In the clip, Coscarelli explains hearing “Last in Line” for the first time and bringing Dio an original idea centered around a simple notion: “teenagers in hell.” Coscarelli credited Dio with giving the premise some added depth: “He basically told me, ‘From birth to death, we’re all in a line,...

Frankie Banali, who played drums on Quiet Riot’s best-selling albums and kept the band going for nearly four decades, died Thursday at the age of 68. He had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer last April. The band’s agent, Mark Hyman, confirmed the news to Rolling Stone.
Banali joined Quiet Riot in 1982, one year before the band released its blockbuster breakthrough album, Metal Health. The singles “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Metal Health (Bang Your Head)” featured Banali’s hard-hitting drumming, and the group’s mixture of...

Black Sabbath is reuniting, but one member won't be joining the gang on tour. The group's original drummer, Bill Ward, says he won't tagging along for upcoming concerts.
In a statement on his website, Ward cites the lack of "a signable contract" and a pretty rude move on the part of other bandmembers in his decision not to join the reunion:
"Earlier in April 2012, I'd been asked to participate 'minimally' in the Download festival. I believe I'd been offered no more than three songs to play while another drummer presumably played the rest of the show with Black Sabbath. I was not willing to participate in that offer. I was not prepared to watch another drummer play a Sabbath set, while I was to play only three songs."
According to Ward, the band suggested he come play a show for free and see if things worked out well. The drummer wasn't biting,...

Ronnie James Dio's widow is urging the surviving members of his band Heaven & Hell to continue working together - under a different name. Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in May, and his bandmates, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice, subsequently re-grouped for a tribute show in London in July.
The concert was billed as Heaven & Hell's final performance, but Wendy Dio hopes the rockers will continue to work together as long as they pick a different band name. She tells VH1 Radio, "I don't know what they're doing right now. I know that Geezer's been asked several times, and he's just... he took it (Dio's death) very hard. I don't really know what they're doing right now."
"They should do something else, with Vinny, too. I mean, the band was amazing, an amazing band and they should carry on to do something. It won't be called...

Drummers including former Guns N' Roses star Steven Adler and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith have signed up to take part in a tribute to late Led Zeppelin percussionist John Bonham to mark the 30th anniversary of his death.
Bonham, nicknamed Bonzo, died in 1980 at the age of 32, effectively ending Led Zeppelin's music career - the group disbanded three months after he passed away. He will be remembered at a tribute concert in Los Angeles on September 25 - exactly 30 years after the tragedy - and stars including Adler and Smith, as well as Bonham's son Jason Bonham, will take to the stage to play drums on some of Led Zeppelin's most famous tracks.
The show, titled "Bonzo: The Groove Remains the Same", will take place at the Key Club in Hollywood and will also include performances from former Black Sabbath star Vinny Appice and Scorpions' James Kottak,...

It was something of a whirlwind day for metal fans on Sunday (May 16). They woke up to the news that Ronnie James Dio, the guy who fronted Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own self-titled metal band, had died. But it turned out that he hadn't yet passed on, and though he was very ill (Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer a few months ago), he was still fighting. But by the time the evening rolled around, the truth had come out: The metal legend passed away at the age of 67.
Dio's place in metal is iron-clad, though he was always perpetually underrated. He had the thankless job of being Ozzy Osbourne's replacement in Black Sabbath, and though the second era of Sabbath never churned out any tunes as iconic as "Iron Man" or "War Pigs" (or even Osbourne's concurrent solo material), Dio did add to the Sabbath legacy...

Bob Dylan just left Miley Cyrus blowing in the proverbial wind. The grizzled folk-rock icon landed his second-straight No. 1 album, selling 125,000 copies of Together Through Life, per Nielsen SoundScan, rendering the Cyrus-fueled Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack a distant second. The Disneyfied release moved 86,000, while last week's chart champ, Rick Ross' Deeper Than Rap, fell to No. 4.
