The cash-strapped Red Cross gets new ideas; students get real-world experience.
One day last spring, Serin Inan and Yina Ma, two design students at Parsons the New School, stepped up to the classroom podium, nervously giggling. And for good reason: They were about to detail to executives from a global humanitarian aid organization, the Red Cross, its problems--ranging from logistics to branding--and how design could make it better. (All in their second language of English, no less.)
The presentation was part of the school’s new class, “Design for the Red Cross” and was a first look for the group’s regional top brass to see what problems and solutions a designer’s eye could come up with.
Humanitarian design classes at design schools have been steadily growing over the last few years, fueled as much by current trends as student demand. Parsons has been among the early adopters, partnering...

Development and financing budgets at broadcaster's film-making arm return to pre-downturn level
Channel 4 is increasing its movie production arm Film4's annual budget by 20% to £10m.
This budget increase for 2010 returns Film4's budget for film development and financing to the level it was before the economic downturn.
Channel 4's commitment to funding UK film-making was included in the broadcaster's new public service remit for the first time in the Digital Economy Act, which passed into law last month.
David Abraham, the new Channel 4 chief executive who started his job yesterday, said at a pre-Cannes reception for Film4 last night: "Film4 embodies all that's great about Channel 4's place in our creative culture. For 28 years it has played a distinctive role in the British film industry and we are delighted that this has now been formally acknowledged in the update to Channel 4's remit contained in the Digital Economy Act.
