The documentary “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution” is set to premiere globally on June 18 on Netflix. The feature-length documentary, the first of its kind to address this topic, examines the history of queer stand-up comedy as — according to its logline — “an instrument for social change over the past five decades, actively reflecting and challenging cultural norms and values.”
The film combines stand-up performances and talking head interviews, as well as archival materials featuring LGBTQ+ comedians, and includes Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Suzy Izzard, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Rosie O’Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob The Drag Queen and Trixie Mattel.
Historians interviewed for the documentary include Dave Holmes, Roger Mason, Shar Jossell, Susan Stryker and Kate Aurthur, Variety‘s Editor-at-Large.

In 2018, Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching" changed the mystery movie game by popularizing the "screen life" thriller, framing its action and ample surprises squarely within the confines of a computer screen. The film followed David (John Cho), a widower on the hunt for his missing teen daughter Margot (Michelle La), and it proved to be a surprise box office hit thanks to its novel concept and a great performance by Cho. With a $75 million box office haul against a shoestring budget, a follow-up film seemed like a no-brainer. That's where "Missing" comes in.
Released in spring 2023, "Missing" doesn't actually have much in common with "Searching" aside from an excellent lead actor, some producers and crew members, and a story about a missing family member. The movie is a standalone sequel, meaning it makes total sense even if you never saw "Searching." But "Missing" is anything but simple; with countless twists and...

Actors and filmmakers Steven Yeun, John Cho, Justin Chon and Lee Isaac Chung shared their thoughts on the appeal of Korean Diaspora cinema – as well as how they see the current wave of content coming out of Korea – in a philosophical but relaxed press conference at Busan International Film Festival.
Lee, who directed Oscar-winning Korean immigrant story Minari, said he was amazed by the reaction to the film whenever it was screened as “people from all walks of life would want to talk about their own experiences, people who’d never emigrated, but they’d moved to some place new and found it stressful. I wonder if the immigrant story just speaks to many experiences.”
Chon, an actor-director whose Jamojaya is screening at the festival, said: “It’s just an interesting dramatic situation – being in transition and also an underdog story. It was right there for the taking, to tell immigrant stories,...

The growing media and entertainment connections between Korean Americans and those Koreans living in Korea may be changing both communities, a public discussion at the Busan International Film Festival on Friday heard.
“Being in a room full of fans, feels like they accepted me as a member of the family. It feels like, culturally, Korea [may be in] a moment of transition,” said John Cho.
He was joined in the debate by actor-director Justin Chon (“Gook”), director Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and actor Steven Yeun, who are all either first or second generation immigrants to the U.S.
They were careful not to speak about their current movies or projects out of respect for SAG strike protocols, but the avoidance of promotional niceties permitted a wider-ranging and more philosophical discussion. It touched on issues of identity, generational change and the development of the post-pandemic, streaming-era global village.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has been through a fair amount of drama this year.
The turmoil started in May when Biff chairman Lee Yong-kwan appointed a close associate, Cho Jongkook, as managing director alongside artistic director Huh Moonyung, a decision that proved highly unpopular with some sectors of the local Korean film industry.
Huh resigned, and in an apparently unrelated development, was accused of sexual harassment by a festival employee around the same time. Lee also resigned, Cho was dismissed by the Biff board, and Oh Seok-geun, director of Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), who had supported Lee’s decision to hire Cho, also stepped down. By early July, four of the festival’s top management were out of the door.

In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors espouse their pet theories, hot takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
John Cho is a man of many talents, a star in any and every genre he explores. He’s built to be a leading man, even making our list of actors who need to star in a romantic comedy. Yet, in examining Cho’s impressive acting resume, his three most recent TV roles all tap into one archetype— that of the cowboy. From playing an intergalactic bounty hunter in Cowboy Bebop, to a tortured traveler in The Afterparty, or even a hunky farmer in Praise Petey, Cho is proving himself to be the modern Western hero.

Oh Seok-geun, director of Busan International Film Festival’s industry platform, Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), has resigned from his post, the latest in a string of resignations to rock the festival.
Posting the decision on the festival’s bulletin board and his private Facebook account, Oh said he hoped his resignation would contribute towards solving Busan’s current management troubles, without specifying the reasons.
“I submitted my resignation to Biff [Busan International Film Festival]. I decided this was the best choice I could make. I hope my decision will help solve the Biff situation,” said Oh when contacted by Deadline.
Oh became head of Acfm in 2021, when it was still being held in a limited hybrid form without international guests, due to the pandemic.

