Oh, Motto. What’s a Motto with you? You upped your game just when it counted. You never faced elimination. You finally revealed you have 12 toes. And, apparently, you lost the coin toss and allowed your fellow rookie, Chris Mendonca, to use your shared first name. But why, oh, why did you wait until right before the two-hour “Hell’s Kitchen” finale this Friday at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Fox to announce that you had second thoughts and opted to go back to Baton Rouge to use what you learned to raise the culinary standard of the Louisiana city?

Yes, it has been one hell of a rollercoaster ride on the 18th season of “Hell’s Kitchen.” For one, Gordon Ramsay decided to dump the much-touted “Rookies vs. Veterans” theme in episode 4 and went back to the usual gender-separated teams. Returning chef Jen Gavin accused Ramsay of sabotaging her garnish and was never seen again after episode 3, while rookie Chris Mendonca had to leave the show before the fifth dinner service for on-going mental problems just as his star was rising.

But let’s treat those jarring events just like Ramsay approaches mangled salmon, barely cooked steak and one cremated pork chop – simply toss them away. Instead, write down 8 p.m. Et/Pt and circle February 8 on your calendar so you remember to tune into Fox that night. Because that is when the two-hour special finale airs.

It’s truly been one heck of a “Hell’s Kitchen” Season 18, starting with the fact that Gordon Ramsay trashed the much-touted “Rookies vs. Veterans” concept in episode 4 and reverted back to the usual gender-based teams. Returning chef Jen Gavin had a meltdown and accused Ramsay of sabotaging her garnish and was summarily shown the door in episode 3. And when rookie Chris Mendonca had just hit his stride and improved his game, his on-going mental issues caused him to leave of his own accord before the fifth dinner service.

After many poorly made risottos, lots of too-rare steaks and one very charred pork chop, we are now down to the final four on this week’s episode 14 — the penultimate show before next’s two-episode finale — and there has bit of a change in the temperature.

We lost two chefs during last week’s episode of “Hell’s Kitchen.” I felt like Chris Mendonca, who took himself out of the game for mental health reasons, when he woefully asked Mia Castro, “Is it possible to have a good service?” This season, not really. Yes, the all-male Blue Team got their act together. But Red Team veterans Heather Williams and T Gregoire were more interested in blame games than serving their hungry patrons. Not that the so-called celebs at Hell’s Kitchen would want to chow down on their pitiful filets. Our recent poll tied to Episode 6 had 62 percent of respondents saying T had to go, but Heather was no great shakes, either. How did Friday’s episode, “Last Chef Standing,” play out? Scroll down for our minute-by-minute recap of “Hells Kitchen” Season 18, Episode 7.

This has been quite a dramatic Season 18 of “Hell’s Kitchen,” what with returning Season 4 chef Jen Gavin accusing Chef Gordon Ramsay of lying and sabotaging her performance, resulting in her getting the boot during the second service. Meanwhile, a fed-up Ramsay decided to dump the much-touted “Veterans vs. Rookies” format by the fourth episode after both teams had a disastrous dinner service. He went back to splitting up the cooks by gender, with the ladies in blue and the men in red. Then last week, just when rookie chef Chris Mendonca managed to serve his best dish yet — a lobster shepherd’s pie that scored a perfect 10 — he began to suffer from mental health issues caused by an accident nine months before and had to leave the show.

Previously on Season 18 of “Hell’s Kitchen,” a giant fish fell from the ceiling — just for the halibut – and the newly formed all-female Blue Team won the seafood challenge involving seven dishes using different techniques. But then came dinner service and Gizzy Barton let her nerves get the better of her as she messed up her lamb chops while teammate Mia Castro was compelled to commit a no-no by slicing up wellingtons. But, unexpectedly, it was Season 6 runner-up Keven Cottle who Chef Gordon Ramsay sent packing after he turned his salmon filets into rubber. How did Friday’s episode, titled “Hot Potato,” play out? Scroll down for our minute-by-minute “Hells Kitchen” recap of Season 18, Episode 6.

“Hell’s Kitchen” is back on home base on Fox after skipping a week due to the World Series. Just to jog your memory, the previous episode had a whole lotta shaking-up going on as Chef Gordon Ramsay decided to deep-six the Rookies vs. Veterans premise of Season 18 after both teams stumbled through dinner service. Now, the Red Team is all male and the Blue Team is all female. We will soon see how that works out on Episode 5, “Fish Out of Water.”
9:00 p.m. The recap of last week made me nostalgic after seeing how the Rookies came on strong in that weird snow-themed challenge involving soup and hearing the All-Stars grouse about always losing. Shock, awe and a lot of smoking followed in the wake of Chef Ramsay’s switcheroo of the players. As Ex-Veteran Bret Hauser put it so elegantly, “That was unexpected as ‘bleep.’”

