Across the sprawling city of Los Angeles — within feet of children’s bedrooms, playgrounds, office buildings, and places of worship — there’s an oil well, exuding toxins that put nearby residents at risk of asthma attacks, reproductive issues, and multiple types of cancer. The evidence stacked against Big Oil is alarming, and after more than 130 years since drilling began in the town of flowers and sunshine, the Los Angeles city council unanimously voted to phase out drilling in January 2021.
In response, oil and gas companies collected enough signatures for a referendum to challenge the legislation.

“When Jane Fonda calls, you show up,” explained John Legend, tickling the ivories in front of a large crowd of glittery art lovers, environmentalists and celebs. “Wouldn’t you?”
The large artist, art collector and celeb crowd mingling in the white chandelier-strewn tent behind Gagosian Gallery made it pretty clear they not only would, but did. Fonda, along with gallerist Larry Gagosian and Christie’s, organized the evening, titled “Art For a Safe and Healthy California” — an art sale to support California’s grassroots fight against Big Oil, in an attempt to protect neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling. With so many years of activism and fundraising dedicated to feminist, pacifist and environmental issues — organizing, fundraising, holding benefits, walkouts, protests, not to mention getting arrested four times — Jane Fonda is now going up against Big Oil.
Nothing the lifelong rights fighter can’t handle, of course.
“What’s more important than the destruction of our planet?...

The center is named in honor of Lou Ruvo, father of foundation founder Larry Ruvo, who died from Alzheimer’s disease.

Exclusive: Meta, parent company of Facebook, is closing its Frank Gehry-designed London base, Deadline has learned. It will further reduce the number of offices it occupies in London, where the tech giant has its largest staff presence outside of the U.S.
The news Meta is shuttering its sizable HQ at One Rathbone Square, in the city’s upmarket Fitzrovia district, comes shortly after it paid £149 million ($189 million) to break a long-term lease on another office, close to London’s Regent’s Park.
Meta moved into Rathbone Square in 2017. It has housed marketing and sales teams as well as engineers and developers. It has also been the location for a dedicated incubator space for start-ups.
After the Rathbone Square exit, Meta’s UK presence will be concentrated on two existing locations, in Brock Street, close to Euston, and nearby Kings Cross.
Meta told staffers about the change in December.

Wolfgang Puck’s now-iconic Chinois on Main, which pioneered what came to be known as Asian fusion or Pacific Rim cuisine, has turned 40 this year. An entertainment industry haven since the day it opened in Santa Monica at the address of a former New Wave punk club, it’s since gone from radical to old guard. The restaurant’s starry clientele has ranged from Tom Selleck and Mike Ovitz to Gwyneth Paltrow and Frank Gehry (who is now designing Puck’s planned replacement of the oceanfront Gladstone’s restaurant along Pch).

Back in 1983, Angelenos first got a streetside sneak peek of Chinois in the months before its arrival, when the chef was buying a dozen ducks at a time from Chinatown wholesalers and blowing them up with a compressor at a gas station a few blocks down from Spago, the Sunset Strip restaurant that had earned him renegade...

In the last few months, chef and philanthropist José Andrés’ nonprofit rapid-response group World Central Kitchen has continued its mission of delivering fresh meals to people in crisis zones all over the world, including in Acapulco, Mexico, following Hurricane Otis making landfall there on Oct. 25.
“The World Central Kitchen teams have been in Maui after the wildfires, the earthquakes in Morocco and now Afghanistan, aiding refugees in Armenia, and we continue to provide meals in hard-to-reach parts of Ukraine,” Andrés tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that, “In each of these times of hardship, destruction and disaster what you also find is that the best of humanity shows up. I see this simple truth time and time again. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you believe, where you come from, in these moments of grief and great loss there is at the same time profound strength.”

Editor’s note: This report has been updated with more information from Los Angeles County officials.
After a half-century, the landmark Gladstone’s restaurant in Pacific Palisades apparently is ending its run.
The oceanside restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway is expected to close in October, a source told Deadline. The State of California owns the land and leases it long-term to Los Angeles County, which has entered into contractual agreements with Pch Beach Associates LLC. That group was selected in 2018 after a request for proposal went out. That deal calls for the construction of a Frank Gehry-designed, Wolfgang Puck-operated restaurant on the current Gladstones site, the County rep said. That vote was not unanimous, however.
Update: As the Pacific Palisades location dies, another rises to take its place. A new Gladstone’s will take possession of the Edgewater Grill space in downtown San Diego’s Seaport Village early...

Richard Riordan, the two-term Los Angeles mayor who helped rebuild the city in the wake of the Rodney King riots in 1992 and the devastating Northridge earthquake two years later, has died. He was 92.
Riordan died Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, his daughter Patricia Riordan Torrey announced.
A venture capitalist and moderate Republican, Riordan served as mayor from 1993 — succeeding the retiring Tom Bradley and winning his first election ever — until 2001, when term limits ended his run. He defeated legislator Tom Hayden, former husband of Jane Fonda, to be re-elected.
Riordan also was mayor during the 1994-95 O.J. Simpson criminal murder trial that riveted L.A. and the world.
“Mayor Richard Riordan loved Los Angeles and devoted so much of himself to bettering our city,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “He always had a place in his heart for the children of L.A. and worked to improve how...

