Passionflix, a romance-focused streaming service run by Elon Musk’s sister Tosca Musk, has raised 9.4 million in a funding round led by AMC Networks.
The influx of funding was reported Wednesday in an SEC filing, but individual investors were not named.
AMC Networks’ minority stake worth several million dollars was confirmed by a person familiar with the transaction, but AMC Networks did not reveal it in a filing of its own. The company had no comment when contacted by Deadline. Under SEC rules, investments qualifying as “material” must be reported by public companies, so the fact that AMC did not disclose it indicates the modest size of the transaction in the overall scheme of things. Still, AMC Networks has made investments before in entities like Rlj Entertainment and the streaming outlet Acorn and went on to acquire full control of them over time.

The romance-focused streaming video service Passionflix — founded by filmmaker Tosca Musk — has raised 9.4 million in a new financing round led by AMC Networks.
Musk, who is also the younger sister of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and daughter of model Maye Musk, tells The Hollywood Reporter that she plans to use the fresh cash to ramp up original programming for Passionflix, and to grow the company, which still has only 6 employees. “[It’s] pretty tiny, so everybody wears a lot of hats, including myself,” she says.
“Movies cost money to make, and the way that a lot of streaming platforms work, and certainly Passionflix, is that every time we release an original, our numbers spike. So it was really for growth capture,” Musk says of the raise, adding that by the end of the year the service hopes to have completed filming on four new feature...

A small round of layoffs has hit Topic Studios this week in the television division, insiders familiar with the company told Variety.
One of the insiders said three executives at the New York-based producer and distributor are out: senior vice president of scripted programming and Viacom alum Lisa Leingang, vice president of development Mona Panchal and scripted programming director Kate Zabinsky.
A spokesperson for Topic Studios declined to comment on personnel, but said the scripted television division is in the process of relocating to Los Angeles. Topic operates as an arm of Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media, and has been making cost-cutting moves since HBO vet Maria Zuckerman replaced Adam Pincus as executive vice president in May.
In late June, First Look shuttered the studio’s digital publication Topic Magazine, dedicated to nonfiction storytelling, and cut off funding to the political cartoon website the Nib. In mid-July, New York...

While her brother is making a killing on flamethrowers, Tosca Musk's latest business venture arrives with a decidedly softer touch: a female-focused streaming platform called Passionflix.
Musk, a noted director whose Holiday Engagement is one of the most-watched TV movies in Hallmark channel history, launched the service late last year alongside producer Jina Panebianco and writer Joany Kane. Passionflix squarely targets the romance novel crowd with a library of licensed features and in-house productions. Content is organized according to categories like ‘Tissues And Ice Cream’ for those in need of a good cry, or ‘Hutzpah And Hoohah’ for something a bit more action-packed. Furthermore, a 'Barometer Of Naughtiness' (Bon) indicates each title’s sex appeal on a scale from one to five.

Web 2.0 startups are now well versed in the the so-called 'freemium' model of doing business. Give a basic level of your service away for free and then charge users for premium services. Everything from project management tools (Basecamp), collaborative learning (Grockit), online radio (Pandora) and business networking (LinkedIn) all have made this the core models of their businesses. As we first noticed last year, the freemium model is now making its way into the online video business. Today comes news of two different sides of the web video platform spectrum—premium content site Hulu and live streaming site Ustream—hinting that they too are heading towards this model. The slower adoption of freemium in online video is in many ways linked to a decades old reliance on ad supported entertainment business, particularly in television. But recent moves are sending signals the industry may be on the heels of a turning...

Every great adventure has a few select moments that its participants remember a little clearer than the rest. The transformational moments that shifted the journey along a slightly different path. For Jeff Macpherson, creator of the widely popular and long-running web series Tiki Bar TV, one such moment was an email that landed in his inbox one morning in the first week of October, 2005. It came from Apple. What followed was a somewhat cryptic phone call that essentially boiled down to this: "We can't tell you why, but you might want to make sure you have plenty of bandwidth for your web site next week." That following Wednesday Apple CEO Steve Jobs would introduce the video iPods in one of his famed keynote speeches, boasting about the introduction of video podcasts to iTunes. Luckily MacPherson was savvy enough grab an unlimited bandwidth plan from his hosting company, prepping for the...
