Earlier this year, the enfant terrible photographer who calls himself Jr made his New York City Ballet debut, wrapping the promenade of the David H. Koch Theater in an enormous photographic mural. The result has been Instagrammed nearly as often as Ellen’s Oscar selfie was, and a relationship with Nycb was born. On April 29, it will bear fruit, as Jr’s first foray into ballet—a collaboration with the video director and musician Woodkid, with an assist from Nycb’s Peter Martins himself—premieres. It’s called Les Bosquets, and, he says, it “is about the French riots of 2005. I was even thinking of taking the dancers to the streets of Paris. I am sure that these two worlds that are completely opposite, the projects of Paris and the ballet world, could actually get together.” They certainly do cross paths in Jr himself, a graffiti brat turned sophisticated photographer,...

New York -- When Paul McCartney took a bow at the opening night gala for "Ocean's Kingdom" last Thursday, the record will show it was the most dramatic moment of the evening. One reviewer noted "a large contingent of ladies screaming like it was 1964"; another wrote "there were cheers and screams" from the A-list crowd just at the mention of McCartney's name. But it wasn't the former Beatle's ballet that set their hearts aflutter.
"Every single person in that theater ... is there for one reason -- not for the ballet, because of Paul," acknowledged Peter Martins, the New York City Ballet's ballet master in chief and the show's choreographer, in a preview for the show.
By the time the matinee performance took the stage Sunday, with McCartney no longer there, it was just another day at the ballet. The house was filled with an older, more seasoned audience, who were there for the ballet,...

The New York City Ballet's Ballet Master in Chief, Peter Martins, is well-aware that nobody is going to the ballet tonight to see the ballet.
"Every single person in that theater... is there for one reason -- not for the ballet, because of Paul," Martins said of the Paul McCartney-scored ballet, "Ocean's Kingdom," which premieres at the New York City Ballet tonight. In a new interview, McCartney and Martins explain how it all coalesced.
According to McCartney, he had already made some headway on the ballet score before he even got involved.
"I started a piece of music for another project that didn't work out... so when Peter asked me would I consider, I immediately thought of this other piece of music and I thought, yeah, this is what I should do with this other piece of music," McCartney said.

Beatles legend Paul McCartney is collaborating with the New York City Ballet to write his first original orchestral score for ballet. He will be partnering with Nycb's Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins on a World Premiere ballet for the 2011 to 2012 season.
The new ballet will debut at the company's Fall Gala performance on September 22. It will also include George Balanchine's "Union Jack," the extravagant tribute to Britain featuring nearly all of the company's dancers.
Martin said, "We are so honored to have Paul working with us that I thought we would pay tribute to this extraordinary man by performing Union Jack on the same program."
The World Premiere performance will be followed by additional McCartney/Martins ballet during the course of the 2011-2012 season.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and Suri Cruise posed with the ballerinas backstage after attending a performance of The Nutcracker in NYC last night. The four-year-old looked a little more into her candy than the photo op, though she gave a shy smile when one of the sugar plum fairies showed off her wand. Katie and Tom also chatted with the show's Master in Chief, Peter Martins. Katie may be making a return to the stage herself, since she's in talks to star in Extremities on Broadway. The Cruises just went from one chilly climate to another, traveling from Vancouver where he was shooting Mission: Impossible 4 to the East Coast for Katie's birthday weekend. She turns 32 today, one month after celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with Tom. He loves to go all out for his girls, so there's probably more fun up his sleeve for this evening. ">New York City was popping with A-list gala events on Thursday, April 29, and Gw was on the horns of a dilemma. Would the night be spent with “Gwynnie” (Gwyneth Paltrow) at the Frick Museum’s celebration for Chopard’s 75th Anniversary? Would it be spent with “Jon B.J.” (Jon Bon Jovi) at the 4th annual Dkms Linked for Leukemia gala at Cipriani 42nd Street? Or would it be spent with “S.J.P.” (Sarah Jessica Parker) at the opening night of the New Choreography and Music Festival of the New York City Ballet? As a huge fan of ballet, Gw could not resist spending the evening at the David Koch Theater. There could not have been a more revelatory way for Ballet Master-in-Chief Peter Martins to herald his company’s 50th anniversary than with world premiere of two new works—Why Am I Not Where You Are, choreographed by Benjamin Millepied,...

Santiago Calatrava has often been called the most lyrical of the current crop of starchitects. Today, the New York City Ballet announced that it will give the Spaniard a chance to apply his architectural and engineering skills to the most lyrical of the performing arts.
Nycb's ballet master Peter Martins has invited Caltrava to design several multi-functional stage sets for four world-premiere ballets during the company's spring season, which begins on May 4. The sets are expected to embody Calatrava's recurring themes of movement and flight, an inspiration made visible in his work for the Milwaukee Art Museum, whose roof sports two steel "wings" made of 36 fins that can open when the wind off Lake Michigan isn't too stiff, and his design for the transportation hub at the World Trade Center, whose spiky roofline was inspired by the idea of a child releasing a dove.
