A Latina of Puerto Rican and Guatemalan decent, Mildred graduated from the University of California Berkeley. She then won an MFA Oscar De LaRenta Scholarship to attend the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. At Arena Stage Theatre, she was urged to hone her skills by mentor and resident Costume Designer Paul Tazewell. Mildred soon became part of the crew of the first Latino sketch comedy show called House of Buggin, Fox/ HBO television program.
As an assistant costume designer, Mildred worked with the ensemble troop, including John Leguizamo and Luiz Guzman, in creating characters. Her achievements include positive press as Costume Designer for film festival winning low budget independent features. Mildred worked with Oscar winning Directors and Producers such as college friend Regina King for One Night In Miami, and Producer Jonathan Sanders trusted her talents as Assistant Costume Designer on Marshall starring Chadwick Boseman. She has collaborated with the innovative fashion editor - the late Isabela Blow for Tatler UK. But, her love of depicting historically accurate characters is the benchmark to her success. She Costume Designed plays at Berkeley Repertoire - The Oresteia, and The Maids. She recently designed the film Silent Life - the story of silent film star Rudolph Valentino. Her ability to communicate fluently in both Spanish and English helps her translate culturally identifiable Latino/a characters as well as to work on international projects in Latin America and Puerto Rico. Being inspired to create story and character that leaves a positive impact on Latina American Filmmakers and writers, she continues to persevere.
As a writer, Mildred's ideas received accolades as her UC Berkeley Senior Thesis became a chapter published in Berkeley's theatre text books. In 2014, Mildred covered stories at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a journalist and member of the President Obama's White House Press. In 2016, her articles on Latin American filmmakers and Latinos in Film and Television here in the US were published in various major news outlets. She continues to pursue writing original stories inspired by her true life events and collaborating with producers to develop characters in Costume Design and Costume Supervising.
