’s documentary The Empty Center in a 75-seat theater hidden away beneath The Sony Center. If you’re unfamiliar with The Sony Center in Berlin, take a second to Google it, or think back to the sterile postmodern backdrops of Brian De Palma’s Passion, in which architect Helmut Jahn’s eight-building complex plays a prominent role. The Empty Center is, in part, about the obscene land grab that occurred after German reunification, when multinational corporations like Sony, Daimler-Benz and Abb swept in to stake […]

From left: Stefano Knuchel, Khesrau Behrouz, Laurie Anderson, and Maya Shenfeld. On our way to Locarno from the airport, a fellow Critics Academy participant told me that he had made a list of 37 films he wanted to see, while I glanced at my own list feeling underprepared. In the end, he didn’t reach that number—none of us did. We had our writings to do, the glittering Lake Maggiore to bask in, and daily necessities, like scurrying between venues and finding time for meals. When the goal of festival-going is to take in as many films as possible, attending a 24-hour long talk on the “Future of Attention” may not seem like the best way to resolve these anxieties. Film festivals run on an attention economy. It was a statistically risky decision for me to pitch this article instead of several smaller film reviews, since I didn’t know...

Few topics in video game circles elicit more groans than the debate about whether games should be considered artworks. Advocates for games want to see them garner the same cultural recognition as books, films, or paintings, and use “art” as shorthand for achieving that status. But in the rush to declare “Super Mario Bros.” a great work of art, we may be skipping over the intricacies of both how artists who may or may not think of themselves as game developers are using games in their work and how less mechanical “interactions” in and around games construct a complicated cultural significance for the still young artform.
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago’s new exhibition, “I Was Raised on the Internet” isn’t a video game art show, and yet the concept and impact of games are all over the place. “In broad terms, this exhibition is about how the...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. James N. Kienitz Wilkins' Public Hearing (2012) is playing July 11 - August 10, 2017 on Mubi in most countries around the world.By now the influence of the Internet on contemporary film and video art has been long established and theorized. More often than not, discussions have centered around aesthetics concerns, be they theories of the low-resolution media (noting Hito Steyerl interest in "poor images") or the splintered nature of tabbed browsing. Less consideration has been placed on the banality that pervades much of the material we find (or perhaps pass over) online. With a number of projects in his increasingly broad body of work, Brooklyn-based artist James N. Kienitz Wilkins has examined the politics or poetics undergirding that which might immediately seem to be neutral and unremarkable, such as the coded racism of stock images in his film B-Roll with...

According to another visitor there last week, the exhibit is a 23-minute video meant to be enjoyed while relaxing in lounge chairs. As he tends to, Shia took his own approach ... with a friend.