Oh Seok-geun, head of the Asian Contents and Film Market in Busan, has resigned.
Oh’s exit follows the resignation earlier this week of Busan International Film Festival chairman Lee Yong-kwan and the earlier departure of festival director Huh Moonyoung.
“I submitted my resignation to the Biff. I decided this was the best choice I could make. I hope my decision will help solve the Biff situation,” Oh told Variety. A spokesman for the festival confirmed that Oh had tendered his resignation and said that the organization will frame its response next week.
Busan, Asia’s biggest and most significant film festival has been plagued by management turmoil since early May, when Lee split the festival director’s job in two and appointed Cho Jongkook to the new position of managing director.
Huh offered his resignation shortly after and film industry guilds protested the appointment of Cho, suggesting that proper procedures had not been followed.

Lee Yong-kwan, one of the original founders of the Busan International Film Festival, says he is stepping down as the event’s chairman – this time with immediate effect.
He says the move is intended to defuse a morass of factional infighting and political interference surrounding Asian’s most prominent film festival.
A festival spokesman told Variety that the board of directors “has decided to persuade the chairperson to return. So, the resignation has not been accepted yet.”
Lee had already tendered his resignation once before, after a series of management missteps had thrown the event into disarray since early May. But he was subsequently persuaded to stick with the event until this year’s edition in October had been delivered.

Updated: Some 18 film industry guilds and trade associations are calling for urgent structural reform of the Busan International Film Festival. They point out that this year’s edition of the festival is looming less than 100 days away.
The festival’s management has made a succession of management missteps in recent weeks, including one that resulted in an official apology.
At the beginning of May, a decision to split the festival’s senior management in two by creating a new position for Cho Jongkook, was followed by consternation among guilds and the resignation of festival director Huh Moonyoung.
Festival chairman Lee Yong-kwan offered to resign for his clumsy handling of the situation. But that has not brought back Huh, who is now being investigated by the Center for Gender Equality in Korean Cinema after a complaint by a festival employee.
Huh has not responded to Variety’s emails or messages requesting comment.

The Busan International Film Festival has apologized for its mishandling of the resignation of its executive director Huh Moon-young and related sexual harassment allegations.
“We sincerely apologize over the sexual harassment case that occurred in the workplace,” Biff said in a Korean-language statement on Thursday.
Huh has publicly denied the allegations, though he has not replied to email and telephone requests for comment by Variety.
“We will faithfully conduct an internal probe in line with the Center for Gender Equality in Korean Cinema’s recommendations and come up with a system to prevent recurrences,” the festival said.
Huh announced his resignation on May 11, just days after the festival announced that it would create a joint managerial position and appoint Cho Jong-kook, a close friend of festival chairman Lee Yong-kwan, as managing director. Huh’s resignation was not immediately accepted and two industry guilds threatened to boycott the festival in support of him.

Less than four months from the opening ceremony of the 28th Busan International Film Festival (Biff), widely considered Asia’s most influential festival, the event remains mired in turmoil, with insiders increasingly agitating for a generational change. Korean industry figures tell The Hollywood Reporter they are worried both about the immediate organization of the next festival, set to run Oct. 4-13, and the potential damage to Biff’s global reputation, as allegations of cronyism and sexual misconduct continue to reverberate through the festival’s upper leadership ranks.
On Thursday, the festival’s board officially apologized for the mishandling of a recent sexual harassment allegation, saying that it would designate a sexual misconduct consulting center in the city of Busan to investigate the case.

It’s a compelling subject, for sure, but one on which no dramatic treatments have been nearly as astute or profound as what’s already been in the news.
Genevieve (Mina Sundwall of Netflix’s “Lost in Space”), who lost her boyfriend in a shooting and owes her teacher several assignments, doubts her test score is sufficient to get her into college and contemplates taking a gap year post-graduation. Ben (Alex R. Hibbert of “Moonlight”), who lost his friend and coworker at his part-time job, has transferred and quit the basketball team before dropping out of high school entirely. John (Cho), who lost his son, continues to coach at the school even though...

