Sony Pictures Virtual Reality is gearing up to launch “Ghostbusters VR Academy,” which will let fans of the 38-year-old movie franchise train to become Ghostbusters themselves.
The VR experience, described as an “immersive training simulator,” is being developed by Hologate, an operator of location-based virtual reality entertainment, in association with Ghost Corps. “Ghostbusters VR Academy” is slated to be available globally for at Hologate’s 400 locations by the end of 2022.
“Ghostbusters VR Academy” is broken up into two distinct games: One in which players battle supernatural foes together using the famous proton packs, and a second in which Ghostbusters trainees will pilot the flying Ecto prototype vehicle.

A new interactive experience based on the Men in Black films is the latest offering to be added by LA-based virtual reality firm Dreamscape.
The company, whose CEO and co-founder is producer and former studio exec Walter Parkes, said Men in Black: First Assignment will debut October 1 at its flagship location at Westfield Century City. Participants in the experience will take on the role of alien-fighting agents.
Parkes is an executive producer of the Men in Black films. The first three installments pulled in more than $2 billion at the global box office, but Men in Black: International in 2019 did not match the earlier films, grossing $254 million worldwide.
“Almost 25 years after the men in black first saved the planet from destruction, it’s incredibly exciting to welcome a new class of elite government agents to continue the story at Dreamscape,” Parkes said in the announcement of the attraction. “This experience fully...

“Groundhog Day” is getting a sequel, but it’s not a movie — it’s a virtual reality game being developed by Tequila Works in partnership with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality.
“Groundhog Day: Like Father, Like Son,” drops players into a reoccurring day in the life of Phil Connors Jr., the son of the eventually affable Phil Connors and Rita Hanson from the 1993 film. As with the movie, the game has the player stuck in a single day, trapped in Connors’ home in Punxsutawney until the son, like the father did before him, learns the value of friends and family.
The game is Sony Pictures Virtual Reality’s first foray into branching narratives and interactive storytelling in a VR game. What it isn’t is some sort of preamble or marketing ploy for a film sequel.

Some of film, television, music and tech’s biggest influencers gathered Thursday for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Variety‘s 2018 State of the Entertainment Industry Conference.
Producer Vin Di Bona; executives Kristin Cavanaugh of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Christina Derenthal of Paramount Pictures; chamber of commerce chair Donelle Dadigan; and Los Angeles city officials Mitch O’Farrell and Kevin James kicked off the program with opening remarks. They were followed by James Corden. The CBS late-night host introduced music-industry executives Lucian Grainge and Irving Azoff, who spoke with Corden about the business as well as their longstanding friendship.
“Irving doesn’t like one-sided deals,” Grainge said, when talking about the number of times that he and Azoff have negotiated.
“I regularly try to tell people that this isn’t the sports business where somebody has to lose and somebody has to win,” Azoff added.

“Ghostbusters is so big you can kind of go all over the place.” That’s what the wonderfully named Jake Zim, Svp of Vr for Sony Pictures Entertainment, told io9 on their recent visit to try out a new Ghostbusters Vr experience. Out now on PlayStation this is the latest movie property given over to the video game market, and you can see why it fits the medium well. Who wouldn’t want more Ghostbusters in their life?
“I think Ghostbusters is this wonderful [intellectual property] because it has so many storytelling opportunities,” Ghostbusters godfather Ivan Reitman told the publication, “And it’s a particularly good one for Vr.” Reitman also elaborated on the future of the series beyond Paul Fieg’s 2016 reboot. Rumours were flying before production that multiple films were on the cards. All-female teams, all-male teams, global ghostbustering and so on. It seemed that a shared universe was always the plan.

If the first week of July - when Pokémon Go blew through the zeitgeist - was augmented reality’s coming-out party, is this current week or two the same for virtual reality?
On Thursday, October 13, Sony’s Vr headset debuted in stores, just days after both Google and Facebook held big events spotlighting their takes on the hardware needed to view virtual experiences.
Also on Thursday, the Vr Society opened its big two-day On the Lot conference at Paramount Pictures, featuring traditional Hollywood creators – such as directors Bryan Singer and James Foley, musician Will.I.Am, and comedian David Spade (who is a Sony favorite) – alongside top Vr execs from giants such as Google, Sony, Intel and Amd. Pretty much all of them were optimistically calling on creators to make more, more, more (and better) virtual content to attract more, more, more audiences and kickstart this new creative platform.

Clint Kisker and OddLot Entertainment owner Gigi Pritzker co-founded their immersive media group Reality One in 2015.
They recently co-produced and co-published Gnomes And Goblins, an original production in partnership with Wevr that enables users to explore a magical Vr world created by Jon Favreau.
Sony Pictures will handle worldwide distribution on the slate and expects to start later this year.
“Sony is a company born of technological innovation and Spe born of storytelling,” said Sony Pictures motion picture group chairman Tom Rothman.

It's been said that dying is easy, comedy is hard. But for the directors of XBox Live's first original series, both carry equal weight and appear to be a breeze. Having slaughtered innocents in films such as Slither , Saw , 30 Days of Night and Hatchet , directors James Wan, James Gunn, David Slade, Andrew Douglas, Peter Cornwell, Adam Green and Lucky McKee stepped outside of their genre comfort zone for a series of comedy shorts which began running on XBox Live on November 26th. This endeavor is produced by Peter Safran and Jake Zim of Safran Digital Group and creator James Gunn; the U.S. Air Force hopped on board as a sponsor. And although one could argue that many of these directors imbued some of their past fright flicks with a doses of black humor, this latest...

Peter Safran, founder of management and production firm the Safran Co., is set to launch Monday a digital media company that has a distribution deal with Microsoft's Xbox Live platform already in place.
Safran Digital Group's first slate of content will be available to Xbox users in the summer. The offerings will be available on the Microsoft product for an exclusive window, which will be negotiated on a project-by-project basis, before going out through other partners.
"We want to make sure that we have the right distribution channels in place," said Safran, CEO of the new company. "We had a very specific idea that we knew worked for a core audience. Xbox clearly has this exact same demographic."
The company plans to launch six shortform shows in comedy, horror and sci-fi genres. The content will be monetized via a combination of electronic sell-through and advertising.
Safran and company COO Jake Zim declined to provide specifics on the content, saying only that the talent was "significant" and speaks to Xbox's young-male demographic.