After 25 years hosting such regulars as Harrison Ford, Rob Reiner, Ted Danson, Diane Keaton and Frank Gehry, the much-loved Italian eatery Vincenti Ristorante shuttered Oct. 15.
Opened in 1997 by Maureen Vincenti (whose late husband owned the famed Rex Il Ristorante, featured in Pretty Woman) and chef Nicola Mastronardi, its Brentwood building was purchased by L.A. mayoral candidate Rick Caruso’s group years ago. They continued to thrive until the lease ran out and new terms were presented.
“We couldn’t pay the rent which was triple what it had been,” Maureen explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “Costs escalated so much.”
She says the landlords “were good to us” by offering an interim deal that allowed them to remain without a renewal until a new tenant was found, at which point they would get a 90-day notice to vacate. That notice arrived in the summer,...

“That was sick,” exclaimed a twenty-something guest as the Los Angeles Philharmonic concluded its stirring gala opening night performance celebrating the 90th birthday of composer John Williams on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The LA Phil, conducted by music & artistic director Gustavo Dudamel, had just surprised attendees by playing Williams’ famed Star Wars :Main Theme” song as an encore. It capped a night that also included selections from his memorable scores for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List (played by acclaimed violinist and guest artist Anne-Sophie Mutter), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, plus “Princess Leia’s Theme.”

Even as daily Covid case numbers fall in Los Angeles, there has been a rash of infections at one of the city’s glitziest addresses: 321 Hampton Drive in Venice. That’s the location of Google’s Silicon Beach campus.
The compound was, of course, famous even before the search giant set up shop there about a decade ago. Designed by Frank Gehry, the so-called “Binoculars Building” is most notable for the giant sculpture by artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen out front.
Today, however, the location is notable because, according to reporting from Los Angeles County Public Health, it is the locus of one of the biggest workplace outbreaks in the region. L.A. County Covid Outbreaks page indicates that there have been 145 infections at the 321 Hampton Drive address. It also lists another 15 at the adjacent 320 Hampton Drive address, also identified as Google. That makes for a total of 159 infections.

Brad Pitt‘s Make It Right Foundation has struck a 20.5 million settlement with owners of post-Hurricane Katrina homes the actor’s foundation initially built and sold to affected families below cost but ultimately drew attention for the homes’ poor conditions after the families moved in.
The settlement calls for Global Green, an environmental non-profit organization that was not part of the 2018 class action lawsuit, to foot the bill on behalf of Pitt’s foundation. The preliminary settlement agreement – which still requires the court to sign off on – will aim to resolve outstanding issues in the litigation over homes Make It Right developed in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. Global Green will fund a program to rectify defects in the homes and resolve the litigation.
“I am incredibly grateful for Global Green’s willingness to step up and provide this important support for the Lower Ninth families,” Pitt said.

One of Los Angeles’ — and the world’s — most captivating pieces of architecture, Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall is seen by most downtown L.A. visitors from street level.
Now, the 93-year-old architect’s new The Grand LA complex — a 1 billion, 15-years-in-the-making, two-tower mix of retail, a hotel and luxury residences located just across the street — offers a different, fresh perspective on the iconic home of the L.A. Philharmonic. Many of the project’s hotel rooms and rental apartments look directly out at or peer down on the concert hall and its sweeping swooshes of stainless steel. It’s a view that the architect himself cherishes — so much so that he’s taken a unit in The Grand by Gehry residential tower on a lower floor, one that provides an intimate, up-close view of one of his most loved buildings.

This review of “Official Competition was published on Sept. 4, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
To trot out the old adage, “scratch a cynic, find an idealist” in reference to “Official Competition,” a modest showbiz sendup that premiered, fittingly enough, in official competition at 2021’s Venice film festival might be putting it a bit too harshly. Frankly, it wouldn’t take more than the morning breeze or the soft touch of an infant to wipe away the thin layer of satire that (barely) covers a deeper, almost evangelical belief in the power of movie stars.
In some ways you could call it a throwback in the sense that it runs totally counter to the high-concept, IP-driven model of recent Hollywood output. “Official Competition” co-directors Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn would rather offer viewers a no-concept, light and breezy big-screen hangout, betting that audiences will turn out...

“We’re never really quite satisfied with anything we do,” says Elizabeth Diller, founding partner of the ultramodern architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. It’s not quite a humblebrag, more a lingering anxiety about her most famous creation: New York’s High Line.

"I think there will be a day when we wish we still had many of his structures still standing." A teaser trailer is available for an intriguing documentary film titled Goff, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Britni Harris. It's not often we see films about architects, which already makes this unique. Bruce Goff was an American architect from the Midwest known as an Organic architect, best known for his eccentric designs that flew in the face of conventional architecture. His design philosophy came from the abstract term called, “continuous present,” coined by Gertrude Stein, which he described as living the past and present in one continuous stream. Goff thought that was the ideal of architecture, architecture that had no conventional beginning, middle or end but continued. Though well regarded in his time by Frank Lloyd Wright and cited as an influence by both Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson, Goff...