After a week off, we will finally get to see whether Chef Gordon Ramsay’s demolition of Season 18’s much-touted premise of Rookies vs. Veterans will be a recipe for heightening the level of competition on “Hell’s Kitchen” this Friday. So far in our recent poll, 40 percent of Gold Derby respondents thought that just after four episodes, the show’s top chef was too quick to dispatch with the premise after being bleeped-off by both teams’ sub-par performances.
But 10 percent think that going back to the usual formula of splitting the Blue and Red teams by gender will allow the seven women still on board to truly shine. Similarly, 10 percent thought an all-male team of seven would make the men rise to the occasion and kick butt.

“Hell’s Kitchen” fans looking to watch the fifth episode of “Rookies vs. Veterans” on Friday, October 26 may find themselves turning as red as uncooked lamb. Fox has put the reality TV show on the back burner for one week due to the World Series championship between the Red Sox and the Dodgers. But rest assured, a network rep has confirmed to Gold Derby that Episode 5 of Season 18 will return to the schedule as planned on Friday, November 2.

Season 4 returnee Jen Gavin couldn’t stand the heat she was getting from Chef Gordon Ramsay last week on “Hell’s Kitchen” after their kerfuffle over missing duck garnish, and her mouthing off got her sent packing. That means both the Veterans and the Rookies have lost one chef-testant now.
To cool things off, this week’s episode is titled “When Hell Freezes Over,” which could also be the answer to the question of when Jen might be invited back. As Rookie Chris Mendonca says, “That’s loony tunes at its finest, bro. Jen had an opportunity that people would kill for. To come back and she spits on Chef Ramsey’s face like that? What the (bleep) were you thinking?” Below, check out our “Hells Kitchen” recap for Season 18, Episode 4 that aired Friday, October 19 on Fox.
Jen soon becomes stale news, however, as Chris and his Red Team mates...

Season 18 of “Hell’s Kitchen” has turned the format tables a bit by welcoming back a Blue Team of past players – essentially giving them second chances to win — and pitting them against a Red Team of Rookies. So far, newbie Scott Popovic, a restaurant owner from Cleveland, and Jen Gavin, an Atlanta-based returnee from Season 4, have been booted off.
In this week’s exclusive clip, however, it appears another Rookie might bite the dust as Chris Mendonca of Boston appears to have allowed a pork chop to be cremated to a crisp in an oven meant to be used for fish. The burnt pig flesh is discovered just as Chef Gordon Ramsay – he who must be obeyed – calls out an order of a pork entrée for a VIP table where documentarian Morgan Spurlock of “Super Size Me” fame is seated and discovers it is barely done as sits on a grill.

So far during the first-ever “Rookies vs. Veterans” season of “Hell’s Kitchen” the returning chefs seem to have a leg up on the newbies. Last week Chef Gordon Ramsay made his first cut of Season 18, sending home rookie Scott Popvic and hissing, “I won’t remember him by tomorrow.” But this week a veteran is on the proverbial chopping block. Gold Derby exclusively revealed that Season 4 favorite Jen Gavin went into a fiery outburst during Friday’s episode, accusing Ramsay of “lying” about her missing duck garnish. Did she end up turning in her jacket?

Last week’s Season 18 premiere of “Hell’s Kitchen” was a fanciful amuse bouche compared to this week’s heavy-duty challenges faced by the 16 chefs participating in the show’s first-ever Rookies vs. Veterans showdown.
No one was sent packing as newbie Mia Castro came out on top and scored a fancy dinner for the red-team Rookies after she and blue-team returning player Kevin Cottle both scored 5 out of 5 on a signature dish challenge. The bottom feeders were mouthy vet Jen Gavin and name-dropper newbie Scott Popovic, whose less-than-stellar creations both earned a low score of 2.
This week’s episode starts rather oddly with bagpipers and funereal floral arrangements. Chef Gordon Ramsay promises a farewell is in store and acts if Jocky, the blue team’s Scottish sous chef, might be taking his leave. Instead, what will depart is the dish he is holding in his hands. But before we learn what it is,...

Which returning chef on ‘Hell’s Kitchen: Rookies vs. Veterans’ Most deserves a second chance? [Poll]
For the first time ever, Fox’s reality TV show “Hell’s Kitchen” has pitted first-time players against returning chef-testants for what’s been dubbed “Rookies vs. Veterans.” In last week’s Season 18 premiere, fans were re-introduced to the eight veterans who entered the kitchen wearing silly wigs, glasses and prosthetic noses to initially trick the rookies into thinking they were newbies. Of the eight returnees, who Most deserves a second chance at becoming Gordon Ramsay‘s next head chef? Vote down in our poll below.

None of the chefs on the premiere episode of Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” Season 18, which stacks eight Veteran players against eight Rookies, went home last week even though the newbies won the first round against the returnees. This week, however, elimination is inevitable. Judging by this exclusive clip (watch it above), Cleveland restaurant owner Scott Popovic, the name-dropping Rookie, just might feel the wrath of host Gordon Ramsay after he gets totally flummoxed by confusing his name with that of Atlanta-based teammate Scotley Innis and then not knowing that the shrimp being paired with risotto is supposed to be cooked table side.

Considering that Scott didn’t do himself any favors on last week’s season premiere by overcooking the bass in his own signature dish and receiving a low score of 2 out of 5, he may be gone soon.
