- Racing for the BMW Williams F1 Team, he finished the 2003 Formula One season third overall in the drivers championship, behind Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) and Kimi Raikkonen (McLaren Mercedes). He won two races that year, the Monaco Grand Prix and the German Grand Prix.

His team finished second overall in the constructors championship.
- Planning to join the NASCAR series in 2007, Montoya left Formula One ten races into the 2006 season, with Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa replacing him at the McLaren Mercedes team for the remaining eight races. During his Formula One career, Juan Pablo Montoya started 94 Grands Prix, 7 Wins, 13 Pole Positions, 12 Fastests Laps, 30 Podiums and 307 Points. His best overall result in the drivers championship was finishing third in 2002 and 2003, on both occasions in a BMW Williams car.
- In 2007, he'll drive for Chip Ganassi's NASCAR Team, replacing Casey Mears on the #42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge. He drove for Chip Ganassi during 1999 and 2000 on the CART Championship.

- During 2007, he won the Ray Bestos Rookie Award for the Nascar Nextel Cup after finishing 20th in the general standings. He became the first Latin American driver and second non American-driver (after Canadian Earl Ross in 1974) to win a race in Nascar's top category.
- Along with team mates Scott Pruett, Dario Franchitti and Memo Rojas, won for the second time in a row the Rolex 24 at Daytona driving the #01 Ganassi/Telmex Lexus Riley. With this win, team Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates became the first team to capture a Rolex 24 at Daytona overall victory in three consecutive years.
- In 2009 he became the first non American driver to enter the Chase for the Cup in Nascar's top category (the Sprint Cup). He finished the season in 8th position.
- Montoya was the 1999 Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) champion.