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

While some are still exploring the possibilities of film as a medium, there are those voices feeling we have reached its borders, and nothing new or original can be expressed. Given the background of literary modernism, this makes sense and it can certainly be observed if you take a look at what is showing at your local cinema. At the same time, we have to ask ourselves the question whether the statement is actually hinting at the possibility of people not having the right language or means in general to explore the medium fully. There is a lot to be learned from that discussion and apparently a lot of entertainment to be gained as well in the light of short features such as “Apocalypse Runner”, in which director Cho Hyun-min aims to delve deep into this debate while using the tropes of the post-apocalyptic genre.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Ghosted” on Apple TV+
“Ghosted” has arrived on Apple TV+, and with it come a few surprise visitors, in the form of some hilarious cameos. And, according to director Dexter Fletcher, at least one of those was a form of payback.
The movie follows Cole (Chris Evans) after he goes on the best date of his life with Sadie (Ana de Armas). Despite her not wanting anything serious, Cole believes this could be real. So, in what he believes to be a grand romantic gesture (but is actually erring dangerously close to stalking), he tracks her to London and attempts to surprise her.
The thing is, she’s a spy, and one that a lot of people want dead. Eventually, that results in a bounty being put on both their heads, and all of a sudden, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and John Cho all show up...

This post contains spoilers for "Ghosted."
Apple TV+ has gifted us all with what is sure to be another soon-forgotten streaming movie in the form of "Ghosted." As /Film's Josh Spiegel opined, "Ghosted" is a high concept in need of good writing, which basically means that while the idea of a regular guy falling for an international spy and becoming embroiled in her dangerous exploits wasn't necessarily doomed to fail, the script for "Ghosted" ensured that this particular attempt was. However, the film isn't without its charms, pairing Chris Evans and Ana de Armas to capitalize on the chemistry they showcased in previous projects such as "Knives Out," and generally just being a bit of fun.
And if you're a fan of Evans' Captain America, "Ghosted" even caters to you fine folks. In fact, from the outset the film seemed preoccupied with playing on the actor's Marvel Cinematic Universe history,...

Some MCU fans have been clamoring for more scenes between Chris Evans's Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes for quite some time. And while Marvel hasn't made that dream come true (yet?), Evans kind of has in his new movie "Ghosted," released April 21 on Apple TV+. Mackie and Stan both have cameos in the spy thriller/rom-com, which also stars Ana de Armas. Then another MCU star also pops up later in the movie: Ryan Reynolds. Technically, Reynolds and Evans have never been in an MCU movie together, though, since the former's Deadpool is only joining the universe with "Deadpool 3," but we still think it counts. We're breaking down the three MCU cameos ahead!
Who Does Anthony Mackie Play in "Ghosted?"
During the film, Evans's Cole chases de Armas's Sadie to London, thinking that it'll be a grand romantic gesture that will seal their burgeoning attraction.

Of all the unofficial holidays derived from an apocryphal bit police code, 4/20 is by far the most enduring. And just as “420” has gradually become entrenched as stoner shorthand for marijuana, the date April 20 has become an opportunity not just for college kids looking to indulge in a little extralegal fun, but also for drug law reformers and other advocacy groups to stump for a more reasonable national attitude toward America’s big green weed of choice.
And as marijuana laws have shifted over the years—from outright prohibition, to limited medicinal usage, to tightly regulated recreational use within certain states—marijuana themed movies have likewise evolved. Once upon a time, the only movies that even touched the subject of pot were hysterical propaganda pieces like Reefer Madness. Then, from the 1960s onward, weed became a popular (and hip) subject of broad comedy—in everything from Animal House to Annie Hall to Friday.

I had a chance to watch the first three episodes of the new Netflix limited series “Beef” last night, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked. It came inside of 10 minutes. Steven Yeun (as the suicidal contractor Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (as the wealthy but tortured boutique entrepreneur Amy Lau) are brilliant and deserving of all the praise that’s already been heaped upon them, and the narrative and production are irresistibly intriguing and discomforting. But what struck me was how quickly I forgot I was watching a production filled almost exclusively with Asian American actors. It all became rather seamless, even as the storyline alluded the players’ ethnicity.
The reception greeting the series that despite its title deals with beef mostly metaphorically (stemming from a road rage incident leading to an elongated feud that makes the protagonists feel alive) has been deservedly exalted, bolstered by major word of mouth.