A fundraiser for Joe Biden organized by Haim Saban raised $4.5 million on Monday, marking the media mogul’s first event for the 2020 presidential race.
Saban and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) cohosted the event, with 22 people in the crowd, according to a pool report. Tickets were priced at $500,000 per person (meaning not everyone was a donor), and the other guests included Cheryl Saban, Tim Disney, Frank Gehry and Susan Disney Lord.
Saban, a longtime donor and bundler for Democrats, did not endorse during the primary, unlike 2016, when he was an early backer of Hillary Clinton.
He introduced Biden for the virtual event, and after a bit of a glitch in which Biden could not be heard, the former vice president echoed comments he made earlier in the day about California’s devastating wildfires and the connection to climate change.

Warner Bros execs joined California Governor Gavin Newsom Tuesday, for the official groundbreaking of the studio’s new Frank Gehry-designed “iceblock” office towers.
Leading the event was Warner Bros Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff, who welcomed 200 guests to the ceremony, including Gehry and Burbank Mayor Sharon Springer, as the studio embarks on an expansion of its Burbank-based movie and TV studios.
“These incredible new buildings will combine state-of-the-art technology with a dynamic work environment and allow us to re-imagine not only our workspace but our future,” said Sarnoff. “This is an investment in our employees, our creative and business partners, and the Burbank community.”
Newsom noted that the construction project will create jobs and pump money into the state economy.
“This is a project that shows confidence in our future. This is a big deal, not just for Burbank or the region, but for the entire state,” he said.

During a Los Angeles County hearing earlier this week, the 55-year-old actor, who was there advocating for increased funding to support improvements for the L.A. County Museum of Art, had to be cut off by Board of Supervisors Chairman Janice Hahn.

“We actors suffer from verbosity,” a smiling Pitt quipped after sharing that he knew he had exceeded his time limit.

Or the time he walked into the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards in a relationship with Christina Applegate and walked out a scorned man, dumped mid-show. The question that Hermann Vaske has asked for over two decades is a large one. Why Are We Creative? There’s no blanket answer — no right or wrong notion of the philosophical ramifications trying to put your own personal interpretation into words conjures. So it’s interesting that he would end his film with a statement explaining how the thousand-plus subjects he asked changed the way he looks at the world. It’s interesting because we don’t know if that is true. After traveling the world to confront geniuses in their respective fields and creating an art exhibit with pages upon pages of written and drawn summaries of definitions spoken, Vaske hasn’t created any concrete evidence towards the worthiness of the endeavor to himself besides that single line of dialogue.
One therefore has to look past what it is he believes the film has always been. We have...

Serge Toubiana, president of uniFrance, shared with me during the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema reception at the Film Society of Lincoln Center some background on the 25 exhibitions he organised when he was the director of the Cinémathèque Française. They included Tim Burton, Pedro Almodóvar, Dennis Hopper, Stanley Kubrick, François Truffaut, Jacques Demy, and the terrific opening installation in the new Cinémathèque building designed by Frank Gehry on Auguste Renoir and Jean Renoir - Renoir: Father and Son / Painting and Cinema.

Make some space on your vanity: Jennifer Aniston has launched a new fragrance.
Luxe, her fifth scent, is a departure from her previous ones, which boasted a beach-ier feeling, the actress tells PeopleStyle exclusively.
“The others were all a little bit more of a California beach girl vibe, I wanted to go in a more sensual direction, because I hadn’t really done that before,” says Aniston, who adds that she craved a concoction with “a little more depth, base and weight to it.”

Brad Pitt is getting in touch with his artistic side — but not on camera.
In the months following his split from Angelina Jolie, the actor has been spending time working on a new sculpture at the Los Angeles art studio of friend and artist Thomas Houseago.
“He recently spent many days and even nights working on a sculpture,” a source close to Pitt tells People in this week’s issue. “People close to him are happy that he has found something new to be passionate about.”
Houseago is a well-known British contemporary visual artist who creates sculptures with materials such as plaster and plywood.

"I'm not about death, I didn't want to die, but I wanted to come close." Magnolia has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Burden, telling the story of artist Chris Burden, who made his place in art history in 1971 with dangerous performances. The film features Burden himself, as well as Jonathan Gold, Marina Abramovic, Frank Gehry, Alexis Smith, and Brian Sewell. The description says the doc examines "the artist’s works and private life with an innovative mix of still-potent videos of his 70s performances, personal videos and audio recordings, friends fellow students and colleagues, critics’ comments and latter day footage at his Topanga Canyon studio, all peppered with his thoughts and musings through the years." This definitely looks fascinating, and I'm intrigued to learn more about Burden and his motivations for this. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Richard Dewey & Tomothy Marrinan's doc Burden, from YouTube: Chris Burdern...
